2. SYSTEM DESIGN
Overview
A grid connected solar system, essentially containing the following key elements:
Solar PV panels to generate electricity
Grid tied inverters that converts the DC power generated from the panels and feeds
the loads in the premises
Exception
The system is NOT a backup power system and therefore does not have any batteries for
storage of power. Hence, power generated during the day is fed directly to the connected
loads in conjunction with the existing conventional power sources - grid power.
TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY
If PLN approves the application provided in Phase 1, TA will visit the Morich 1 and 2 sites to
study the electrical system and site conditions and accordingly proceed further.
Technical Advisor (TA) will review the site information including site plans and boundaries. In
order to gather essential data for the technical feasibility, a site visit will be carried out. During
the site visit TA shall analyse the structural feasibility/strengthening and features of the roof
to assess the suitability of installation of solar PV plants, including:
Space Availability of the Roof-top
Slope of the roof
Features of roof
Near and far shading
Horizon shading
Potential for air pollutants (e.g. nearby factories or dust producing processes).
Roof conditions, Dust and dirt accumulation (module soiling).
Grid Connections and Power Evacuation.
Constraints for development of solar PV plant.
Current and previous roof use.
The site visit shall validate the roof boundaries and provide assessment inputs to the energy
yield estimation and quality information for subsequent technical requirements.
The site visit shall be carried out by TA along with a member of the Client and should take
place at an early stage in the technical feasibility studies.
INVERTER SELECTION
Based on the initial constraints of the site and the layout characteristics, for energy yield
analysis, TA will advise on the inverters selection from a list of industry leading inverter
manufacturers with products suitable for a project of this size.
ELECTRICAL CABLING
For the energy yields, a review of the requirements for DC and AC cabling will be made with
an electrical cable design and schedule prescribed by potential solar contractor. This shall
provide the approximate quantity of cabling required and initial cable routes from the
modules through to the substation.
An assessment of the allowable electrical losses will be made based on engineering best
practice for a project of this size.
POWER EVACUATION
The TA will work with the client on deciding the requirements for the interconnection to the
grid and the power evacuation scheme. The TA will specify general requirements based on
standard practice for such PV plants.
BASIC ENGINEERING
The key electrical systems will be reviewed. This will include equipment required for
protection, earthing and interconnection to the grid. The following designs and specifications
will be considered:
Overall single line diagrams
Protection systems
Interconnection systems and design
The civil engineering items provided by structural contractor will include reviewing support
structure foundations, buildings, roads and infrastructure required for implementation and
operation. The design criteria and wind loadings will be reviewed.
The key operations and maintenance tasks will be assessed ensuring the design has provision
for suitable maintenance activities to take place. The availability of suitable resources (for
example water, manpower, and engineering) will be outlined. The outline budget cost review
of providing operation and maintenance will be determined using operational experience
from similar plants and scaled to the costs in India.
4. SYSTEM DETAILS
