1. Introduction To Vedic
Mathematics

Vedic Mathematics is a collection of Techniques /

Sutras & Formulas to solve mathematical problems in
easy and faster manner. It consists of 16 Sutras & 13
Sutras which are formulas & sub formulas of Vedic
Mathematics, which can be used for problems involved
in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus & much more.

2. USES OF VEDIC MATHEMATICS

(Why to learn Vedic Mathematics?)

➢ It helps to solve mathematical problems 10 – 15

times faster.
➢ It reduces burden (need to learn tables upto 9 only)
➢ It reduces scratch work as well as finger
calculations,
P a g e 3 | 53

Step 1 Vedic Mathematics Inspiring Education Plus

INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS
➢ It helps to increase concentration.
➢ It helps in reducing silly mistakes.

2.Terminology used in Vedic

Mathematics

1. “Ekadhika” means one more.

Example –
➢ Ekadhika of 0 is 1
➢ Ekadhika of 8 is 9
➢ Ekadhika of 22 is 23
➢ Ekadhika of 309 is 310
➢ Ekadhika of 2134 is 2135

2. “Ekanyune” means one less.

Example –
➢ Ekanyune of 3 is 2
P a g e 4 | 53

Step 1 Vedic Mathematics Inspiring Education Plus

INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS
➢ Ekanyune of 25 is 24
➢ Ekanyune of 99 is 98
➢ Ekanyune of 256 is 255

3. “PURak” means Complement. (Subtract Unit

place from 10 and rest all from 9)

Example –

➢ Complement of 3 is 7 (10 – 3)
➢ Complement of 38 is 62 (10-8=2, 9-3=6)
➢ Complement of 80 is 20 (as Unit place is 0 it
remains same & next digit we subtract from 10-8=2)
➢ Complement of 089 is 911 (10-9=1,9-8=1,9-0=9)

4. “REkhank” means a digit with a minus in

front of the digit. Which represents negative
number.

Example -
P a g e 5 | 53

Step 1 Vedic Mathematics Inspiring Education Plus

INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS
➢ (-6) = 4 We treat Purak as Rekhank.
➢ (-4) = 6

5. “bEEjank” is the sum of digits of a number.

(Also called as Digit Root)

Example -

25 = 2 + 5 = 7
123 = 1 + 2 + 3 = 6
45916 = 4+5+9+1+6 = 7 (We need to ignore all 9
and the number that add up on 9)
94563 = 9+4+5+6+3 = 9 (If all digits are adding
up on 9 then keep one 9 and ignore all)

6. “VincUlUm” the number which contains both

positive & negative numbers are called Vinculum.

P a g e 6 | 53

Step 1 Vedic Mathematics Inspiring Education Plus

INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS

Example -

65, 265, 8790 are normal numbers

6(-4), 2(-1)355, (-3)098 are vinculum numbers.

Place value expression of numbers is normal to

vinculum numbers.

1) 78 = 7(10) + 8(1) = 78
2) 1343 = 1(1000) + 3(100) + 4(10) + 3(1) = 1343
3) 1(-2)3 = 1(100) + 2(10) + 3(1)
4) 3(-2)15 = 3(1000) + 2(100) + 1(10) + 5(1) = 3215

5. Conversion of Normal
numbers to Vinculum Numbers

Remember

Rule 1 – If Unit Place is less than keep it as it is. And if

its more then 5 Subtract 10 from it

Rule 2 – If Ten place is less than 5 then add 1 to it else

Subtract 9 from it and continue the process until last
digit.

Example 1 : 26

P a g e 11 | 53

Step 1 Vedic Mathematics Inspiring Education Plus

INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS
Now Unit Place is 6 which is more than 5 so subtract 10
from it (As per Rule no 1)

So 6-10 = (-4)
Immediate left is less than 5 add 1 to it
2+1 = 36
Answer = 3(-4)
Verify using place value expression 3(10)- 4(1) =26
Example 2 = 4624
Unit Place : 4 = Keep it as it is
Tens Place : 2 = Keep it as it is
Hundred Place : 6 = Subtract 10 from it = 6-10 = (-4)
Th. Place : 4 = Add 1 to it = 4 + 1 = 5

Answer : 5(-4)24
Verify: 5(1000)-4(100)+2(10)+4(1) = 5000-400+24 =

Method 2 :

1) If U.P is having negative number, add 10 to it

(else keep it as it is)

2) If next digit T.P is negative number, add 9 to it

(else subtract 1 from it)

3) After subtracting 1 from the normal number add

10 to the previous negative number, in case it
is normal number again then keep it as it is.

4) Continue the process till left most digit.

Example : 6(-2)

13. Addition by Shuddh Method

Shuddh method for calculation list of number like

grocery bills, balance sheet etc.

This is the most easy and accurate method which was

earlier used by our grand parents for calculating. If you
have noticed the local grocery guy (not a shopping mall
or malls). They do some markings on bills while verifying
the bills. This is the method which was purely used by
them.

Lets Understand:

Shuddh means Pure. The pure numbers are the

numbers between 0 to 9 (single digit) as we have
learned in beejank also.
i.e. 0,1,2,3,4,5…9 in Shuddh method of addition we shift
1 to next place same as place wise method
P a g e 36 | 53

Step 1 Vedic Mathematics Inspiring Education Plus

INSPIRING EDUCATION PLUS

Example : Calculate 7 + 8 + 2 + 9

*7 Here we should start adding from down.

+ 8
+ *2
+ 9
------------
26

We need to keep on calculate the digits from U.P from

down to up. Once we reach 10 Then we will make a dot
or a star mark to next digit of T.P and then again start
calculation with more which is left with 10 (For Eg – 9 +
2 is 11 so we have marked star next to 2 & kept 1 of that
11 ) And start calculation again with that left over 1 and
8 so we got 9. Lastly 9 + 7 we got 16 so again we
marked start next to 7 and kept 6. So on U.P we got 6
and 2 stars next to U.P which will be our T.P.
Note : 1 mark represents 1 number. So we got 2 in T.P.

Final Answer of above question is 26

SUBTRACTION

Subtraction is a calculation for finding Net

Difference between given 2 numbers.

The number which the other number is subtracted is

called Minuend. & the number which is subtracted is
called Subtrahend.

A – B = C here A is Minuend, B is Subtrahend. And

C is Net Difference.

In Vedic Mathematics we need to find one more

column between Subtrahend & Net Difference.

14. Subtraction by Shuddh

Method

1. If minuend is greater than the subtrahend, write

the difference as it is in answer line.

2. If minuend is lesser than the subtrahend, add
complement of subtrahend to minuend & write

answer. Put Shuddh sign (*) on subtrahend

number of left higher place. (Simply add 1 to it)

Example : Subtract 28 – 11

2 9 - Minuend
-1 1 - Subtrahend
-------------------------------------
1 8 - Net Difference

You can verify with the beejank method

2+8 = 11 = 2
1+1 = 2 = 2 As its subtraction we will do 2 – 2 = 0
so Beejank is 9
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Beejank of Net Difference = 1 + 8 = 9

Answer of question beejank & Answer beejank is 9

Example 2 : Subtract 82 - 27

8 2 Minuend
- *2 7 Subtrahend
(3) Complement of Subtrahend
------------------------------------------------------------------
5 5 Net Difference

Explanation : as 7 is greater then 2 so complement

of 7 is 3 & put * on next digit which is 2. So our
answer for U.P is 5 (3 + 2) And for T.P its 8 – 3 = 5
Final Answer is 55

We can use this method of 3 , 4 digits also.

Subtract 9235 – 1656

9 2 3 5 Minuend
- *1 *6 *5 6 Subtrahend
(3) (4) (4) Complement of subtrahend

21
30
----------
50
Explanation-
---------- 91 & 21 are positive number
so U.P 1 + 1 = 2 & 32 & 30 are negative so
U.P is (-2) hence 2 positive & 2 negative
became 0 in U.P Answer
And 9 & 2 are positive in T.P which add
up to 11 & 3 & 3 are negative in T. P which
give us 6 so 11 – 6 is 5

So the final answer is 50

Example – 72 -37 + 52 – 19

7 2
3 7
5 2
1 9
8 / 12 =8 – 1 = 7 & (-2) = 68

So the final answer is 68
