THE UAE ECONOMY BEFORE OIL
• Unfortunately UAE pearls were replaced by
artificial Japanese pearls by the 1900’s
• By the early 1900’s the Japanese had
discovered a way to make artificial and
flawless pearls, which unfortunately caused
the pearl industry in the UAE to plummet.
That and the discovery of oil in the Arabian
Peninsula caused many local Emiratis to shift
positions from the pearl industry to the oil
sector.

• Oil was found in the UAE in the late 1950s. The country started to benefit from selling it once the
seven Emirates became united.
• The UAE government witnessed important economic and social developments since 1971.
• The capita share of GDP increased from 20.2 thousand dhs in 1972 to 62.4 thousand dhs in
1998.
• The per capita government spending on education, health and other services increased from 3
thousand Dhs to 12.2 thousand in 1998.

• This made it one of the highest rates of economic growth in the world
• Thus helping to stimulate high level of capital flow and ensure economic
diversification.
• Economic diversification means having other economic activities that bring
money to the country.

PRODUCTION OF OIL IN THE UAE

• Abu Dhabi owns more than 90%of the oil and gas reserves .
• Gas derivatives are used in power generation and desalination of
sea water. Both are used for public consumption and used as fuel for
heavy industries (smelters)
• The State institutions run the investments( most often with foreign
partners) especially in the oil and gas sectors.
• Also, privatization is encouraged to participate in essential industries.

• In 2009, UAE hosted the International atomic renewable energy.

• The average annual growth in wages in the period 1972 to 1998
was about 19.1%.
• They achieved a high rate of growth in workers’ productivity
reaching 6.9% per year (from 1972-1998) due expansion of
training and introducing of modern methods of work.
• UAE has the fastest growing and dynamic economy in the Arabian
Gulf region, not only because of huge reserves of oil and gas, but
also of non-oil economy.

AGRICULTURE

• The state had policies that increased the cultivated area and thus increased the
agricultural production.
• Agriculture: Industries such as canning vegetables, dates and food were established.
• Despite weather conditions, the leadership showed interest in the sector and supported
it.
• This helped to reduce food imports to meet the demand of the rapid growth of the
population.
• Also an extensive program of forestation. One hundred fifty million trees were planted
in the desert.
• More than 30 million palm trees are planted making UAE one of the largest producers
of dates in the world.

EXPO2020
Choosing Dubai to host expo shows the international trust that people from other
countries have for the leaders of the UAE.
• Expo2020 was scheduled to open on October 2020. However, due to Covid19, Expo was
postponed to 2021.
• Near Expo opening, the number of Covid19 cases became less.
• This made people from around the world feel that it is now safe to come and visit Expo, since the
country is taking its safety measures which include: vaccination program, mandatory use of masks
in closed places, less costly PCR tests, in addition to maintaining social distancing.
• Expo2020 helped in reviving the economy after its economic losses during the pandemic.

environmental and constructional policies

• The first field of green energy aims to promote the production and use of renewable
energy.
• The second field includes government policies aimed to encourage investments in the
green economy and to facilitate the production, import, export and re-export of green
products and technologies.
• The third field relates to developing urban planning policies that preserve the
environment and to raise the efficiency of housing and buildings environmentally.
• The fourth field consists of means for dealing with the effects of climate change,
promoting organic agriculture, maintaining biodiversity and protecting ecological
balance.
• The fifth field aims at rationalizing the use of water resources, electricity and natural
resources and recycling waste.
• The sixth field includes development and promotion of green technology

What do you know about Masdar City?
• Established in 2006, in Abu Dhabi.
• Develops both utility-scale and off-grid renewable energy projects
• Active in more than 30 countries worldwide
• The power generating capacity of the renewable energy projects in which Masdar is a
partner is about 10 gigawatts (GW), representing a combined investment of
approximately US$19.9 billion
• Clean technologies deployed: onshore and offshore wind power, solar photovoltaics (PV),
concentrated solar power, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), waste-to-
energy, water desalination, electricity and thermal energy storage

• Aims to be one of the most sustainable urban communities in the world

• The first Estidama 4 Pearl community in Abu Dhabi

conventional buildings
• Buildings use low-carbon cement as well as other locally sourced and verified materials

• Iconic Personal Rapid Transport (PRT) network of driverless vehicles has carried more than 2 million

NUCLEAR ENERGY IN THE UAE
.To meet the country’s demand in electricity.
• Nuclear field:
It has signed a nuclear energy contract led by U.S. and Korea Electric Power
Corporation with the first station which began operating in 2017 and the rest of
the stations to be completed in 2020.
• This is the first nuclear power plant in the UAE and in the Arab world
as well.
• Location: Al Dhafra area in Abu Dhabi, 280km away from the city centre.
Power supply: 25 per cent of the UAE's peak-energy needs will be met
with the electricity generated when the plant is fully operational. by the
four units at the plant.

INCIDENTS THAT AFFECTED THE UAE ECONOMY
The Global Financial crisis in 2008 and Covid-19.
• UAE has confirmed to the Third Committee of the General Assembly of the UN in
14-10-2009 that the country survived the impact of the global financial crisis by
taking precautionary measures.
• This ensures the continuation of the economic development projects, social stability
(per capita income), and fulfillment of their commitments to the foreign
humanitarian assistance.
• The World Bank classified UAE among the top 10 countries which managed to
minimize the impact of the crisis.

• We must learn how to maintain the self-identity of the society, its traditions,

serious challenges that the society might face.
• We need to know how to keep the Arabic language, the language of the holy Quran,

technology through cross-cultural exchange due to advances in communication
systems and economic interests.

principles included in the Internim Constitution of the Union through the main

UAE Centennial Plan 2071
• H. H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime
Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai launched UAE Centennial Plan 2071. It is a
long-term, full-vision plan that extends for 5 decades after 2021. It forms a long-
term roadmap for the government work.
• The UAE Centennial 2071 is based on four pillars as follows:

• The objectives of the government under UAE Centennial 2071 include establishing

• Regarding education, UAE Centennial 2071 highlights the importance of excellent

entrepreneurship and innovation and to be international research centers.

• Community development is an integral part of UAE Centennial 2071. Some
objectives in this regard include establishing a secure, tolerant, cohesive and
ethical society that embraces happiness and a positive lifestyle and a high quality
of life. The pillar also focuses on developing programmes to prepare future
generations to serve as the UAE’s goodwill ambassadors, as well as promoting
women's participation in all sectors, making the UAE one of the best places to live
in.
