SEMESTER II 2023/2024

ASSIGNMENT (5%)

A two-lane urban arterial (Class IV) with three intersections at various spacings as shown in
the Worksheet experiences high right-turn volume, served by a permitted phase and an
exclusive turn lane. Given the following information,

Field measured FFS = 50 km/h

Cycle length = 9Z sec
Lane group capacity = 1XYZ veh/hr
Initial queue at Intersection 2 = 1Y vehicles
Arrival Type = 3 (for all segments)
Signal control type = Non-actuated signals
Analysis period = 15 minutes
g/C and v/c ratios = refer to the Worksheet

1. Using the worksheet, determine the level of service for:

(a) segments 1, 2 and 3.
(b) the entire facility.

2. Provide calculation for segment 2 only.

For cycle length: Z shall be the last digit of your Matric Number.
For lane group capacity: XYZ shall be the last three digits of your Matric Number.
For initial queue at Intersection 2: Y shall be the second-last digit of your Matric
Number.

Example:

If your Matric Number is AF190285 then the cycle length to use is 95 sec, the lane
group capacity to use is 1285 veh/hr, and the initial queue at Intersection 2 to use is
18.
