2. Classify each of the following as nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio data.

a. The time required to produce each tire on an assembly line
b. The number of quarts of milk a family drinks in a month
c. The ranking of four machines in your plant after they have been designated as

80 students. It is 20 years. Based on this sample, she then estimates the mean age of all
students enrolled at the college to be 20 years. In what way are descriptive statistics
involved in this example? In what way are inferential statistics involved?

4. Aiman went to the supermarket and purchased three cans of 15 ounces of tomato puree,
15 ounces of green peas and 20 ounces of baked beans, two packages of nuts (walnuts
and almond), four different kinds of vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, and

ounces chocolate chip cookies).
Name data sets that are quantitative discrete, quantitative continuous, and qualitative.

5. For each statement, decide whether descriptive or inferential statistics is used.

a. The average life expectancy in New Zealand is 78.49 years. Source: World Factbook
2004.
b. A diet high in fruits and vegetables will lower blood pressure. Source: Institute of

a. How many elements are in the dataset? Write down these elements.
b. How many variables are in the dataset? Write down these variables
c. How many observations are in the dataset? Write down these observations.
d. Which of the above are qualitative and quantitative?

7. A study conducted at Mount College revealed that students who attended class 95 to
100% of the time usually received an A in the class. Students who attended class 80 to
90% of the time usually received a B or C in the class. Students who attended class less
than 80% of the time usually received a D or an F or eventually withdrew from the class.

Based on this information, attendance and grades are related. The more you attend
class, the more likely you will receive a higher grade. If you improve your attendance,
your grades will probably improve.

a. What are the variables under this study?

b. What are the data in the study?
c. Are descriptive, inferential or both types of statistics used?
d. What is the population under study?
e. Was a sample collected? If so, from where?
f. From the information given, comment on the relationship between the variables.

8. Classify the following random variable according to whether it is discrete or continuous
