introduction
The 2014 FIFA World Cup is an exciting journey into the future combined with
massive appreciation of the twists and turns of the event’s great history. Brazil is one
of the most progressive nations of the 21st century yet it is also a country steeped in
football’s great traditions and great deeds. No other nation can boast five victories
in the FIFA World Cup or such an extensive historical armoury of exciting individuals.

Not that the land of the ‘beautiful game’ has always Brazil is a vast nation. As FIFA president

Football Country
Maybe the game’s rhythm struck a chord with the carnival
atmosphere that seems so prevalent in the country, but, for
whatever reason, over the years Brazil has been able to bring its
national personality to the game of football - casual, contented, FIFA WORLD CUP
relaxed and playful - like no other nation on earth. Brasil

Doubt remains as to who can truly be called Brazil’s

but what cannot be questioned is that from the
moment the first ball was kicked in the 1890s,
football’s popularity spread rapidly throughout the
country and soon became interwoven into the very
fabric of Brazilian culture.
Not that success on the global stage was
instantaneous. Brazil travelled across the border
into Uruguary for the inaugural 1930 FIFA World
Cup full of optimism, but a 2-1 opening-game
defeat to Yugoslavia left their dreams of success in
tatters. And things grew no better in Italy, in 1934:
Brazil lost 3-1 to Spain in the first round of what
was at this time a knockout competition.
But then the Samba Boys slowly began
to find their dancing feet. They reached
the semi-finals in 1938, finished second,
as tournament hosts, in 1950 and then
reached the quarter-finals in 1954. Then
came 1958: spearheaded by a youthful Pele,
Brazil marched to the title playing a brand of
football that was admired around the globe.
It served as a blueprint for what would
become one of the most dominant spells in
international football history. Brazil retained
the 1962 FIFA World Cup and won again in
1970; the only blemish came in England in 1966.
In contrast, the 1970 team is widely considered
the best in football history and the team’s

But the manner and style of Brazil’s success
at the 1970 FIFA World Cup became a curse for
future teams: flair became the byword for Brazilian
football and without the players to match their
famous forebears (with the exception the 1982 FIFA
World Cup) success became difficult to repeat.
Glory did not return until the 1994 FIFA World Cup
- and then it was achieved with a less glittering
style of football. Brazil won again in 2002, and
there was a little more artistry than eight years
