Lesson 3 Activity

Reference: Genki Textbook Lesson 3, page 94

Look at the pictures below and complete the following tasks.

A. Lesson 3 Verb Chart: Which verbs belong to the same group?

〜う 〜る Irregular Verbs
(Group 1) (Group 2) (Group 3)
Ex. きく Ex. たべる Ex. する
1. 1. 1.
2. 2. 2.
3. 3.
4.
5.

B. direct object を verb

We learned during Hiragana days that 「を」marks the direct object. This is seen in phrase or sentences
containing transitive verbs. In this set, pictures / verbs 1 - 7 are referred to as transitive verbs. Write
sentences by adding the direct object to the verbs.

Pattern: direct object を verb

Ex. ハンバーガーをたべます

1. listen to music

2. drink coffee

3. speak Japanese

4. read magazine

5. watch TV

6. play (do) tennis

7. study Japanese Language

C. place で direct object を verb

Let’s add the place to the above sentences. We use 「で」to mark the place where the action happens.
Ex. マクドナルドで ハンバーガーをたべます

1. listen to music at home

2. drink coffee at the cafe

3. speak Japanese at the college

4. read magazine at the library

5. watch TV at home

6. play (do) tennis at school

7. study Japanese Language at the library

D. に exact time expression で place direct object を verb

Let’s add the time element to our sentences. When the time expression is specific or exact such as time,
dates, days of the week, we use the particle 「に」.

Ex. ごじに マクドナルドで ハンバーガーをたべます。

1. listen to music at home at 4:30

2. drink coffee at the café at 3:00

3. speak Japanese at the college everyday

4. read magazine at the library at 2:00

5. watch TV at home tonight

6. play (do) tennis at school on Saturday

7. study Japanese Language at the library on weekend

To state explicitly the subject / topic, we can add ‘Mary’ at the beginning of the sentences. Other
elements of the sentence may be included like companion. Should we want to mention all elements /
items in the sentence, we will follow this WORD ORDER (written) – S T O P Obj VER (STOPOVER):

SUBJECT は TIME に OTHER (COMPANION) と PLACE で OBJECT を VERB

Let’s take #3 as example and let’s try to translate this sentence.

8. Mary speaks Japanese with a friend at the college everyday.

Intransitive verbs (does not take a direct object) will have the same word order BUT will not require an
を element.

S T O P VER (STOPVER):

SUBJECT は TIME に OTHER (COMPANION) と PLACE で VERB

Let’s try these:

9. Mary wakes up at home at 7AM.

10. Mary sleeps with a (her) cat at the hotel(ホテル) at 9PM.
