This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.
Posttest - This measures how much you have learned from the
entire module.

RECAP
SOLUTIONS:
a. 4x 2 + 12x + 9 Yes, it is perfect square trinomial, both first and last are
perfect squares and the middle term is twice the product of
the quantities that were squared.
2x 2x −3 −3
Middle term: 2(2x)(−3) = 12x
x x −7 −7
Middle term: 2(x)(−7) = −14x
x3 x3 5 5
3 )(5)
Middle term: 2(x = 10x 3
5x 5x 1 1
Middle term: 2(5x)(1) = 10x
Example 2. Factor 𝒉𝟐 − 𝟒𝒉 + 𝟑
Look for two integers whose product is 3 and whose sum is -4. The two integers are -
1 and -3.
ℎ2 − 4ℎ + 3 = (ℎ − 1)(ℎ − 3)
Example 3. Factor 𝒎𝟐 − 𝟐𝒎 − 𝟏𝟓
Look for two integers whose product is −15 and whose sum is −2. The two integers
are −5 and 3.
𝑚2 − 2𝑚 − 15 = (𝑚 − 5)(𝑚 + 3)
Example 4. Factor 𝒋𝟐 + 𝒋 − 𝟐𝟎
Look for two integers whose product is −20 and whose sum is 1. The two integers
are −4 and 5.
𝑗 2 + 𝑗 − 20 = (𝑗 − 4)(𝑗 + 5)
Factoring Trinomials where a > 1 and c either Positive or Negative
Factoring ax2 + bx + c when a > 1: There are 3 applicable methods to use namely;
Guess and Check, Box Method, by Grouping and AC TEST
Study the following:
The integers are 3 and 4. Use these integers to write the middle term,
7𝑥 = 3𝑥 + 4𝑥.
2𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 + 6 = 2𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 4𝑥 + 6
ACTIVITIES
Analyze the given questions. Write your answers on the space provided.
Direction: Determine which of the following polynomials is a perfect square trinomial and
General trinomial. Write the acronym PST(perfect square trinomial) and
GT(General Trinomial).
__________1. 4𝑥 2 − 12𝑥 + 9
__________2. x2 - 7x + 12
__________3. 2𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 + 3
__________4. 100x4 – 20x2 + 1
__________5. 2𝑥 2 − 9𝑥 + 10
ACTIVITY 2: KEEP PRACTICING
Direction: Given the polynomial on the column A, identify the factors of the following
polynomials in column B by writing the letter of the correct answer on the space provided.
Column A Column B
4. Which of the following factors gives the product of (8x – 5)(x + 3)?
A. 8x2 + 23x - 15 C. 8x2 +19x - 15
B. (8x2 +37x - 15 D. 8x2 -19x - 15
5. What is the middle term of the polynomial (49k2 ____+ 4) if the polynomial is a
perfect square?
WRAP–UP
To find the factors of perfect square trinomial, the first and last terms of the polynomials
should be perfect and the middle term will be twice the product of square roots of the 1st and
the last terms..
𝑥 2 + 2xy + 𝑦 2 = ( 𝑥 + 𝑦)(x + y)
𝑥 2 − 2xy + 𝑦 2 = ( 𝑥 − 𝑦)( x − y)
