Homework Assignment 2
Question 1
The left hand end of a thin metal rod, of length L, is maintained at a constant temperature
T0 , while the other end has a fixed temperature, T1 . The right hand half of the rod,
L / 2 x L , is exposed to radiative heating whereas, in the range, 0 x L / 2 is
insulated to this heating. However, along its entire length the rod is exposed to heat
transfer by convection from/to the surroundings, which is at a constant ambient
temperature T .
The governing equation is:
2T c p T
h T T in 0 x L / 2
x 2
k t
2T c p T
h T T T4 T 4 in L / 2 x L ,
x 2
k t
where: T T x,t is the temperature, = 2.7 10 9 K 3 m 2 is a heat transfer parameter
expressing the relative importance of radiation to conduction. Boundary conditions and
other data are: at x=0: T T0 300K , at x=L=10m: T1 400K . The ambient
temperature and heat convection parameter, respectively, are: T 200K , h 0.05m 2 .
In addition, the density of the metal is: 7870kg / m 3 , the specific heat is:
c p 447 J / kg K and the heat conduction constant is: k 80.2W / m K . The initial
x
condition is: T x,0 T0 T1 T0 .
L
What are the two extra matching conditions required at x L / 2 in order to solve this
problem?
You are required to solve this problem using finite differences and present results
showing the development of the temperature in the rod, until a steady state is attained.
Note: Make sure you submit a report of your work in accordance with the
instructions that appear on the course’s site.
