WRITTEN REPORT IN PE 3
(INDIVIDUAL AND DUAL SPORTS)
Physical activities are proven to have a huge impact to physical fitness and health.
The only problem is — people are not fond of putting effort when it comes to
achieving wellness. This is why some people live a sedentary lifestyle. On the other
hand, there are also people who are active in improving their well-being and so they
engage in sports. As a college student we have set goals and according to Jonathan
Howard, “ your goals differ from those of your classmates ” , but every goal shares
one common attribute which is to improve individual wellbeing.

One notable sport that is played globally is Badminton. Badminton is played as a

singles or doubles game with one or two players on a side. The object of the game is
to hit the shuttlecock or “ bird ” back and forth with a racket across a net five feet
high at its center. The bird should be hit with such speed and accuracy that the
opponent is
unable to return the shot successfully. The game can either be fast or slow paced,
depending on the skill level of the players.

HISTORY

Badminton is a racket sport and was invented about 2000 years ago. However, it has a
long history as badminton originated from the ancient game “Battledore and
Shuttlecock”, where two or more players hit the ball with the help of a racket and try
to keep it in the air.

The governing body of this sport, Badminton World Federation (BWF), was formed
on 5 July 1934 and held Scotland, England, Wales, Denmark, Canada, France, Ireland,
and the Netherlands as its founding members. Currently, it has 176 member nations.
This sport first appeared in the Olympics Games in 1972 as a demonstrating sport.
Later in 1988, it seemed as an exhibition sport in the Olympics. In late 1992 it was
declared a medal sport, where the competitions where singles and doubles
competitions were held. Mixed doubles were later introduced four years later in 1966
games.

Badminton racket

A racket plays a vital role in this sport as these rackets help to hit the shuttlecock over
the net from one court to other. These rackets are made of carbon fiber, graphite,
aluminum, and wood.

These rackets are also classified into different categories like head light, head heavy,
and even balanced. But let me inform you that an ideal badminton racket weighs
between 71-90 grams and should be 11 3/8 inches long.

Rather than this, a racket is classified into five parts: stringed area, head, shaft, throat,
and handle. The head of the racket is also known as the frame, which measures about
680 mm long and 230 mm wide.

Shuttlecock

Shuttlecocks are even known as a birdie that is made up of goose left wing feathers,
nylon, or plastic. These shuttlecocks are high-drag projectiles with a conical shape
and are open from the top. An ideal shuttlecock weighs around 4.75-5.50 grams.

Badminton players generally use two types of shuttlecocks: feathered and plastic
shuttlecocks. Feathered shuttlecocks are used for international and professional level
tournaments, whereas plastic shuttlecocks are usually used for practicing and playing
domestic matches.

Net

A net is placed in the middle of the court, dividing it into two equal parts. A net
creates the objective of hitting the shuttle and landing it in the opponent’s court to win
a point without touching it.

Badminton nets are made up of nylon mesh, polyester, and plastic. The width of a net
is 20 feet, and the height of the posts is 5 feet 1 inch long from the ground.

On the other hand, the net height in the center measures approximately 5 feet, and the
overall size of a net is 2 feet 6 inches.

Badminton attire

To play badminton, you must require shorts, skirts, synthetic sports t-shirts, socks, and
a pair of non-marking shoes.

Badminton is the fastest sport, where a player has to perform fast and quick moves,
making the player sweat a lot. So, I suggest you wear breathable and soft fabric shorts
and a t-shirt.

Rather than this, proper badminton attire boosts the player’s confidence and helps the
audience identify the team or the player.

BASIC SKILLS

A. Grip
1. Forehand – with the racket head perpendicular to the floor, shake
hands with the grip so the “V” formed by the thumb and forefinger is
on the top of the handle.

2. Backhand – using a forehand grip, rotate the hand slightly so the

thumb is along and parallel to the wide side of the handle.

B. Footwork
1. Move toward the shot with short steps and end with a long stride.
2. In the ready position the racket is held high, the knees are slightly bent,
and the body weight is on the balls of the feet.

C. Strokes
By using the same motion for all shots, the opponent is unable to detect what shot you
are going to make until the bird is actually hit. A good wrist action allows more power
and control with much less effort. A forehand stroke is one from the dominant side;
the backhand stroke is from the non-dominant side. The racket is swung back, the arm
is bent with the elbow up, the wrist is cocked, and the body weight is placed on the
back foot. From this position, the stroke is made by throwing the hand at the point of
contact between bird and racket with weight being transferred to the forward foot. If
possible, shots should be made with an overhand stroke.

1. Clear – a shot used to drive your opponent away from the net or
forecourt or to slow the game. The bird should fly above the
opponent’s reach and fall within one foot of the baseline.
2. Smash – an attacking shot made at the limit of one’s upward reach
and slightly in front of the shoulder. At the moment of contact, the
arm and wrist come down forcibly.
3. Drive – A flat shot kept as low as possible and is second only to the
smash as an attacking shot.
4. Drop Shot – any shot that drops immediately after crossing the net.
The descent of the bird is controlled with little follow-through.
5. Net Shot – any shot played as near to the net as possible, controlled by
wrist and forearm. The hairpin shot is an example of a net shot.
D. Serves

1. High and deep (singles) – take a position near and on the proper side
of the center line and about four feet behind the short service line.
Drop the bird on the racket side and swing the racket forward.
2. Low and short (doubles) – take a position closer to the front service
line. The racket is swung forward with little follow-through.
3. Drive (flick) – a quick snap of the wrist in the backhand grip with the
bird held directly in front of the body. The bird travels in a direct line
at the receiver.

E. Flight Patterns (left to right)

TECHNIQUES & STRATEGIES

Playing Strategy
A. Singles – serve long most of the time. Return a high serve with a drop or clear.
Build the game plan on a basis of alternate drop and clear shots, and then use
the smash/drive as openings occur. Run your opponent from the front to back
and from side to side of the court.
B. Doubles – make shots, the return of which will leave an opening for your
partner to play a winning shot. Never play a shot that leaves your partner open
to smashes. Always make an attacking shot. This implies that all shots should
be hit down. Most serves should be short and low. Attack short serves when
receiving.
1. Side-by side – each partner is responsible for half of the playing court,
net to baseline.
2. Up-and-back – one member plays the front portion of the court,
operating from the centerline and just behind the short service line.
The partner plays the rear portion of the court from the centerline and
just in front of the double rear service line.
3. Up/back rotation – combines the two doubles’ strategies, using the
side-by-side position for defense, and up and back formation for attack.

GENERAL RULES/REGULATIONS/SCORING

BWF (Badminton World Federation) has set some rules and regulations, that every
player has to follow on the court:

 A badminton match begins with a serve.

 A player cannot serve or start the game unless his opponent gets ready.
 While performing a serve, the player’s feet should not go beyond the
boundary lines.

 A player is not allowed to muddle his opponent by any means during the
match.
 In case a player misses the shuttlecock, then he cannot retry it or else it will be
counted as a fault.
 A player is also not allowed to fling or hold the shuttle on the racket bed for
too long.
 A player cannot hit the shuttlecock over the net or before it enters his court.
 Generally, a badminton match begins with 0-0 points, and when the server
scores a point in even number then he needs to serve from the right side of the
court and when he score in odd, then he needs to serve from the left side of the
court.
 If the receiver wins a rally, he scores a point and becomes the new server.
 A badminton match is played in three sets of 21 points each. To win a
badminton match a team has to win two sets out of these three.
 The side that wins the game becomes the one to serve first in the next game.

Faults
 A player cannot perform a serve from above his waistline.
 Player’s feet must be inside the boundary lines while serving or performing a
shot.
 A player is not allowed to jump or move while performing a service.
 The shuttlecock should not touch the player’s body or clothes.
 A player cannot touch the net during the match.
 A player can also not hit the shuttlecock twice.

Lets
Lets are those calls which are made during or in between the match by the umpire or
the players. Now let me explain you when these calls are made:
 When a shuttlecock gets stuck in the net or falls apart.
 If any player faces injury during the match.
 In case, the umpire is unable to make decision.
 If a server serves before his opponent gets ready.

Scoring

1. Rally scoring allows for a point to be won by either team regardless of which
team is serving.
2. Both singles and doubles games are won with 21 points.
3. The side winning a rally adds a point to their score.
4. At 20 all, the side that gains a 2 point lead first, wins that game.
5. At 29 all, the side scoring the 30th point wins that game.

COLEGIO DE LAS NAVAS
(The First Community College in the Island of Samar)

6. In the third game of singles and doubles, players change sides when a side
scores 11 points.
7. A match is won by winning two out of three games.
OFFICIALS & THEIR DUTIES

The referee is in overall charge of a badminton tournament or championship(s)

of which a match forms part, to uphold the Laws of Badminton and Competition
Regulations in the BWF Statutes.
Individual singles matches require a total of six officials:

 An umpire who is in charge of the match, the court and its immediate
surroundings.
 Four line judges (two for each side of the court positioned at the baseline)
who indicate whether a shuttlecock landed ‘in’ or ‘out’ on the line(s) assigned.
 A service judge

Doubles matches require a total of eight officials. This is as above but an additional
two line judges are sometimes added (one for each side of the court positioned at the
doubles service line).

Badminton is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels.
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player, there is always room for
improvement and new challenges on the court.

Conclusively, playing badminton can be a fun and competitive sport because it can be
played in a competition or it can just be part of an exercise routine. It is also an
engaging way to stay active. Unlike traditional forms of exercise, such as running or
lifting weights, badminton can be a fun and social activity that doesn't feel like
exercise. By playing badminton regularly, you can stay active and improve your
overall health and well-being.
