Example 1-2:

Based on the figures below, design beam 3/A-D. Consider it is condominium structure, width of
column is same as width of the beam, column height = 3.5 m, finishes = 1.5 kN/m2, design life = 50
years, 3-hr of fire rating, concrete grade = C30/37 and fyk = 460MPa.
Reference Calculation
Try slab thickness = 150 mm
Slab s.w. = 0.15 × 24 = 3.6 kN/m2
Total permanent action = 5.1 kN/m2
Variable action = 2.0 kN/m2

Try beam size = 250 mm × 500 mm

s.w. of beam = (hbeam – hslab) bw × concrete density
= (0.5 – 0.15) × 0.25 × 24 = 2.1 kN/m
ULS beam s.w. = 1.35 × 2.1 = 2.8 kN/m
SLS beam s.w. = 2.1 kN/m

Loading on slab:
Ly/Lx = 6.5/3 > 2 1-ways slab

ULS fundamental combination:

EC0: Eq. Max., nmax = 1.35 × 5.1 + 1.5 × 2 = 10 kN/m2
6.10 From slab to beam, wos,ULS,max = 10 × 1.5 = 15 kN/m

Min., nmin = 1.35 × 5.1 = 7 kN/m2

From slab to beam, wos,ULS,min = 7 × 1.5 = 10.5 kN/m

SLS quasi-permanent, nquasi = Gk + 2Qk

EC0: Eq. = 5.1 + 0.3 × 2 = 5.7 kN/m2
6.11b Table From slab to beam, wos,quasi = 5.7 × 1.5 =8.6 kN/m

Reference Calculation
Sketch the deflection profile of the beam:

Stiffness coefficient:
Icolumn = bh3/12 = (250 × 2503)/12 = 3.26 × 108 mm4
3
Ibeam = bh /12 = (250 × 5003)/12 = 26.04 × 108 mm4

Bottom column: kcolumn = 4EI/L

= (4E × 13.26× 108)/3500 = 4E × 3.79 × 105
Beam: kA-B & kC-D = 4EI/L
= (4E × 26.04 × 108)/7000 = 4E × 3.72 × 105
KB-C = 4EI/L
= (4E × 26.04 × 108)/6500 = 4E × 4.01 × 105
