Project # 6

Project Title: Interpret FAA Regulations pertaining to oil tanks

Required Tools: N/A
Required Safety Practices: N/A
Technical Data Utilized: Textbook, Airframe Technician Textbook, Jeppesen, 2016, www.govinfo.gov
Task Completion and Results: Troubleshoot and repair thrust reverser systems and related components
Project Assignment:
a. Locate and interpret FAA regulations pertaining to oil supply tanks
1. Each oil tank installed must withstand all vibration, inertia and fluid loads expected in
operation
2. Each oil tank used with a reciprocating engine has an expansion space that is no less
than 10% of the tank capacity or .5 gallons
3. Each oil filler connection must be marked as specified in 23.1557. Each recessed oil tank
filler connection of an oil tank used with a turbine engine, that can retain any
appreciable quantity of oil, must have provision for fitting a drain
4. Oil tanks must be vented to the engine from the top part of the expansion space so that
the vent connection is not covered by oil under any normal flight condition. The vents
need to be arranged so that condensed water vapor that might freeze and obstruct the
line cannot accumulate at any point
5. For acrobatic category aircraft, there must be means to prevent hazardous loss of oil
during acrobatic flight, including short periods of inverted flight
6. No oil tank outlet may be enclosed by any screen or guard that would reduce the flow
of oil below a safe value at any operating temperature. No oil tank outlet diameter can
be less than the diameter of the oil pump inlet. Every tank used with a turbine engine
must have a way to prevent entrance into the tank itself, or into the tank outlet, of any
thing that might block the flow of oil through the system. There has to be a shutoff valve
at the outlet of each tank used with a turbine engine, unless the external portion of the
system is fireproof.
7. Each oil tank liner must be of an acceptable kind
8. Each filler cap of the oil tank that is used with an engine must provide an oil-tight seal
