Explain Epistemology, Metaphysics and Axiology as three important parts or
scopes of philosophy.
Philosophy is a journey of inquiry, into the whole world in an effort to solve, formulate, and
comprehend fundamental problems of our life concerned with existence, knowledge, values,
reason, mind, and language with the help of rational systematic methods. It is clear that the
domain or scope of this subject is so broad and liberal that it deals with almost every areas of
knowledge human intellect can stretch. It attempts to find the nature of reality itself as a
whole coherent notion by three distinct area of knowledge known as Epistemology,
Metaphysics and Axiology. It is impossible to define philosophy without these areas as it will
make us incapable of explaining different aspects of our life fittingly.
One of the most crucial question Philosophy asks is, “What is knowledge and how can we
attain it?” Which only arises more questions such as “even if we attain knowledge how will
we be sure if its authenticity?” “What are the nature and conditions of valid knowledge?”
“What are the limits of our knowledge?” How can we answer any of these questions? This is
where Epistemology arrives in the frame. This particular strain of philosophy deals with the
critical study of knowledge and works as a support system for further metaphysical
speculations. Even if epistemology cannot provide us with the absolute truth it prepares us to
evaluate things that we perceive and we must not forget that “Knowledge will forever govern
ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with
the power which knowledge gives.” (James Madison)
Uttered by the great Greek philosopher Aristotle “All men by nature desire to know.” only
indicates the nature of curiosity in human beings. Consequently, it plagues them to search the
unknown and provokes their desire to understand the fundamental nature of the world, of the
universe, and of being. This introduces us with the biggest and ancient branch of philosophy-
Metaphysics. The word itself (Meta: beyond; Physics: natural world) reveals its nature. It
attempts to answer questions like “What is ultimately there?" and, "What is it like?”
Metaphysics also explores the existence of God and the nature of human free will.
Metaphysics offers us lucid explanations of these questions and liberates our mind & soul. As
Norwegian author Jostein Gaarder, quoted in his philosophical fiction Sophie's World,
“Where both reason and experience fall short, there occurs a vacuum that can be filled by
faith.”
At this point one might face difficulties deciding what will be the best way of evaluating
different phenomenon of life. Regarding this matter Roy E. Disney, hinted us about another
region of philosophy known as Axiology or the theory of values or ideals. He quoted that,
“It's not hard to make decisions once you know what your values are” Axiology teaches us
ethics & illuminates the nature of beauty, and art which is known as aesthetics.
Ultimately, it is evident that Epistemology, Metaphysics, and Axiology illuminate the world
before us in a new shade of light. The world is not a strange place; it’s just a new one that is
yet to be exposed. Rather than just looking at the world and describing what we see, scopes
of philosophy assists us to evaluate it. It takes nothing as a given, sets assumptions aside,
accepts its flaws and aids an individual to formulate arguments & to support his or her
perplexing queries about this world. Therefore, we cannot reject the enormous contributions
made by the scopes of philosophy.
