The diagrams depict the extent of changes in the town center since 1990.
Overall, the town center has undergone significant transformations, notably with the construction
of a large shopping mall and the conversion of housing. Additionally, the area has become more
pedestrian-friendly.
In 1990, the center of the town embraced a park, a library, and a town hall, surrounded by Smith,
Green, Oldfield, and Newton Streets. The northern side of Smith Street was attached to small,
specialized shops such as a newsagent, grocery store, bakery, butcher, and cafe, along with a
large childcare center. On the southern side, Green Street featured a row of terraced houses,
while on Oldfield Street, to the east, there were two banks opposite the childcare center and town
hall.
Currently, the row of shops on Smith Street has been replaced by a large shopping mall. Whilst
the childcare center and the bank at the corner of Smith and Oldfield Streets remain unchanged.
The park, library, and town hall have also remained the same. However, Smith Street has been
converted into a pedestrian zone. The terraced houses on Green Street have been turned into
apartment blocks, and the bank opposite the town hall has been modified to a cafe. Additionally,
zebra crossings have been installed on Oldfield Street and Green Street, linking the town hall to
the cafe and apartment blocks.
