1. OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this method statement is to describe the activities and methods,
which will be used to carry out resurfacing work and construction of pavement for
additional Road lane

2.1 Resurfacing Road
2.1.1 Site Preparation
• Traffic management to be implemented as approved by client and
contractor to prevent interreference of public vehicles
• Scrape off existing premix road wearing course to approximate 25mm thick
by method of milling
• Dispose the milling material from site to contractors dump site
• Prepare surface and clean the milled surfaces to satisfaction of the S.O, to
receive tack and wearing course
2.1.2 Bituminous Tack Coat

• General Conditions
• Tack coat shall be applied in accordance with specification and the lines,
dimensions and cross-section shown on the drawings. This works shall
consist of careful and thorough cleaning of the surface and the finishing
and application of bituminous tack coat prior to the construction of an
overlaying bituminous pavement layers i.e. Dense Bitumen Macadam,
Asphaltic Concrete Binder and Wearing Course.

• When it is necessary to prepare a surface for the application of a tack coat


and to undertake the spraying. The work shall also be undertaken in
accordance with the under mentioned general requirements and any
specific requirements of the Engineer.

• Surface Preparation and Cleaning


• Before spraying is commencing, the surface shall be freed of all grit, dirt
and loose material and, in the case of concrete transition slabs, laitance.
The surface as a whole shall be dry and any damp areas shall be
completely free of standing water.

• Application of Tack Coat


• The rate of spread of the tack coat shall depend on the nature of the
surface to be treated. For bituminous surfaces the rate shall be 0.15 to
0.30 litres/m2 and for concrete surfaces it shall be 0.4 to 0.6 litres/m2.

• The surface of structures, road furniture and trees adjacent to the areas
being sprayed shall be protected in such manner as to prevent their being
spattered or marred by bituminous material.

2.1.3 Laying of Flexible Pavement

• Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) or Porous Mix (grade 14)


• Prior to laying of SMA, a trial lay on each material would be carried out to
determine the rolling pattern required to achieve the compaction
specified.

• For manual control, levels during laying will controlled by foreman.

• SMA mixed shall be transported from mixing plant to site by tipper lorries.
The mixed shall be fully covered with tarpaulin canvas during transport
and waiting time to maintain material temperature.

• Asphalt paver shall then place SMA to the thickness as specified which is
25mm each layer.

• After laying of SMA, immediately the tandem and tyre rollers will be used
to compact the SMA or with minimum temperature not less than 120°C.
Compaction shall be started at lower side to the higher side of
carriageway.

• The number of passes for each roller together with the pattern of rolling
shall be as determined by the trial lay and approved by the Engineer.

• 24 hours after laying, coring shall be done at the specified rate to


determine the degree of compaction and thickness.

2.2 Pavement for Additional Road Lane


2.2.1 Site Preparation
• Remove trees and dispose removed trees to dump’s site
• Demolish and existing road kerbs, including the whole length of scupper
pipes affected
• Disposed the removed materials to contractors dump site
• Traffic management to be implemented as approved by client and
contractor
• Excavate for road formation levels get out, part return and compact
• Dispose surplus excavated earth to contractors dump site
• Grade formation to reduce levels to form subgrade to receive road
bottoming and side table, fill and remove excavated earth from site
including trimming and rolling subgrade to require cambers and gradients
• Spread, trim and compact 100mm thick sand as subbase to receive crusher
run roadbase, compaction required as SO’s requirement.
• Supply, spread, trim and compact in 2 layers if graded crusher run
roadbase to a total compacted thickness of 300mm as SO’s requirement

2.2.2 Bituminous Prime Coat


• General Conditions
• Bitumen prime coat shall only be carried out in dry, warm weather when
the surface to be treated is essentially dry.

• Material
• When required by the Engineer, the Contractor shall provide for the
binder distributor to be used, test certificate issued by an appropriate and
established Testing Authority to show that the distributor has been
recently tested and found to comply with the requirements for hot binder
distributors.

• Surface Preparation and Cleaning


• Prior to apply the prime coat, the crushed aggregate road-base shall have
been shaped and compacted, any damage to or deterioration of the road
base shall be made good before prime coat is apply.
• Immediately prior to apply prime coat, the full of the surface to treated
shall be swept using a power broom followed by a compressed air blower
and if necessary, scrapped using hand tools to remove all dirt, dust and
other objectionable materials.

• Application of Prime Coat


• The bituminous material shall be sprayed on to the clean road-base
surface by means of a pressure distributor.

• Any areas inaccessible to the distributor spray bar shall be treated using
hand distributor spraying system.

• The rates of application shall be in the range 0.5 to 1.0 litre/m2

• The surface of structures, road furniture and trees adjacent to the areas
being sprayed shall be protected in such manner as to prevent their being
spattered or marred by bituminous material.

2.2.3 Laying of 1st layer of Flexible Pavement

• Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) or Porous Mix (grade 20)


• Prior to laying of SMA, a trial lay on each material would be carried out to
determine the rolling pattern required to achieve the compaction
specified.

• For manual control, levels during laying will controlled by foreman.

• SMA mixed shall be transported from mixing plant to site by tipper lorries.
The mixed shall be fully covered with tarpaulin canvas during transport
and waiting time to maintain material temperature.

• Asphalt paver shall then place SMA to the thickness as specified which is
65 mm each layer.

• After laying of SMA, immediately the tandem and tyre rollers will be used
to compact the SMA or with minimum temperature not less than 120°C.
Compaction shall be started at lower side to the higher side of
carriageway.
• The number of passes for each roller together with the pattern of rolling
shall be as determined by the trial lay and approved by the Engineer.

• 24 hours after laying, coring shall be done at the specified rate to


determine the degree of compaction and thickness.

• The Surfaces of SMA shall be cleaned from debris and dirt by used of air
compressor and power broom prior laying of bituminous tack coat.

All cold joint shall be heated to allow proper fusion with the new material.

2.2.4 Bituminous Tack Coat

• General Conditions
• Tack coat shall be applied in accordance with specification and the lines,
dimensions and cross-section shown on the drawings. This works shall
consist of careful and thorough cleaning of the surface and the finishing
and application of bituminous tack coat prior to the construction of an
overlaying bituminous pavement layers i.e. Dense Bitumen Macadam,
Asphaltic Concrete Binder and Wearing Course.

• When it is necessary to prepare a surface for the application of a tack coat


and to undertake the spraying. The work shall also be undertaken in
accordance with the under mentioned general requirements and any
specific requirements of the Engineer.

• Material
• The Engineer may require the Contractor to provide a certificate stating
that a binder distributor has been tested within the previous six months
and that the test indicated conformity of the distributor with the
requirements for emulsion distributors.

• Surface Preparation and Cleaning


• Before spraying is commencing, the surface shall be freed of all grit, dirt
and loose material and, in the case of concrete transition slabs, laitance.
The surface as a whole shall be dry and any damp areas shall be
completely free of standing water.

• Application of Tack Coat


• The rate of spread of the tack coat shall depend on the nature of the
surface to be treated. For bituminous surfaces the rate shall be 0.15 to
0.30 litres/m2 and for concrete surfaces it shall be 0.4 to 0.6 litres/m2.

2.2.5 Laying of 2nd layer of Flexible Pavement

• The number of passes for each roller together with the pattern of rolling
shall be as determined by the trial lay and approved by the Engineer.

• 24 hours after laying, coring shall be done at the specified rate to


determine the degree of compaction and thickness.

2.2.6 Opening to Traffic


• ACWC shall not be opened to traffic until compaction has been completed
and the materials has thoroughly cooled and set in the opinion of the
Engineer’s representative. This is usually not less than 4 hours from
the initial of rolling.

• Coring shall be carried out to determine the compaction, 24 hours after


laying.

2.2.7 Permanent Road Marking and Flexible Road Delineator

• To supply all materials and apply reflective thermoplastic marking (white)


for broken and edge lines as per drawing.
• Supply and install road delineator as and when required.

2.3 Road Kerb


2.3.1 Method of statement of casting of in Situ Kerb
• Upon approval of marked areas, the alignment and finished level of in situ
concrete road kerb shall be set accurately on site for approval by the
Engineer
• The depression areas along alignment must will be regulated by crusher
run and compacted
• Upon approval of the alignment and finished level, the process of the site
mix concrete and aggregate will take place. The concrete will be poured
into 1 st kerbmaker concrete hopper.
• The surface of the mold must be clean from dirt, loose concrete, oil etc to
ensure optimum output products.
• The cement grout will be poured into 2 nd concrete hopper. The thin layer
of cement grout will flow at outer surface of roadkerb. The purposed of
cement grout to ensure the end product look better finishing and
texture.
• The kerbmaker will run at recommended speed along the approved set up
alignment and finished level.
• Due to weather, the road kerb will be exposed to contraction and
expansion. The groove 10mm square at 3m c/c will be provided along
road kerb.
• The wet concrete kerb will not expose directly to the rain. The plastic sheet
will be provided to cover road kerb and to ensure the curing time will not
disturb app 1 hour.
2.4 Interlocking Pavers
2.4.1 Preparation
• Before interlock work starts, the existing clay pavers need to be excavated
and removed to designated site
• Make sure that sub-grade is compacted when the area is above natural
ground.
• The sub-base shall be compacted with vibratory roller; size of roller shall be
suitable for the area where it could maneuver and can move back and
forth.
• Once compacted and met the specification requirement for compaction
and approved by Engineer, base course shall then be placed above
compacted sub-base but make sure thickness of the bases are as per
approved drawing.
• MEP rough-in or underground embedment (wherever applicable) shall be
in place before interlock work commences.
• In the areas where there are kerb stone, the blinding shall be constructed
first serve as the base but make sure it shall be as per drawing.
• The importance of pre-installation of kerb stone is to prevent the migration
or dis-alignment of interlock or block, and it will serve as reference
line or level.
• After compaction of base-course, the black sand shall be laid on it of 50
mm thick. There are cases that the bedding is mixed with cement to
adhere cohesiveness, but it will be as per specification requirements
2.4.2 Installation of Interlock or Paving block
• The minimum thickness of interlock shall be 80mm with various colors.
Approved interlock or paving block shall be used in the installation.
• The dimension, thickness and design shall be as per approve shop drawing.
• Land surveying shall be made to mark the required levels, alignments,
setting out lines for interlock as per approved drawing.
• Once the whole area is completed, fine sand can then laid on the installed
interlock or paving block. Sand shall be spread evenly on the whole
area.
• Plate compactor shall be used to compact the installed interlock or paving
blocks.
• Once compacted, cleaning shall be followed to remove all excess sand and
damaged pieces.
• Inspection request will then be submitted to the Engineer for approval
2.5 Road Marking
2.5.1 Method and Procedure
• Center line will be set out and get approvals about the center line before
commencement of line marking.
• Road surface shall be cleaned manually using wire brush and wash the
surface where necessary.
• As per the approved road marking design the road marking lines & symbols
will be set out by means of white chalk and approved by Engineer.
• The thermoplastic material is heated in the range of temperature around
170 ~ 200 C and maintain in the range during the entire laying
process.
• After getting the approval of the temporary marking on the asphalt surface
permanent marking shall be carried out by considering required color.
This machine has the facility of adding glass beads in to the paint
while painting.
• All roads marking shall be protected from traffic until the marked paint get
dry.

4 SAFETY
4.1 The contractor will be responsible for all the necessary safety measures at all
time. All works related will be executed in accordance with the Client’s and
Contractor Health and Safety Plan.

4.2 The work will only proceed when a Permit to Work (PTW) has been obtained or
when required. The PTW will be kept on the site for consultation during the
erection works.
4.3 Safety precaution will be taken complying with the Traffic & Safety Plan. Every
precaution will be taken to avoid any accidents & damages to adjoining
properties, workers, and road users.
