Priorities

Priorities

~== Priorities are the main things that the

Mayor wants to do.

~-

The Mayor wants to:

• reduce and prevent violence.

• increase trust and confidence.

• support the victims of crime.

A victim is someone who is harmed
or injured because of a crime.

• protect people from being harmed

and from being treated badly.

5
Reduce and prevent violence
The Mayor wants to make London
safer for everyone.
Safe
He will look at:

• violence that affects young people.

• making London safer for women

and girls.

• ways to stop people who have

already been violent from being
violent again in the future.

• ways to deal with hate crime.

Hate crime is being harassed or
attacked because people think you
are different.

• ways to deal with terrorism.

Terrorism is where someone causes
damage to people or property:
• because of their beliefs or
politics.
• to make other people scared in
their daily lives.

6
Violence that affects young
people

The Mayor will:

• stop organised crime groups from

working and bring the most violent
people to court.

• catch people who use guns and

take guns off the street.

• work to catch more people who are

violent.

• help young people to stay safe.

Illegal drugs
A lot of the violence comes from
people who deal in illegal drugs.

7
The Mayor will:

• work with experts to look at the

best ways to deal with people who
use and deal in drugs.

• work with health services and other

organisations reduce the amount
people use illegal drugs.

• stop criminal gangs from forcing

young people to do illegal things.

Public transport and roads

The Mayor will work to keep violence
off the buses, trains and roads.

Victims of violence
The Mayor will help to provide more
support to young people who have
suffered from violence.

8
Making London safer for
women and girls
There has been an increase in
violence towards women and girls
recently.

t
Plan The Mayor has separate plans about
Plan how to deal with violence towards
woman and girls.

These plans include:

• arresting and taking to court people

who commit violence against
women and girls.

• better support for women and girls

who have suffered violence.

• looking into ways to stop people

being so violent.

9
As well as this, the Mayor wants to:

• improve the way the police look into

violence against women and girls.

• improve the help that women and

girls can get from refuges.
Refuges are safe places that
women and girls can go to escape
Safe from someone who is harming
them.

• help the police deal with certain

harmful behaviour, like Female
•• Genital Mutilation (FGM).

-,x~ Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is

when a woman’s private parts are
cut, injured or changed without a
medical reason. It is illegal in the
UK.

• ask the Government to change the

law so that crime against someone
Change
because of their gender is also
La called a hate crime.

10
• stop people being harassed on
buses and trains because of their
sex.

• stop people being threatened when

they go to abortion clinics.
An abortion clinic helps women
who have become pregnant but
need or want to end the pregnancy.

• keep women and girls safe in public

places.

• change bad attitudes towards

women and help everyone to treat
men and women in the same fair
way.
Change

11
Reducing violent behaviour
The Mayor wants to stop people who
have already been violent from being
violent again in the future.

It is often the same people who cause

a lot of the violence.

The Mayor will:

• make sure police and the courts get

support to deal with violent people
properly.

• work with other organisations to

improve the behaviour of violent
people.

• work to change the behaviour of

violent people towards women and
girls.

12
• help young people who have been
in trouble with the law to change
Change their behaviour.

• work with youth workers to give

young people the support they
need.

• set up a project that helps young

people who are in trouble with the
law to turn away from crime.

• work with other organisations to

find out more about why people get
involved in crime.

• help people who might get involved

in crime to find the training they
need to get a good job instead.

13
Dealing with hate crime
The Mayor will not put up with any
hate crime at all.

The Mayor will:

• stand up for all the different

communities of people who live in
London.

• make sure that people who have

suffered from hate crime get the
support they need.

• work with the communities who

suffer from most of the hate crime
to help more people to report any
hate crime that happens to them.

• work to make sure there is no hate

crime on buses or trains.

14
Working together to stop
terrorism

The Mayor will:

• work with the police and other

organisations to understand and
stop terrorism.

• support projects that stop people

wanting to become involved with
terrorism.

• work with other organisations to

help stop people wanting to
become involved with terrorism.

Plan
• make sure there are good plans so
the police and other organisations
know how to quickly deal with
terrorism.

15
Increase trust and
confidence
The Mayor wants:

• people to be able to trust the police

more.

• the police to work with local people

more and treat them fairly.

• the police and local councils to deal

with anti-social behaviour.
Anti-social behaviour is when you
do things which upset and annoy
other people.

The Mayor will:

• involve more people from different
communities in checking what the
police do.

• make sure police officers behave in

the right way.

• punish police officers who are not

behaving in the right way.

16
• help the police to learn from what
has happened so they can work in
better ways in the future.

• help the police to be better at

explaining how they work.

• make sure the police brings in new

officers and staff from different
communities and backgrounds.

• help the police to use new

computers, phones and the internet
better.

• make sure the police listen to

people in London, especially young
people.

Creating safer communities

The Mayor wants to reduce
neighbourhood crimes like robbery
and anti-social behaviour.

17
Support the victims of crime

The Mayor has already done a lot to

help victims of crime.

He has:

• created the Victim’s Commissioner -

this is a person who can speak up
for victims of crime.

• supported many services for victims

of crime.

But people are having to wait a long

time before a case goes to court. The
Mayor has no power over the courts.

18
So, the Mayor wants:

• to improve the services for victims

of crime.

• cases to go to court quicker.

• to deal with situations where

someone keeps getting attacked by
the same person.

19
Protect people from being
harmed

Young people are in danger of being

used by criminals to do illegal things.
This is very dangerous for young
people.

The Mayor is working so that:

• young people who have got into

trouble with the police are
supported and kept safe.

• fewer young people are used by

criminals to do illegal things.

• local people are protected when

they are:
• out and about
• at home
• online.

20
The Mayor will protect young people
by:

• improving the way that child

protection services work.

• working with other organisations to

keep children and young people
safe.

• working with other organisations to

deal with situations where young
people are being used by criminals.

• supporting young people who have

recently been looked after by their
local council.

• working harder to find young people

who go missing.

• working with bus and train

companies to keep people safe on
the buses and trains.

21
• making sure that police records
show if someone is a vulnerable
person.
Vulnerable means you might need
help and support to stay safe and
well.

• having better ways of keeping

information about people who
commit crimes.

• having teams of police looking at

keeping children and young people
safe online.

• looking for ways to help victims who

have mental health problems
caused by crime, and who then go
on to commit a crime themselves.

• stopping organised criminals who

treat people as slaves.

• working with parliament to make

better laws to keep people safe
online.

22

that the police are working properly.

• set up a better way of keeping

information about the way the

23
Information

about:
• how well the police are working.

• how the police are spending their

money.

• make sure that the police are

keeping information about people in
a safe and secure way.

with complaints properly.

• make sure that independent people

are able to come and check how the
police are looking after people who
are kept in a cell at a police station.

24
Supporting the police
The Mayor will carry on supporting the
police.

He will work to make sure the police

get the money they need to bring in
more police officers.

He is giving money to the police so

they can improve their computers.

He is helping the police to have fewer,

but better buildings.

He is helping the police to protect the

environment and not make too much
pollution that causes climate change.

Climate change is big changes in the

weather. For example, storms getting
worse than they used to be. Or having
less rain in some places.
