Alienated

It was the first day of college. Being an international student, I was greeted by an
immense cultural shock presented by the great America. Positively quoted reminders hanged
everywhere around the campus, several types of symbolic flags representing sexual
orientations, and cheerfully themed fluorescent lights punctured my eyes. Feeling anxious, I
strolled towards the office, as I was told by the security guard. The headmasters, who had a pair
of glasses precariously balanced on her nose, looked at me from top to bottom as if I was some
illegitimate child. Then, she gave me a brief information about my class, who my class teacher
is, and a breakdown of the class schedule. From the look of it, she seemed rather incurious
about me so, I restricted myself from elaborating any further.
Following the meeting, I was guided to my classroom by an assistant teacher.
“Hope you have a great time, honey”, she said while smiling --- a smile which I believe was a
sarcastic one.
I knocked on the door; it creak-opened. What awaited in front of me was an unfriendly human
giant that was twice the size of me.
“New guy?”, he exclaimed before plodding back to his seat.
I tried to utter a speech, but I failed miserably; the anxiety was acting on me a little bit too
much. I held tightly onto my backpack with shaking hands, and perspiration dripping down
from my face like a waterfall. Why did I end up here like this; How am I going to survive like this
for another two years; Will everything be okay? were a few of the million questions responsible
of my anxious behaviors.
I sat through my lectures like a statue that everybody failed to notice (thankfully to the
single seat at the back of the class). I was completely isolated. I never missed my home country
this badly before. However, I decided to gather up courage and strike up a conversation with my
nearest seat mate.
“Hey! You must be Samantha…”
She gave me a death stare --- a stare that was intense enough to make my mind crumble into
pieces. Aware of the circumstances, I quietly returned to my seat, losing all hope to
communicate with anyone else. Just then, the giant guy from earlier approached towards me in
a caring manner.
“Everyone, I heard that this new guy is a smarty pants! Better befriend this dude for the sake of
your GPAs! “, he said jokingly in a loud voice.
Suddenly, everyone looked at me differently; It was nothing like before. From the bottom
of my heart, I felt somewhat included in this society. I had absolutely no idea of what
encouraged his actions, but I was extremely grateful for it. I no longer felt like a devil’s spawn
nor a boy with horns.
