E. The battery capacity is dimensioned in such a way that the LF-ULD is able to send this acous-
tic signal for the duration of at least 90 days.

NOTE: Refer to FIGURE 1001 for the Test Diagram Setup.

TEST DIAGRAM SETUP

FIGURE 1001
C. Testing with the Novega Ulyser

(1) The Ulyser (PN: 20538-00) is a battery-powered receiver for ultrasonic signals with a
frequency of 5 to 50 kHz.
(2) The Ulyser (PN: 20538-00) receives ultrasonic signals via an integrated microphone.
(3) The received signals are optically reflected by a blinking symbol and acoustically via an
integrated loudspeaker.

(4) For further instructions and the complete testing procedure please follow the instruc-
tions of the Ulyser (PN: 20538-00) manual.

NOTE: The Ulyser (PN: 20538-00) manual will be send together with the

TASK 25-60-00-700-805-A00
5. TESTING WITH ALTERNATIVE TEST EQUIPMENT
A. For battery voltage measurement, use a Multimeter. Please consider, that therefore the LF-
ULD has to be set into service operation mode (refer to Service Operation Mode).

NOTE: Instructions for use of a Multimeter are not specified further in this manual.
B. For operational testing we recommend the use of the Novega Ulyser, however, an alternative
Ultrasonic Test Set can be used. Please consider, that therefore the LF-ULD has to be set into
service operation mode (refer to Service Operation Mode).

NOTE: The use of the alternative Ultrasonic Test Set is not specified further in this
manual. The alternative Ultrasonic Test Set must be able to receive and dis-
play an acoustic signal with a strength of approx. 65 dB in air, a pulse length
of min. 10 ms, repetition rate of min. 0,1 pulses/s and a frequency of 8.8
kHz ± 1kHz.
C. Service Operation Mode

Please ensure that both water switch pins are clean and dry before starting the test (following
Operational and Battery Testing with Ulyser).

NOTE: The LF-ULD contains an intelligent activation, which avoids an unintentional

activation, whereby the durability of the battery could be impaired. On this
account, observe the following procedure to set the LF-ULD into the service
operation mode. Connect both of the water switch pins for approx. 3 sec-
onds with the wire jumper, this sets the LF-ULD into the service operation
mode. The LF-ULD is in the service operation mode for 60 seconds now. At
this point, the battery voltage is circulating to the water switch pins and the
LF-ULD is pulsing the acoustic signal. After expiration of 60 seconds, the
LF-ULD drops back into the sleep mode.

R 25-60-00 PAGE 1003

Jun 19/2020
COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
SID88

NOTE: The LF-ULD pulses the acoustic signal a maximum of 6 times within the 60
seconds in the operation mode, due to the pulse repetition rate of 0,1 pul-
ses/s.
NOTE: If the 60 seconds in service operation mode are not sufficient to carry out
both tests (Acoustic Signal and Battery Voltage), the LF-ULD can be put
back into the service operation mode to complete the inspection. We rec-
ommend a waiting time of at least 30 seconds between the end of the first
service operation mode and the restart.

SERVICE OPERATION MODE

FIGURE 1003
D. Battery Voltage Measurement

(1) Adjust the Multimeter into a range of 20 VDC and a resistance of 10 MOhm. During the
60 seconds, press both of the multimeter test prods on the LF-ULD water switch pins
and read off the battery voltage.
(2) The indication of the Multimeter might oscillate in the decimal range.
(3) This is normal and shows, that the LF-ULD is pulsing the acoustic signal, which causes
a minor fall of voltage.
(4) The minimum read-out voltage value must not fall below 3.2 V.
(5) If minimum value is undercut, the beacon / battery must be replaced.

E. Acoustic Test

(1) Perform the acoustic test with the alternative Ultrasonic Test Set, please ensure that
the LF-ULD is in the service operation mode (refer to Service Operation Mode).
(2) For the use of the alternative Ultrasonic Test Set please follow the instructions of the
respective test manuals of the specific manufacturer how to set the test set in the re-
ceiving state.
(3) If battery voltage is in order but no signal is received, please read the fault isolation in-
structions (refer to Fault Isolation) or contact our service department (refer to Manufac-
turing).

INSTALLATION
TASK 25-60-00-99F-814-A00
1. GENERAL
A. This section describes the methodical installation and mounting of the Low-Frequency Under-
water Locating Device.
B. Installation Criteria

A recommendation for the installation of the LF-ULD can be found in the ARINC SPECIFICA-
TION 677.

NOTE: The LF-ULD is intended to be mounted to the structure of the aircraft and
provide a locating signal in the event an airplane becomes submerged un-
derwater. Placing the LF-ULD inside a containment vessel will prevent it
from performing its intended function of transmitting low frequency ultrason-
ic pulses to aid the location of the mishap aircraft.
C. Site Selection Guidance

NOTE: The following considerations should be taken into account as a guidance,

but under no circumstances can replace a type certification on aircraft level
or constitute an installation advice.
D. The LF-ULD should be installed in such a way that removal and installation can be performed
without removal of aircraft parts or components (e.g. galley, toilet, floor panel, etc.), other than
service panels.
E. The LF-ULD installation should not hinder the removal/installation or servicing of other equip-
ment.
F. Installation of the LF-ULD should provide enough space to:

(1) Perform required maintenance activities, e.g. check of LF-ULD battery or functional test
of the LF-ULD without removal of the LF-ULD from its bracket.
(2) Permit the qualified technician to work with both hands while observing the work area.
G. The LF-ULD label should be readable without the use of special tooling or removal of the LF-
ULD from the aircraft.
H. The LF-ULD is intended to be mounted on the aircraft structure and should neither be installed
in wing sections nor in the empennage of the airplane.
I. When choosing an LF-ULD mounting location, the entire set of environmental conditions must
be considered. Particular aircraft type related tests, such as Sustained Engine Imbalance, may
be required and validated for installation.
J. According to ETSO tests for fire safety requirements, the unit must contain the fragments/
debris from explosion but not gases/vapors/smoke.
K. Under normal use, battery fire is not anticipated, however, do not select a site next to any gas/
vapor/smoke sensitive device or to explosive substances such as fluids, materials and their
pipes.
L. The selection of the mounting location and the orientation should ensure that the LF-ULD is not
likely to activate due to fluids accumulation during normal use.

R 25-60-00 PAGE 13001

Jun 19/2020
COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
SID88

M. Any compartment that may be expected to flood easily during normal use should not be selec-
ted.
N. Direct contact between the LF-ULD's water sensitive switches and water may activate the
acoustic signal output.
O. The installation area of the LF-ULD must be free of sound absorbent materials (honeycomb
structures, tarpaulins and persennings, clothes, cargo, etc.) to avoid the possibility that LF-ULD
transmissions are attenuated significantly. Do not wrap round the LF-ULD with tape or insula-
tion blankets.
P. In case of an incident, the possibility of demolition of the unit by crash is to be minimized.
Q. The environment, selected for mounting the LF-ULD, has to exclude the possibility that the LF-
ULD can be struck by moving, heavy weight components.
R. The LF-ULD must not be disassembled, crushed, penetrated, incinerated or exposed to tem-
peratures above +85°C (+185°F).

TASK 25-60-00-410-801-A00
2. PROCEDURES
A. General

(1) Before installing the LF-ULD, please consider that the LF-ULD can be properly tested
once it is installed.
– Before installing the LF-ULD, ensure that the contact surfaces between LF-
ULD and mounting bracket are flat, coated, without sharp-edged areas, free of
impurities and rust.
– Inspect the LF-ULD for transportation damages.
– Additional unapproved stamps or labels on the LF-ULD may reduce the acous-
tic radiation.

NOTE: In case of doubt, or if the LF-ULD should show damages, please

contact our service department (refer to Manufacturing).
B. Mounting

(1) To mount the beacon, perform the following steps:

– Prevent distortion of the LF-ULD while mounting on the mounting bracket.
– Secure the LF-ULD with four washers and aircraft standard screws with the di-
ameter and thread pitch that conforms to National Aerospace Standard
NAS1802-4-xx or equivalent (0.25 inch diameter, 28 tpi screw).
– Clean the water switch pins (refer to Cleaning) and perform a functional test of
the LF-ULD (refer to Operational and Battery Testing with Ulyser or Testing
with alternative Test Equipment).

R 25-60-00 PAGE 13002

COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
SID88

NOTE: The "xx" indicates the length of the screws (0.0625 inch incre-
ments) which shall be determined by the equipment installer de-
pending on LF-ULD flange thickness (refer to FIGURE 3) and air-
craft structure. The screws must be fastened with the screw-specific
tightening torque.
NOTE: The LF-ULD is no electrostatically sensitive item with no require-
ment for bonding. Aircraft relevant requirements may be different. A
recommendation can be found in ARINC SPECIFICATION 677 for
LF-ULD § 3.7 Electrical Bonding.

MOUNTING EXAMPLE
FIGURE 13001
C. Venting Point

The vent point is required to release overpressure in case of a battery failure (not anticipated
under normal use). For more information please contact our service department (refer to Manu-
facturing).

NOTE: The position of the venting point may be in any place within the shown vent-
ing area.
