EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS – LESSON PLAN

Objective – SWBAT find the equivalent fractions of a given fraction.

What –
Equivalent fractions are the fractions that have different numerators and denominators but are
equal to the same value. A fraction is a part of a whole. Equivalent fractions represent the same
portion of the whole.
For example, 2/4 and 3/6 are equivalent fractions, because they both are equal to the 1/2.

To find equivalent fractions, we multiply the numerator and the denominator by the same
number.
How –
 Am I multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same number?
 If the numerator is missing, then see what number is multiplied to the denominator.
 If the denominator is missing, then see what number is multiplied to the numerator.
Why –
Knowing equivalent fractions is going to help me see and compare equal shares/quantities.

Opening – 5 mins
Teacher Actions: Imagine you are going to put a stall to sell lemon juice in our school. In your
groups you are going to discuss how you will prepare lemon juice. You need to clearly mention all
the things used and how much will be used (for one glass). You get 3 mins to discuss. After which
one person from each group will quickly share what they planned.
Student Actions: They will discuss in their groups and share in the class.
INM – 15 mins
Teacher Actions: Using fraction strips, I will introduce them to equivalent fractions. Each student
will be given a handout of these fraction strips. If they prefer to cut out the strips and move one
over the other to learn later also is fine. They can also make their own strips as well. During the
class we are going to just compare and see the strips placed one below the other so that it is easier
to look at all the strips at the same time.

Equivalent fractions are the fractions that have different numerators and denominators but are
equal to the same value. A fraction is a part of a whole. Equivalent fractions represent the same
portion of the whole.
Student Actions: Students will observe and learn about equivalent fractions. They will compare
and see the fractions in their handouts.
GP – 10 mins
Teacher Actions: You will do the worksheet, page number 1. You will get 10 mins do this. If you
need any help, raise silent hands.
Student Actions: Students will do the first page of the worksheet. They will raise silent hands if
they need help.
IP – 10 mins
Teacher Actions: You will do the worksheet, page number 2. You will get 10 mins do this. This time
no helping each other.
Student Actions: Students will do the second page of the worksheet. They will do it individually.
Closing – 5 mins
Teacher Actions: Why do you think we did that lemon juice activity in the beginning?
Because, cooking involves fractions.
Now, can someone quickly summarize what we saw in today’s class.
Student Actions: They will raise hands to respond.
