PREFACE

Municipal Year Book was prepared for the first time in 1970 by Economic &
Statistical Organisation Punjab. The present document contains very important and
detailed information pertaining to 129 Municipal Committees and 4 Municipal
Corporations of the state for the year 2006-07.The basic information relating to Area
and Population, Vital and Health Statistics, Education and Cultural Statistics, Public
Utilities, Housing and Construction, Transport and Communications, Employment in
Municipalities, No. of Banking Facilities, Veterinary Hospitals, No. of Sports Facilities,
Rest Houses, No. of Diesel/Petrol Filling Stations and Gas Agencies etc. has been
incorporated in it. It is hoped that the administrators, town planners and other official
and non-official agencies engaged in the formulation of urban development plans will
find this issue useful.

by Deputy Economic & Statistical Advisers and other officials at district level.

AN OVER VIEW OF MUNICIPAL STATISTICS - PUNJAB

‘Municipal Statistics - Punjab’ is prepared by Demography Section of this


Organisation. Important data collected from all the Municipal Councils/Corporations of
the State is compiled in this book.
Scope
The statistics relating to all the 133 Municipal Councils/Corporations of Punjab
State for the year 2006-07 have been given in this report. There are 129 Municipal
Councils and 4 Municipal Corporations i.e. Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Patiala.
District-wise and Municipal Councils/Corporations-wise data is given in each table of
this publication.
Process
The information related to this report is collected by the office of Deputy
Economic & Statistical Adviser at district headquarter from the Municipal
Councils/Corporations falling in the jurisdiction of the district as per performae
designed by Central Statistical Organisation, Govt. of India. The compilation of data
and drafting of report is carried out by Demography Section at the Head office,
Chandigarh.
Data related to the Municipal Councils/Corporations is divided in twelve
chapters viz; Area & Population, Vital & Health Statistics, Education and Culture
Statistics, Public Utilities, Housing & Construction, Finances of Municipalities,
Transport and Communications, Employment in Municipalities, Slaughter Houses,
Banking, Veterinary Hospitals, Sports facilities, Rest Houses, Dak Bungalows and
Dharamshalas and Facilities of Petrol/ Diesel Filling Stations and Gas Agencies.

MAIN RESULTS OF THE MUNICIPAL STATISTICS - PUNJAB 2006-07

1. Area and Population


Out of total 50362 sq km geographical area of state, the area within municipal
limits is 1800.82 (3.58 percent) sq km. Out of total area under municipal limits 26.09
percent area is falling under 4 Municipal Corporations. The state is having population
of 7987404 persons living within its municipal limits. Out of which, 43.07 percent
population is living in 4 Municipal Corporations. Population ranking exhibits Ludhiana
(1398467) is at number one, Amritsar (1003917) is at second place followed by
Jalandhar (714077) and Patiala (323884) at third and fourth places.

2. Vital & Health Statistics
A total number of 157 hospitals, 384 dispensaries, 3228 doctors and 13008
beds were recorded in various types of health institutions existing in municipal limits of
the state. Health facility–wise detail is given as under:

Number of registered Live Births, Deaths and Infant’s Death is recorded to the
tune of 243726, 66495, and 2178 respectively in all the municipalities of the state
during the year 2006-07. Deaths due to accidents were recorded as 3449.

3. Education
Education plays a strategic role in Economic development of a country.
Establishment of Educational Institutions in the nearby places is further more
important. From this point of view the number and classification of Institutions,
Teachers and Scholars is given as below:

4. Income and Expenditure

Total income of Rs. 1296.70 crores and expenditure of Rs.1231.17 crores was
recorded for all the Municipalities of the state during the reference period. Financial
status-wise analysis of the Municipalities reveal that Ludhiana district is at first position
with regard to income (Rs.362.48 crores) and expenditure (Rs 336.89 crores) and
Jalandhar district is at second position with respect to its Income (Rs.174.38 crores)
and expenditure (Rs 167.29 crores) and Amritsar district is at third position with
respect to its Income (Rs.117.63 crores) and expenditure (Rs 161.46 crores). District-
