HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT

instructor at YMCA International Training School (now known as Springfield College) in
Springfield The game of basketball as it is known today was created by Dr. James Naismith in
December 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts, to condition young athletes during cold months.
Naismith was a physical education, Massachusetts. Upon the request of his boss, Naismith was
tasked to create an indoor sports game to help athletes keep in shape in cold weather. It
consisted of peach baskets and a soccer style ball. He published 13 rules for the new game. He
divided his class of eighteen into two teams of nine players each and set about to teach them
the basics of his new game. The objective of the game was to throw the basketball into the fruit
baskets nailed to the lower railing of the gym balcony. Every time a point was scored, the game
was halted so the janitor could bring out a ladder and retrieve the ball. After a while, the bottoms
of the fruit baskets were removed. The first public basketball game was played in Springfield,
Massachusetts, on March 11, 1892.

Thus, the original game was more akin to modern-day Ultimate Frisbee (where receivers of a
pass must remain in place) than to the high-flying, fast-paced spectacle that is modern
basketball. Additionally, the first game of basketball, played on December 21, 1891, was a nine-
to-a-side slow-paced affair with a final score of 1-0. The sole basket came on William Chase’s
25-foot heave that managed to come to rest in the bottom of the peach basket.

In this game and in early subsequent games, when a basket was scored, a custodian with a
ladder had to remove the ball from the solid-bottomed peach basket. In the following years, an
unaltered peach basket would be replaced with a peach basket Lacking a safe activity to occupy
his young athletes during the long cold Springfield, MA. winter of 1891, YMCA International
Training School physical education teacher James Naismith got creative. He nailed peach
baskets to the lower rung of his gymnasium’s balcony, dug up an ‘association football’ (known
today as a soccer ball), and soon hatched the rules for what would later become a game with
close to a billion devotees: basketball.
However, James Naismith’s creation would look foreign to today’s rabid fans. First, to lower the
risk of injury, players were not allowed to with holes in the bottom (in which the ball would be
popped out with a long rod), an unripped net, a net contraption that opened with a lever (similar
to a modern-day toilet), and finally with empty-bottomed nets. Despite the seemingly alien
differences between Naismith’s invention and contemporary basketball, there were some
striking similarities. As indicated in Naismith’s original 13 rules, “no shouldering, holding,
pushing, tripping, or striking in any way the person of an opponent shall be allowed,” which is
basically the policy regarding fouls in modern basketball. Also, “if there was evident intent to
injure the person during a foul, [the offending player would be removed] for the whole of the
game,” which is comparable to the modern NBA’s Flagrant-2 policy. There was even the 5-
second violation on inbound passes, which served then, as it does now, to quicken the game’s
pace of play.

Soon after the first privately held game at the YMCA, members of the Springfield community
began to come out and watch the regularly-held matches played in the YMCA gymnasium.
Basketball then began to spread like wildfire, jumping from YMCA to YMCA, from town to town,
from college to college and from state to state, where many of the original members of the
YMCA International Training School brought it when returning home on their school breaks. In
1893, less than two years after the sport was invented, Mel Ride-out organized the first match
on foreign soil in France, and in the following decades the U.S. military was instrumental in
spreading the game as it roamed the globe. While the first intercollegiate basketball match
occurred between Hamline University and Minnesota State on February 9, 1895, it is not
officially recognized as such because it still utilized Naismith’s original nine-to- a-side guidelines.
The first college basketball game that did incorporate the modern five-to- a-side limitations took
place between the University of Iowa and the University of Chicago on January 18, 1896, when
Chicago squeaked by Iowa 15-12.

Soon after, in 1898, the first professional basketball league was formed. The National
Basketball League, characterized by six teams from the Northeast (New York Wanderers,
Trenton Nationals, Millville Glass Blowers, Bristol Pile Drivers, Camden Skeeters, and
Pennsylvania Bicycle Club) was an early precursor to the American Basketball League (founded
1925), the Basketball Association of America (founded 1946), and the largest and longest-
lasting of them all, the National Basketball Association (founded 1946). While it folded after six
truncated seasons, the NBL, along with colleges, YMCA, and the organic spread of the game,
helped to raise the national profile of basketball. As a fun side note, the original copy of Dr.
James Naismith’s 13 Rules sold for $4.3 million in 2010. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall
of Fame, opened in 1959, is located in the game’s original birthplace of Springfield,
Massachusetts.

Below is a brief overview of the generally acknowledged important highlights of the game's
development.

1891 Naismith was a 30-year-old instructor at the local YMCA training school and
he was tasked with coming up with an activity to be played indoors during
winter,
1893 The game was also one of the first sports to be played by women as well as
men; only 15 months elapsed between the invention of the game and the first
women's game, played at Smith College.

1896 Wooden backboards were added.

Naismith himself taught the game in Springfield, in Denver at the YMCA
1898 there, and then at the University of Kansas, where he taught the game (as a
teacher of physical education) until shortly before his death in 1939.
1898 The first pro basketball league, the National Basketball League was formed.
1898 Many of his players soon figured out that dribbling wasn't against Naismith's
rules, and adopted it. Naismith himself liked the invention, and dribbling was
made part of the official rules.
The number of players on the court was limited to five, after some games had
1900 gotten out of control, with reports of more than 50 people trying to play on the
court at once
1904 Basketball became an Olympic sport, only furthering its worldwide popularity
(though its first exposure in the Olympics came even earlier as an exhibition).
1910 The American colonial government first introduced basketball in the
Philippines making it part of the physical education curriculum in schools. It
was originally intended as an activity for girls, as baseball and track and field
were deemed too rough and intense.

1927 Harlem Globetrotters, just an exhibition team (not in a professional league)

came into existence.
1932 FIBA, the Fédération Internationale de Basketball, the governing body of the
sport internationally, was formed in Geneva, Switzerland.
1937 Early Pro Leagues in the National Basketball League (NBL) was created by
three corporations: General Electric, Firestone and Goodyear.
1938 National Invitational Tournament, or NIT, a group of sports writers in New
York wanted to introduce the concept of a national college basketball
champion.
1939 National Collegiate Association to form its own basketball championship
tournament only a year later. In Athletic Association NCAA The success of the
NIT led the National Collegiate Athletic.
1940 The first basketball game was aired on TV in the United States,
1954 Shot Clock Introduced in Pro Game, the league and more specifically one
man helped revolutionize the sport and save pro bask
1960 The world's tallest basketball player based on Guinness World Records, was
Suleiman Ali Nashnush, a towering 2.45m player of the Libyan team.
1975 The Philippine Basketball Association was founded
1995 The New York Nicks won 12 straight games against the Boston Celtics and
were the first to do so.
1996-1998 Michael Jordan and Chicago Bulls In The 90's The '90s belonged largely to
Michael and the Bulls. They won their six titles in two three-peats, first from
'91-'93 and then '96-'98.
1998 The Garrett Falcons Varsity Boys Basketball team made the most number of
three point shots in a single game, with 32 shots going through for a final
score of 117 to the opponent's 39.
2008 Unsurprisingly, the USA basketball team has scored the most number of
Olympic gold medals since the sport was introduced to the Games in 1936.
They won their 13th in Beijing Games.
2009 The all-amateur Smart Gilas team became the country's official representative
in international competitions. The PBA's role in forming a national team was
thus reduced to sending up reinforcements to beef up the national squad.

2010 The largest crowd to witness a basketball game was logged for the NBA All-
Star Game in Dallas, Texas with 108,713 viewers in attendance.
2010
The longest marathon playing basketball, with the final scores logged at
9900-8169 was played. The game was played for a straight 107 hours where
no rest breaks were taken

FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

Ball. For official games, whether it is in the

professional leagues or in elementary
school, the size of a regulation basketball is
usually ½ the size of the hoop’s diameter.
Professional and amateur leagues, such as
the NBA, WNBA, FIBA, and NCAA, usually
maintain their own regulation sizes and
weight. This is the reason why we often see
different sizes of basketballs despite being
called regulation size.

The typical size of a basketball for all ages

goes as follows:
Boys aged 13 and older: Size 7 ball (29.5 inch circumference, 22 oz., used at the men’s
professional level)

Boys aged 10-12, Girls aged 11 and older: Size 6 ball (28.5 inch circumference, 20 oz., used at
the women’s professional level)

Boys aged 7-9, Girls aged 7-10: Size 5 Ball (27.5 inch circumference, 17 oz., used in many
standard youth leagues)

Boys and girls aged 6 and under: Size 3 ball (22 inch circumference, 10 oz.,) and size 4 ball
(25.5 inch circumference, 14 oz.,) depending on the strength and development of the child.

These are the general guidelines for basketball sizes for all players. Youth leagues may have
different protocols, and certain children, because of the varying growth rate of adolescents, may
be prepared to use a larger ball at a younger age. It is important to note that all basketballs
should be inflated to the proper level that, if they are dropped from a height of six feet, they
bounce back up roughly 50 inches.

Three Types of Basketballs

Leather – these basketballs are made from 100% genuine leather cover. When a leather ball is
new, it may feel somewhat hard to feel, but with a bit of wear, it becomes soft having an
appealing broken-in feel. Leather basketballs are strictly for indoor hardwood court only
because the feel of the leather will roughen when used on concrete surfaces. Leather
basketballs are also the most expensive of the three types of basketballs.

Composite / Synthetic Leather – these basketballs are covered with artificial or synthetic leather
material that has the feel of leather, as it has been designed that way, but much cheaper to
produce and manufacture. Since it is synthetic, the material has a uniform feel which is why it
does not need to be broken-in as it already has that soft feel even when new.

Rubber – these basketballs are lined with rubber covering and are ideal for concrete surfaces.
Rubber basketballs are perfect for beginners, especially since they are the cheapest to produce.

Basketballs have grooves on them sometimes referred to as channeling. Some are wide and
some are narrow. Channels not only provide basketball players better grip, but they can also be
used for better fingertip control, particularly when applying backspins.
The regulation leather and composite leather balls used in the leagues or competition
mentioned above should not be used for outdoor games, particularly on rough concrete or
asphalt surfaces. The roughness of the surface will quickly and easily wear down the texture of
the ball making them lose their grip. For outdoor basketball games, rubber balls should be used
as the material is designed to withstand the sandpaper like surface of a concrete floor.

Backboards. Each of the two backboards

shall be made of hard wood, 3cm thick or of
a suitable transparent material and their
dimensions shall be 1.80m horizontally and
1.20m vertically. Borders of the backboards
shall be marked with a line 5cm wide.
These lines shall be of a color contrasting
with the background. The backboards shall
be rigidly mounted in a position at each end
of the court at right angles to the floor,
parallel to the end lines and with their lower
edges 2.75m above the floor. Their centers shall lie in the perpendiculars erected at the points
in the court 1.20m from the mid points of the end lines.
Baskets. The basket used in basketball shall comprise the rings and the nets. The rings shall
be constructed of solid iron of 0.45m inside diameter. The diameter of the metal of the rings
shall be between 0.17m and 0.20m. The basket should be rigidly attached to the backboards
and lie in a horizontal plane 3.05m above the floor. The nets of the white cord shall be
suspended from the rings and made in such a way so that they check the ball momentarily as it
passes through the basket. The length of the net is 0.40m.

Below is a detailed drawing that includes FIBA line marking dimensions, backboard and
ring/rim, and net.
