Directions: In the following questions, the Assertions (A) and Reason(s) (R) have been put forward. Read both the
statements carefully and choose the correct alternative from the following:

(A) Both the Assertion and the Reason are correct and the Reason is the correct explanation of the Assertion.

(B) The Assertion and the Reason are correct but the Reason is not the correct explanation of the Assertion.

(C) Assertion is true but the Reason is false.

(D) Assertion is false but the Reason is true

14. Assertion (A) : Generally, ionisation enthalpy increases from left to right in a period.
Reason (R) : When successive electrons are added to the orbitals in the same principal quantum level, the
shielding effect of the inner core of the electrons does not increase very much to compensate for the increased
attraction of the electron to the nucleus. 1

15.Assertion : Molecular nitrogen is less reactive than molecular oxygen

Reason : Bond length in nitrogen molecules is more than the bond length in oxygen.

16.Assertion (A): Electron enters 4P orbitals and then it will enter in the 5s orbitals
Reason (R): Energy value of an orbital depends only on azimuthal quantum number.
17.Assertion : The diagonal relationship is observed between the elements present in 3rd period and 4th period..
Reason : Diagonally related elements have almost the same atomic radii and electronegativity value.
18. Assertion : Sigma bond is less stronger than pi bond.
Reason : Sigma bond by axial overlap of atomic orbitals and pi bond is formed by the sidewise overlap of
atomic orbitals.

Section D

The electron configuration of an atom is the representation of the arrangement of electrons distributed among
the orbital shells and subshells. The valence electrons, electrons in the outermost shell, are the determining
factor for the unique chemistry of the element. The basic law governing modern periodic table states that the
properties of elements are periodic functions of their atomic number. These properties reappear at regular
intervals or follow a particular trend at regular intervals. This phenomenon is known as the periodicity of
elements. The periodic properties of elements occur due to the recurrence of similar electronic configuration that
is having the same number of electrons in the outermost orbit. In a particular group, the number of valence
electrons remains the same. On the other hand, the number of valence electrons increases, as we move from left
to right across a period. The chemical property of an element depends on the number of electrons in the valence
shell.
