India, a mighty global economy which will soon be crowned the youngest nation in the world faces
multiple daunting challenges in terms of energy/physical/cyber security, potable water scarcity,
environment and climate change, poverty, affordable health care for billions, etc. A vast majority
of these tasks demand engineering intervention and technological innovation. A clarion call was
made by the Honourable President and Prime Minister to address all engineering and technological
challenges faced by the nation through a nation-wide unique initiative
called IMPacting Research INnovation and Technology (IMPRINT) launched on November 5,
2015 from the Rashtrapati Bhavan. IMPRINT India was a multi-stakeholder mission programme
aimed at bridging the gap between scientific knowledgebase created through fundamental and
applied research and fruitful translation of the same through engineering invention and
technological innovation for the betterment of society.
● Projects to promote innovation of a higher order that directly impacts the needs of the
industries.
● Funding model: 50% MoE + 25% Industry +25% other ministries
Uchhatar Avishkar Yojana (UAY) was announced on October 6, 2015, with a view to promoting
innovation of a higher order that directly impacts the needs of the Industry and thereby

design industry
▪ To spur innovative mindset in the students and faculty in premier technological institutes
▪ To bring a coordinated action between academia and the industry
▪ To strengthen the laboratories and research facilities in the premier technological
institutions.
▪ To have outcome-based research funding.

act as Center of Excellence; will work on National Mission Projects and set up Laboratories,
Incubation Hub, Research cum Academic Hub; and act as a centre for technology development
and transfer.
Research Parks to be set up at following Institutes: IIT Guwahati, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT
Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderbad and IISc
Govt. of India approved a new program titled Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) in
Higher Education aimed at tapping the talent pool of scientists and entrepreneurs, internationally
to encourage their engagement with the institutes of Higher Education in India so as to augment
the country's existing academic resources, accelerate the pace of quality reform, and elevate India's
scientific and technological capacity to global excellence.
In order to garner the best international experience into our systems of education, enable
interaction of students and faculty with the best academic and industry experts from all over the
world and also share their experiences and expertise to motivate people to work on Indian
problems, there is a need for a Scheme of International Summer and Winter Term. During the
'Retreat' of IITs with Minister of Human Resource Development Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani on 29th
June 2014 at Goa, it was decided that "A system of Guest Lectures by internationally and nationally
renowned experts would be evolved along with a comprehensive Faculty Development
Programme not only for new IITs, IIMs, IISERs but also other institutions in the country.
