Chemical Kinetics

Definition of terms:

Reaction rate
It is the measure of the change in concentration of the reactants or the change in
concentration of the products per unit time.

1 d[A] 1 d [B]
a dt
= b dt
= k [ A ]a [B ]b

d [CH 3 COOC 2 H 5]
Rate = dt
d [NaOH ]
= - dt
= k[CH3COOC2H5]^1 [NaOH]^1

Reaction order
It is the relationship between the concentrations of species and the rate of a reaction.
a b
k [ A ] [B ]

Rate = d[(CH3CO)2O1 [C2H5OH]^2

Molecularity
A reaction whose overall order is measured can be considered to occur through
several steps or elementary reactions.
Simplified term: It is the number of molecules, atoms, or ions reacting in an
elementary process.

Unimolecular- It is because the single molecule, Br2 decomposes to form two

bromine atoms. In the single-step reaction.

Br2 -> 2Br

Bimolecular - It is because two molecules, one of H2 and one of I2, must come
together to form the product HI.

H2 + I2 -> 2HI

Termolecular - reactions , that is. Processes in which three molecules must come
together simultaneously, are rare.

Complex reactions - Proceed throught more than one step

2NO -> N2O2

Apparent Zero-Order Kinetics
It describe reactions and processes where the rate and half- life are
independent of the reactants’ concentration.
