MODULE OVERVIEW

Agriculture is one of the primary contributors to the Philippine’s (GDP) gross domestic
product. It is a source of income and subsistence among many Filipinos. In agriculture,
competition is high on the quality and number of food production. There are several factors
to be considered in dealing with vegetable production these are following: planting
operations, seedling management, transplanting, fertilizer management, insect pest
identification and management, mechanical and physical control and plant disease
identification and management.

In our country, the government faces several cases of problems that involve unemployment,
health issues. In order to ease these problems, vegetable production is one of the best
factors needed to solve these problems. This provides a promising economic opportunity for
reducing rural poverty and unemployment in developing areas and is a key component of
farm diversification strategies. Vegetables are mankind's most affordable source of vitamins
and minerals needed for good health.

Moreover, in order to provide good quality production of vegetables, we should consider the
site selection of farm wherein the soil type is suitable for planting vegetable, also the
availability of water irrigation and selection of variety of seedlings that can produce huge
production and also resistance to diseases. Good vegetable production depends on the
superiority of the seeds. Seed selection is very important step in cultivation, quality of seeds
should always be good so that we may get better production of vegetable and this is one of
the most effective ways to improve farmer’s yield. In terms of transferring the seedlings
from seedbed, there are also factors to consider in transplanting such as the number of leaf
of a sprout, the weather conditions and the quality of the sprouts. Fertilization is a central
component of farming that impacts both vegetable productivity and the quality of the
environment. The goal is to ensure that there are sufficient levels of nutrients based on crop
requirements, peak harvest times, and the soil’s natural ability to provide nutrients. Since
proper fertilization means achieving a dynamic balance, any imbalance can lead to economic
losses and the contamination of groundwater and surface water. The risks are even greater
when the soil’s health is affected, since degraded soil requires more fertilizer to compensate
for its lower fertility. Identifying the type of insect pest characteristics is a huge factor in
dealing with insect pest control management. The extensive use of pesticides and the risks
they pose to human health and the environment are now the focus of national concern and
interest. Environmental problems to be addressed as a consequence of pesticide use are: (a)
pollution of ground and surface water: (b) increased resistance of pest populations to
pesticides; and (c) impact on non-target organisms; i.e. reduction of beneficial insects, soil
micro and macro organisms; biomagnifications, and pesticide residue transmittal within the
food web. Furthermore, a symptom of plant disease is a visible effect of disease on the
plant. Symptoms may include a detectable change in color, shape or function of the plant as
it responds to the pathogen. Overcoming these problems is having a great impact in
economy.

In this module, we will learn about different techniques and it will enhance our knowledge
related to vegetable production. It tackles and discusses the importance of production in our
economy and improving the old fashion method into modernization method with the aid of
technology.

MODULE OBJECTIVE

After this module, the participants will be able to discuss a package of technology on
vegetable production and establish community-based vegetable production areas that will
provide nutritional and economic benefits as well as improve the quality of life.
