INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS
All from 9 & last from 10

This is one of the 16 Sutras, Nikhilam Sutra. This is very

important and easy formula that we can use for
subtraction from base number like 10 / 100 / 1000 /
10000 and so on. Power of 10.
Here, all the digits of 2nd number (which needs to be
subtracted) from 9 & last digit of 2nd number is
subtracted from 10.

Example: 1000 – 376

1 0 0 0
- 3 7 6
-----------------------
6 2 4

Explanation – 6 of U. P is subtracted from 10 = 4

7 of T. P is subtracted from 9 = 2
3 of H. P is subtracted from 9 = 6

P a g e 4 | 70

Step 4 Vedic Mathematics Inspiring Education Plus

INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS
Example: 1000 – 348

1 0 0 0
- 3 4 8
----------------------------
6 5 2

Special Case- Where number ends with 0

1 0 0 0
- 6 4 0
-----------------------------
3 6 0

Here, U.P is 0 so it will be as it is. So, we will apply

subtraction from 10 on T. P & rest same

P a g e 5 | 70

Step 4 Vedic Mathematics Inspiring Education Plus

INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS
Special Case (Adding Zeroes)

In all of the examples, we have noticed that the numbers

of zeros in the first number is the same as the number of
digits in the number being subtracted.

Example: 10000 – 654

1 0 0 0 0
- 6 5 4
--------------------------------------
9 3 4 6

We add an extra zero in front of 654 and then apply the

concept.

Special Case – (Subtracting from a multiple of a base)

or one less

P a g e 6 | 70

Step 4 Vedic Mathematics Inspiring Education Plus

INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS
Example: 7000 – 349

7 0 0 0
- 3 4 9
-----------------------
6 6 5 1

Special Case – Let us Subtract 5000 – 3456

5 0 0 0
- 3 4 5 6
--------------------------------
1 5 4 4

Where to apply? Money related problems are the main

objective for this. This concept is best used in case of
money transaction we come across in our day to day
life.

Step 4 Vedic Mathematics Inspiring Education Plus

INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS
Concept of Doubling

Doubling means double of the number (multiply the

number by 2), but in Vedic maths we will learn how to
multiply faster with 2 and further 4, 8, 16 ….

Example: 4653 by 2

In conventional method we do:

4 6 5 3
X 2
----------------------
8 12 10 6 = 9306

In Vedic maths we will divide the numbers in 2 groups

Group 1 is the number which doesn’t give carry overs
after doubling. Group 2 is numbers which gives carry
overs after doubling. Let’s check

P a g e 8 | 70

Step 4 Vedic Mathematics Inspiring Education Plus

INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS
Group 1 Group 2
0 5
1 6
2 7
3 8
4 9

Let’s take same example:

4 6 5 3–

Step 1 – We will start from left. So, first number is 4.

Now double of 4 is 8. (Which comes in group 1)
Step 2 – Next number is 6 which comes in group 2 So
we will take 1 carry over & write 1 extra with double of 6
= 13
Step 3 – Next digit is 5. Which is again in group 2 but
next digit of 5 is in group 1 So we will write the double of
5 = 10
Step 4 – Next is 3 which is in group 1 so we will write - 6

= 8/13/10/6 = 9406

P a g e 9 | 70

Step 4 Vedic Mathematics Inspiring Education Plus

INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS
Let’s check one more example: 8973762 by 2

8 9 7 3 7 6 2
17 9 4 7 5 2 4
Step 1 – Double of 8 is 16, will take 1 extra as next digit
is from group 2 (9) so = 17
Step 2 – Double of 9 is 18, will take 1 more as next is 7
so = 9 (19’s – 9 is written)
Step 3 – Double of 7 is 14, will write 4 of 14 as it is as
next digit is 3 which comes in group 1
Step 4 – Double of 3 is 6, will take 1 extra as next digit is
7 = (7)
Step 5 – Double of 7 is 14, will write 15 as next digit is 6
which goes to group 2
Step 6 – Double of 6 is 12, will write 2 of 12 as it is. As
next digit 2 which goes in group 1
Step 7 – Double of 2 is 4, will write 4 as it is.

So the answer what we got is 17947524

P a g e 10 | 70

Step 4 Vedic Mathematics Inspiring Education Plus

INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS
Application of doubling

When we have to do divide any number by 5, 50, 500…

Example: 2468 by 5

Here, we will multiply both the numerator & denominator

with 2

2468 by 2 ÷ 5 by 2
4936 ÷ 10 = 49360
Answer = 4936.0

Example: 78245 ÷ 50

156490 ÷ 100 = 1564900

Answer – 15649.00 (as we took double of 50, decimal

will be before 2 digit)

P a g e 11 | 70

Step 4 Vedic Mathematics Inspiring Education Plus

INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS
Concept of Halving

Halving means doing divide the number in 2 parts.

Simply doing division by 2. In Vedic Maths we can do
faster division by 2 / 4/ 8/ 16….

Example: 8 7 4 5 8 ÷ 2
4 31 7 21 9

Step 1 – Starting from left, digit is 8. Half of 8 is 4, we

will write as it is
Step 2 – Next digit is 7, half of 7 comes in decimal so we
will check near & small digit which is 6. Half of 6 is 3 &
reminder will be 1 (3 by 2 = 6 + 1 as reminder) That 1
we will write below the next digit.
Step 3 – Next digit is 4 & 1 from previous digit which
makes 14, half of 14 is 7. Will write as it is.
Step 4 – Next digit is 5, will take near & small digit which
is 4. Half of 4 is 2 & reminder is 1
Step 5 – Next digit is 18 (1 from previous digit & 8)
Will do half which gives 9
Answer – 43729

P a g e 12 | 70

Step 4 Vedic Mathematics Inspiring Education Plus

INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS
We have done division on big number in 1 line without
even doing any lengthy process. This is what Vedic
Maths makes interesting & faster.

Application of halving
When we need to do multiply a number by 5/ 50/ 500…

Example: 1467 * 5
We will multiply both by 2
1467 * 2 * 5 ÷ 2
1467 * 10 (we multiplied 5 * 2) ÷ 2
14670 ÷ 2 = Now same as previous example
14 = half is 7
6 = half is 3
7 = half is not available so near & small or consider 2
digit together = 70 Half is 35

SQUARES
We need to remember at least squares of numbers from
1 to 10. To find any squares of 2 digits & so on

Square of 1 (12) = 1
Square of 2 (22) = 4
Square of 3 (32) = 9
Square of 4 (42) = 16
Square of 5 (52) = 25
Square of 6 (62) = 36
Square of 7 (72) = 49
Square of 8 (82) = 64
Square of 9 (92) = 81
Square of 10 (102) = 100

Vedic Maths allow us to calculate square in various

methods. Let’s start first method of finding a square.

Anurupyena method of finding square of 2 digits.
Meaning – Proportionately
Limitation of this method is – Applicable only for 2 digits

Let’s learn: For any 2 digits (ab) find r = b/a

Step 1: A is T.P & b is U.P

Left Part / Middle Part / Right Part

A2 / L.P * r / M.P * r
L.P * r
Note: r should be single digit

Example: (322)

32 = 9 / 9 * 2/3 = 6 / 6 * 2/3 = 4
9 * 2/3 = 6

Find the square of any 2 /3 /4 digit ending with 5 using
Ekadhikena Purvena Sutra

Example: (152)

L.P M.P R.P

12 1*5*2 52

1 10 25 = 225

Now let’s make this simpler. As we have learned 52 is

25. And this specific method which we are doing is for
digits ending with 5. Which means last 2 digits of square
will be 25. Half answer is done. Now rest half we will
simply do Ekadhikena Purvena, Which means add 1 to
previous one. Here previous one means previous digit of
5. Above example its 1 so 1 + 1 = 2. Here we got the
answer. 225
Example: (352) = 3 +1 = 4 So 3 * 4 = 12
52 = 25
Answer = 1225
