Materials: Student copies, highlighters
This activity is meant as a review once you have taught the phonics skills. I do not
recommend introducing all parts at once. Young learners may also need you to model how
to highlight a word in text (not coloring, just one word, etc.).
Read each sentence aloud and instruct students to listen for words that contain the
targeted sound and highlight them. This is great for phonemic awareness skills as many
children have trouble distinguishing between sounds. Students can also highlight each word
by identifying the spelling pattern in the text. (Ex. Highlight all words that have the /f/ sound
spelled ff). Once everything is highlighted (or as you go), students will sort the words into
the correct categories (again, they may need this process modeled first to ensure
success).
You may want to use one color for each category.
Finally, students can practice reading the sentences for
fluency independently, with a partner, or as a class.
Basic sight words and decodable words were
used in the creation of the sentences to help
build independence. My students love to work on
this during Word Work time and stations. Color
coded answer keys are included and could be
used for a self-correcting center/word work
activity or just to make your job easier. J
