Analytical Paragraph 2
Analytical writing requires a student to summarise or provide a
description in about 150-200 words of a particular graph (line, bar or
pie chart), table, map, report, chart, or process (how a particular
action/job is done or how it works). This writing exercise is used to
test a student's ability to describe and compare data, select and
report the main features of the graph, table, map, etc., analyse the
significant trends in factual information, or simply describe the key
features of a particular process.
Points to remember while writing an analytical paragraph :
1. This section will have two to three paragraphs.
2. The first paragraph will be an introduction/description of the graph,
table, map, etc. Remember if the question has a brief description, do
not copy the description rather paraphrase it.
3. While identifying the key features, remember the highest and
lowest categories are important along with the significant differences
between categories.
4. Use formal language, keep sentences short to the point and do
not use contractions.
5. Use passive voice wherever possible.
6. Be brief and to the point; do not beat about the bush.
7. After identifying the key features of the graph, table, map, etc.,
also provide your observations.Vocabulary to use while describing the Graph, Map, Table, etc.

Sample Analytical Paragraphs:
MAP
Given below is the map for Raj Town in the year 1995 and that of
today. Prepare an analytical report indicating the changes that have
taken place in the town.
The people in Raj Town have witnessed changes that have only
quadrupled within a pan of two decades. What was once a quaint
fishing port that provided sustenance to the locals is now a fancy
living complex with modern facilities for both the locals and city
dwellers. The city has indeed transformed from its humble farming
and fishing facilities.
In 1995, the port city had fewer housing facilities, one central hotel,
huge farm landholdings and even forest cover. The port city boasted
of its own fishing port and local fish market. One observes that thefew shops may have provided basic amenities as the port city was
self-sufficient. The city also had a housing complex as well as
standalone houses.
All this has changed with the introduction of various technological
changes. Today the farmland and the forest cover are transformed
into a giant golf court and two spacious tennis courts. The fish
markets have been replaced by sea-facing apartments for those
wishing to seek solace by the sea. There is also a car park besides
the hotel. Moreover, the shops have been replaced by restaurants
and the housing complex has made several additions. The only
constant about the Town is the café which has withstood the
onslaughts of time and the hotel. One can only help wonder about
the disappearing forest and the fact that technology, though has
several positives, also comes with its own set of negatives.
CHART
The table below provides consumer spending information on six
items in different countries in 2019. Prepare an analytical report by
selecting and reporting the main features of the spending habits,
and make comparisons where relevant.
Count Food/Drinks | Clothing/Footwear Leisure/
2 Education
USA 28.91% 443% 2.35%
South 16.36% 10% 4.20%
Korea
India 18% 5.45% 2.50%
UK 14% 6.41% 5.22%
Singapore 33% 3.56% 4.35%The table indicates the consumer spending information in 2019
based on six items or categories in five countries. The information
presented in the table is as varied as the countries. The table
indicates the spending information on food, drinks, clothing,
footwear, leisure and education. While the information indicates that
people spend less in leisure and education, the most expenditure is
on food and drinks. A significant amount of money is also spent on
clothing and footwear.
Countries have been selected on the basis of region and depict a
varied percentage in spending levels. While consumers in Singapore
spend most of their money in food and drinks, consumers in the USA
spend a far lesser amount on clothing, footwear, leisure and
education. Consumers in India on average spend about 18% of their
income on food and drinks, 5.45% of their income on clothing and
footwear and marginally less on leisure and education. Consumers
in UK spend about 14% of their income on food and drinks but spend
a significantly higher amount on shopping, leisure and education.
Consumers in South Korea spend a median amount of their income
in all six categories. The spending habits are an indication of the
income that the consumers earn and how much they are willing to
spend. This may be useful when forecasting the budget.
REPORT
“Istanbul, Turkey: A report forecasting the birth and death rates
from 1901-2101 in Turkey was released to the public last
evening. The birth rate till date has been consistently higher
than the death rate. Standing at 20,000 in 1901, it peaked to a
76,000 in 1961 and has consistently fluctuated between 65 and
80 thousand. The prediction indicated that the birth rate will
decline to about 52,000 by the end of the century.
In contrast, the death rate at 1901 was 10,000 and has only
increased by leaps and bounds. This increase is expected to
accelerate between 2023 and 2061 when the rate will probablylevel off at 70,000, before dropping slightly in 2101. Moreover,
this contrasting trend indicates that the death rate will probably
overtake the birth rate in and around 2047 and the large gap
between the two levels will be reversed in the later part of this
century.”
Prepare an analytical report by selecting and reporting the main
features of the report and indicating the difference between these
two trends.
The Turkish forecasting reports on the birth and death rate from
1901-2101 indicates a varying trend in both categories that
significantly rise and decline through the decades. Though the birth
rate in the country is higher than the death rate, the report indicates
that this may take a marginal turn in the later part of the century.
The birth rate at the start of the century was at 20,000 which
experienced a rise to about 76,000 in 1961 and has then consistently
landed between 65,000 to 80,000 through the years. However, data
indicates that the birth rate may experience a sharp fall to about
52,000 in 2101. The death rate is significantly varied. While in 1901 it
stood at 10,000, predicative data indicates that it will level off at
70,000 before dropping at a smaller level in 2101. The death rate in
turn will overtake the birth rate by 2047. Moreover, this trend is also
indicative of the decline of marriages and the mindset of people that
propagation is the only way forward. A higher death rate is also
indicative of the lack of medical facilities in combating diseases that
may arise due to super-viruses. To balance of these rates the
Government should consider introducing plans that help level both
the rates at this stage.
LINE - GRAPH
The following data in the graph indicates the percentage of children
in Grade 10 in Model Town who have joined coaching institutes and
which has only increased further. Describe in 150-200 words how
this trend has only changed over the years. The histogram indicates the percentage of students in Grade 10 from
Model Town who have availed of services from coaching institutes
who help them prepare for their board exams as well as other
entrance and competitive exams. The graph shows a significant
increase of students joining these institutes over the years which has
not waned. While 1990 shows about 2.5% of students enrolling
themselves in such institutes, about 7.5% of students are part of
these institutes in 2010. The trend of joining coaching institutes
doubles by a percent through the years. However, the margin
increases significantly between 2000 and 2005.
This trend indicates that more students place their trust in the town in
local coaching institutes then on self-study. While schools do provide
the students with all guidance, what can be construed is that
students go out to seek for more coaching with a view to prepare
themselves for other competitive exams. Moreover, most of these
institutes also begin preparing students for the engineering and
medical entrance exams at the earlier stages. Therefore, students
willingly in Model town choose to join such institutes. One can also
presume that most students would rather spend their hours receiving
extra coaching then spend time for leisure or other activities.
Analytical Paragraphs Based On Charts, Graphs, Cues, Hints,
etc.
1. Write an analytical paragraph based on the following table:Different types | Year-wise Year-wise Year-wise
of schools in | percentage percentage of percentage of
India of attendance attendance
attendance
Year 2000 2005 2010
City govt. 59% 65% 67%
schools
Village govt. 31% 35% 39%
schools
General English 58% 55% 60%
medium schools
Public schools 75% 77% 79%
The 'Table' shows year wise percentage of attendance in four
different types of schools of India. The percentage of attendance is
recorded with a gap of 5 years.
As it is clear from the given data, from 2000 to 2010 there is a steady
and positive increase in the percentage of attendance in all the four
types of schools. The attendance in public schools is much higher
compared to the other three types of schools. Initially, the village
schools show a noticeably poor percentage in attendance. At the
same time, the ‘General English Medium’ schools witnessed less
attendance than the public schools.
All in all, the continuous higher percentage indicates that the relevant
authorities are concerned about improving the country's education.
Therefore, the 'Government' must have taken an effective measure
to improve the literacy in the villages. Noteworthy, public school
attendance indicates solid infrastructure and focuses on the healthy
growth of the corresponding authorities.
2. The two pie charts below show the online shopping trends in
Delhi.Write an analytical paragraph based on the given information by
selecting and reporting the main features and making relevant
comparisons.
2. Write an analytical paragraph based on the following bar
chart:
The bar chart shows the percentage of females entering higher
education in the years 1985 and 1995. The chart shows the
percentages in four countries, India, London, Italy, Russia. The data
is shown in millions. Overall, the proportion of women in higher
education is increased in the four countries.
In general, there were more female students in 1995 than in 1985,
with more than half of women in higher education in all of the four
countries. In addition, in four of the countries, the percentage of
women going into higher education rose.
The most dramatic change was in India, where the percentage is
more than doubled. The least of all change was seen in London
change. The only country where there was no increase was Italy.
Although the percentage of Australian women going into higher
education remained the same. Russia's highest percentage of
women went for higher education, which sustained its position even
after a decade.
3. Analyse the picture in your own words.Rising pollution- a serious cause of concern
Our world is suffering a great deal because of the rising problem of
pollution. It is really painful to see the city and its environment
suffering for years. There used to be trees on the city roads. Also, a
few vehicles were plying on them. Life was peaceful and free. Now it
has become a thing of the distant future. The smoke emitted by
vehicles has become a health hazard causing many respiratory
diseases like asthma, bronchitis etc. Also, noise pollution has greatly
increased. The smoke being emitted from chimneys of factories
contains poisonous gases like carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.
These cause various breathing-related problems and later serious
diseases. The trees look diseased and withered. The drains used to
be cleaned. But now, they are seldom cleaned. Mounds of sewage
are seen piled up on thoroughfares. Thus the city has become unfit
for healthy living. It is all due to increasing environmental pollution.
These calls for immediate steps by all of us to check the increasing
environmental pollution. If immediate steps are not taken in this
direction, the world may soon become unsuitable for living.
4. Write an analytical paragraph on whether the Internet is
useful or not based on cues given below.

have access to the Internet.
5. The line graph shows Delhi Metro station passengers. Write
an analytical paragraph on the information provided by the
graph and make comparison where relevant.
‘Saat
The line-graph depicts the number of people using a metro in New
Delhi over a given day of a year.
The number of passengers rises sharply in the morning reaching a
peak of 1500 at 7 am. After the morning peak there is a steady drop
to 800 at around 9 am and less than 500 at 12 in the noon. After 12
there is a steady increase in the number of passengers. 1000
passengers boarded the train at 3:00 pm .The evening brings ahuge increase from 1200 at 4 pm to almost 1600 at 5 pm. The
number of passengers tapers off slightly after 5 pm, but falls quickly
to 200 by 8 pm.
All in all, the time series show that the greatest number of
passengers gather in the station early in the morning and also early
in the evening when it is their time to go to work and in the evening
when they come back from work and take the train to home. In
between the travelling is less mostly by those who are going to or
coming from some personal business.
