Submerged Arc Cell Configuration

User Manual
1 Introduction

The Submerged Arc Cell Configuration

utility is used for configuring a system of
Power Wave® welding machines for use in
a submerged arc welding environment. In
addition to configuring the Power Wave
machines, this utility generates an .arcs
file which is required to run the Command
Center application, also included with the
Power Wave Utilities installation.

1.1 System Requirements

Minimum hardware requirements:

 256MB system RAM.
 1.0GHz processor speed.
 800×600 display resolution with 256 colors or higher.
 50 MB free disk space.
 Connection to a Lincoln Electric Power Wave or compatible machine through an
Ethernet network or serial (RS-232) cable.

This program runs under the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.1. Therefore, it may be run
within Windows 7 SP1 or later.

1.2 Compatible Equipment

Submerged Arc Cell Configuration may be used with any submerged-arc welding
machine in Lincoln Electric’s Power Wave ® family, which includes:

 Power Wave AC/DC 1000

 Power Wave AC/DC 1000 SD

2 Prerequisites

There are several steps that must be completed prior to running Submerged Arc Cell
Configuration. These include the installation of all cables, and setting up each Power
Wave on the local network.

2.1 Install Cables

All cables must be in place in order to set up the submerged arc cell. The cables
necessary for proper operation are:

 Welding Cables – from the Power Waves to the work.

 Network Cables – from the Power Waves to the network.
 Control Cables – from the Master(s) to the Slave(s).
 Control Cables* – from the System Interface module to the Masters.
 ArcLink Cables* – from the System Interface module to the Master.

*only necessary for Power Wave AC/DC 1000 (non-SD)

2.2 Operational State of the Power Waves

Each Power Wave must be powered on before configuring the submerged arc cell.
However, the Power Waves cannot be welding while the system is being set up.

2.3 Ethernet Setup on each Power Wave

Each Power Wave must be properly set up on the Ethernet network. To set up a Power
Wave on the network, use the Power Wave Manager utility to configure its network
settings.

3 Running Submerged Arc Cell Configuration

The program is designed to require

minimal user interaction for successful
configuration. If the arc cell is physically
wired correctly, this configuration should
take no more than a few mouse clicks.

3.1 Searching for Power

Waves

After the program’s initial welcome

screen, it will automatically search for
Power Waves on your network. This
process may take a few moments.

When all machines have been found, they

will be shown in the “Available welders” list. Note that, in addition to the machines you
plan on configuring, this list may contain machines that are already part of different cells,
and do not need configuring.

The program automatically arranges the discovered machines into cells based on the
detected cable links between the machines. They will be arranged in a tree structure as
follows:

+ Submerged Arc Cell

- System Interface (if applicable)
+ Lead Arc
- Slave (if applicable)
- Trail Arc
… (additional trail arcs)
+ Submerged Arc Cell

+ Submerged Arc Cell

If the control cables between all machines in your cell are connected properly, the tree
layout should reflect the correct arrangement of the machines.

3.2 Manually Adding an IP Address

If one or more of your machines was not detected in the “Available welders” list, you
may click the “Manually add welder” button and type in the IP address of the machine to

add. Once this is done, the tree relationship will be recalculated with the new machine
accounted for.

Note: If the tree does not appear to correctly show the relationship of the machines in
your cell (e.g. incorrect master/slave arrangement, incorrect lead/trail arrangement, etc),
it would indicate a wiring fault between one or more machines, and/or the System
Interface, if one is present.

3.3 Selecting Which Cell to Configure

From the “Available welders” list, select

the machine(s) that will be part of the
submerged arc cell to be configured, and
move each machine to the “Welders in
the new cell” list by clicking the “↓”
button.

Within the “Welders in the new cell” list,

you have the option of rearranging the
order trail arcs (if any) by selecting a trail
arc and clicking the “↑” and “↓” buttons
to the right of the list.

Once this selection is complete, click the

“Next” button.

3.4 System Interface

Selection

The program allows you to select an

external System Interface module to use
with the submerged arc cell.

A System Interface is only required for

systems of two or more Power Wave
AC/DC 1000 (non-SD) machines.

4 Set and Test

The final step of the program is to apply

all necessary settings to the submerged arc
cell, and to perform tests that verify its
integrity.

This page has several checkboxes that

correspond to the different actions that will
be performed. You may uncheck one or
more of the actions if it does not need to
be performed on the current cell.

When ready to begin the tests, click the

“Apply and save settings” button.

4.1 Apply Master / Slave

Settings

This procedure sets up and enables communications between the Master(s) and Slave(s),
as well as synchronizes the real-time clocks inside all machines.

4.2 Test Weld Cables

This test procedure verifies that all weld cables are connected properly between the
Power Waves.

Warning: this test involves turning on the output of the Power Waves. Make sure to take
all necessary electrical safety precautions before proceeding.

4.3 Check Firmware Differences

This procedure checks for differences in the firmware of each of the Power Waves. If
one or more differences is found, it will be listed in the results text box on the left.

4.4 Test I/O Lines

This procedure tests the I/O (Input/Output) connections between the Masters and the
System Interface module, as well as the connections between the Masters and their
Slaves.

4.5 Test Results

When all the test procedures are complete, you will see a report of the actions performed
and their results in the text box to the left of the checkboxes.

If an error occurred during a certain test, it will show up last in this window, with a
description of the error and an error code.

The Test Results window provides the option to save the results shown in the window to
a file. To save the results, click the “Save” button and select a file on disk to which the
messages will be saved for later reference..

If all tests were successful, the program will prompt you to save an .arcs file, which is
the configuration file required by the Command Center application for communicating
with the machines. The arc system is now configured and ready to run.

Click the “Finish” button to exit Submerged Arc Cell Configuration.
