LABORATORY TESTING 5
SIEVE ANALYSIS OF COARSE AGGREGATE

Gospel Devotion:

Proverbs 3:5-6
5
Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
Let’s Pray …

PURPOSE: To determine the particle size distribution and fineness modulus of coarse
aggregate by sieving.

DEFINITION:

●Sieve is an apparatus-round or square in shape-with square openings, identified either

by the size of the opening or by the number (page 4).

●Sieve analysis is the determination of the gradation of aggregates in which a

representative sample of the aggregates is passed through a series of sieves and the
weight retained in each sieves-expressed as a percentage of the sample weight.

●Grading refers to the process that determines the particle-size distribution of a

representative sample of an aggregate.

A normally graded aggregate is that it conforms to the grading limits specified by an

agency or organization.

1
A dense-graded aggregate is an aggregate that that has a particle-size distribution
that results in the least voids or lowest void content.

An open-graded aggregate is an aggregate that has a particle-size distribution that

results in relatively large voids or void content.

A gap-graded aggregate is an aggregate in which in which one or sizes are missing.

●Fineness modulus is the sum of the total percentages of the material in the sample
that is coarser than (cumulative percentages retained) each of the following sieves and
divided by 100: No. 8, No. 4, 3/8 in., ¾ in., ¾ in., 11/2 in, and larger in the ration of 2:1.

EQUIPMENT: Digital balance, sieves, mechanical shaker, oven, scoop, pan

SAMPLE: Dry coarse aggregate of weight equal to the following:

Weight of sample (kg Maximum size of CA (in, mm)

1
15 (37.5) 1
2
10 1 (25)
5 ¾ (19)
_______________________________________________

Use the same weight (as that for ¾ in.) when the maximum size is less than ¾ in.
(19mm).

PROCEDURE:
1. Dry the sample at a temperature of 110o C.
2. Weigh 2 kg of aggregate sample carefully and accurately.
3. Dry the sample at a temperature of 110o C.
4. Weigh each empty sieve and pan.
5. Nest the suitable sieves in order of decreasing size of opening from top to bottom.
Place the pan at the bottom of the set, Sieves: No. 8, No. 4, 3/8 in., ¾ in., ¾ in., 1 1/2
in, and larger in the ratio of 2:1.
6. Place the sample on the top sieve.
7. Place the lid and agitate the sieves in the mechanical shaker for about 10 minutes.
8. Weigh the sieves with the material retained.
9. Determine the weight retained in each sieve. The total weight of the material after
sieving should check closely with the original weight of the sample. If the amount
differs by more than 0.3% based on the original weight, the results should not be
used.

2
10. Calculate the percentage coarser than and the percentage passing (refer to
example below).

REPORT: Report the fineness modulus and average sample size.

Examples:
1. Sieve analysis of a 1000-gram sample of fine aggregate resulted in the following
data. Determine the fineness modulus.

Sieve Size 4 8 16 30 50 100

Weight retained (g) 26 130 240 252 210 138

Solution:
Sieve No. Weight Percent Percent Percent
retained retained coarser finer
4 26 2.6 2.6 97.4
8 130 13 15.6 84.4
16 240 24 39.6 60.4
30 252 25.2 64.8 35.2
50 210 21 85.8 14.2
100 138 13.8 99.6 0.4
Cumulative 308

308
Fineness Modulus = = 3.03
100

Average sieve size = third sieve from the bottom

= No. 30 = 0.0234 in. = 0.60 = 600µmm
The fineness modulus of the sample is 3.08, and counting 3.03 sieves from the
bottommost sieve, the third sieve is No. 30.
