Course Handout, Second Semester 2023-2024

Date: January 08, 2024

In addition to Part I (General Handout for all courses appended to the Time Table), this portion gives further
specific details regarding the course.

Course No.: PHY F242

Course Title: Quantum Mechanics 1
Instructor-in-charge: Dr. Ram Shanker Patel

1. Course Description and objectives: An introductory course for Physics Undergraduates, this course will
start with the need for quantum mechanics, establish the basic postulated of Quantum Mechanics leading
to the mathematical structure of Hilbert space, finite-dimensional systems, and leading on to the
continuous variable states, Schrödinger formulation or wave mechanics, statistical interpretation,
normalization, stationary states, the solution to one-dimensional problems, harmonic oscillator,
introduction to spherically symmetric problems and the Hydrogen atom.

2. Books:

1. Text Book (T1) : Introduction to Quantum Mechanics, David Griffiths, 3rd ed, Cambridge University
Press.

2. Ref Book 1 (R1): The Feynman lectures on Physics, Vol 3

3. Ref Book 2 (R2): Modern Quantum Mechanics, J. J. Sakurai

4. Ref Book 3 (R3): Principles of Quantum Mechanics, R Shankar

5. Ref. Book 4 (R4): A Modern Approach to Quantum Mechanics, Townsend

3. Learning Outcomes Upon completing this course, students will be able to:

1. enumerate and elaborate reasons for requiring a quantum mechanical description of nature.

2. work out the probabilities of outputs in quantum experiments.

3. describe the mathematical structure of the quantum state space and use the tools of linear algebra in
quantum problems.

4. apply the statistical interpretation of quantum mechanics.

5. normalize typical wavefunctions.

6. formulate time-independent Schrödinger equation for simple one-dimensional problems.

7. solve for stationary states using techniques of differential equations.

8. use the method of separation of variables in simple 3 d Schrödinger equations with spherical symmetry.
