MODULE VIII CHEMICAL SAFETY

PPEs to protect the face from splashing liquids & harm full things: -

Safety glasses, Goggles, Face shields, Gloves, Protective footwear,

Rubber apron, Gas mask, Lab coat, Fire extinguisher, Eye wash/shower

SAFETY RULES WHEN WORKING WITH: -

CHEMICAL SUSTANCES BATTERIES

1. Be aware of location of safety equipment. 1. Battery room should be well ventilated.
2. Never work in the laboratory alone. 1. Do not breathe vapors of battery acid.
3. Wear proper PPEs. 2. No smoking in battery area.
4. Never taste & avoid smelling any chemical. 3. Do not work on battery with running engine
5. Never eat, smoke or drink in a laboratory. 4. Wear proper protective clothing.
6. Properly dispose of waste materials. 5. Metal jewelry should not be worn.
7. Properly label all reagents. 6. Battery area should be provided deluge showers.
14. Never perform unauthorized experiment. 7. Be careful during lifting the batteries.
16. Be very careful in handling glassware.
20. Keep the wok area clean.
21. Use adequate ventilation.
FLAMMABLE & COMBUSTIBLE LIQUIDS
1. Exhaust system should be available in store
2. Draw out the chemical as much as needed.
4. Use a funnel when pouring into a small container.
5. Clean up spills & drips immediately.
10. Working area should be ventilated.
12. Use rubber gloves during the work.
13. Wash the hands and face after work.
15. Keep the fire away from flammables.
WITH PLASTICS
1. Wear proper eye protection
3. Use proper ventilation
4. Never work around open flames
5. Wear protective clothing.
6. Wear protective gloves
1. Use appropriate respirator.
2. Properly dispose of waste materials.

Glassware is used in the laboratories because it is

(1)Inert(2)Fairly Easy to Clean(3)Relatively Inexpensive(4)Convenient to use being transparent.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM

It is designed by NFPA (National Fire Protection Association). It
has a Diamond Shaped Diagram which gives idea of hazards & severity of these hazards.
It shows FOUR information. (a) Flammability of chemical (b) Health hazard by the chemical .
(c) Reactivity of chemical (d) Some specific hazards.
Hazards have five numeric grades. 0(Non), 1(Slightly), 2(Moderately), 3(Highly), 4(Extremely).
MSDS(Material Safety Data Sheet) gives detailed information of a chemical & its hazards.

1. Identifiers
2. Hazardous ingredients
3. PELs(Permissible Exposure Limits)
4. Physical/Chemical Data
5. Fire & Explosion Data
6. Reactivity Data
7. Health Hazard Data
8. Spill & leak Procedure
9. Special protection
10.Special precaution
RADIOACTIVE SUBSTANCE
Gamma rays are radiation hazards in industry used for:

(1) Non Destructive Testing (NDT) (2) X-Ray.

Excessive radiation breaks the cells of human body which results radiation sickness.

There are two radiation hazards for human body:

(1) Internally (due to airborne dust)

(2) Externally (radiation from source)
Two devices are commonly used to measure the amount of exposure:
(1) Dosimeter (2) Film badge

PRECAUTIONS
1. Workers must wear respirators.
2. Workers must wear protective clothing.
3. Maximize the DISTANCE between worker & source.
4. Limit the TIME of exposure.
5. SHIELDING by thick & dense metal.
Distance, Time & Shielding are safety influencing factors.
