3. You are taking part in a beach clean-up and discover that you can speak to sea creatures.

What are they saying, and how do you respond?

It was a bright sunny day. The azure coloured early morning sky was filled with famished
seagulls, searching for their breakfast in the vast ocean. The air was filled with the cries of
excited seagulls that had spotted their prey. My friends and I went on a beach clean-up trip to the
beach in Chilaw, which was heavily polluted with materials such as plastic, polythene and
cardboard. The beaches were piled up with stacks of rubbish such as plastic bottles, broken
boats, old fishing nets, polythene bags and plastic cans.

After an hour or so of hard work, we found the dead bodies of some sea creatures, such as
turtles, fish, prawn, cuttlefish and crabs. After investigating, we found that these poor animals
have died after eating plastic or cardboard and also by getting stuck in polythene bags which
makes them choke. Sadly, we understood that it was us humans who have polluted these
magnificent beaches and eye-catching seas.

We soon got hungry. So we enjoyed our scrumptious meals sent by our loving mothers.
Soon after we finished eating, we drank some water and fell asleep. “Click!” “Click!” I woke up
with jump at the sound which was coming closer to my right ear. I blinked at the sight that was
in front of me. I pinched myself to make sure that I wasn’t dreaming.

It was a group of half a dozen beautiful, sparkling crabs, staring at me. “Hello, I’m
Vidula.” I told them. “Hello I’m Jake and these are my friends.” The largest crab replied. I was
surprised that they understood me. “Why did you wake me up?” I asked them. “BECAUSE OF
THE PROBLEMS WE FACE BECAUSE OF YOU HUMANS!” It hollered with anger. “We
have lost a lot of our friends and family members because of the pollutions done by you humans.
Our habitats have been destroyed by your pollutions. The food that we eat, which are usually
other sea creatures such as Queen Scallops, Cowry Snails and Cone snails, have been poisoned
because they have eaten your polluted garbage! Remember that this counts not only for us, but
for every other sea creature that live on this polluted beach!” With that they started stomping off
away from the place we were sleeping.

“HEY! COME BACK!” I screamed at them with all my might, which made them turn
around and stare at me. Also, my friends also woke up at my shout. “I know that we are the
peoples who pollute these beaches. We are the reason that you’ll lose your family members and
close friends. But today, we have tried our best to make up for our reproachable work by
organizing a beach clean-up. We all are very sorry for the damages done to you’ll by us
humans.” I replied. “I know that unlike other humans, you children are very kindhearted. That is
why you’ll have come here today to clean this polluted beach. We thank you’ll for your help.”
Replied the massive crab. “We are very sorry.” We all replied together. “Good bye and please
come on another day.” We waved our hands in farewell at the unhappy creatures. The elegant
crabs bowed their heads in respect for our good work and disappeared under the polluted but soft
sand in the beach.

The sun was already setting down behind the humongous ocean like a ginormous fire
ball. There was no sign of those magical crabs. Millions of birds were flying towards their nests.
As all of us felt very sleepy and exhausted, we got on my father’s jet black van like a pack of
tired-up dogs, and drove home with our hearts heavy with sorrow because of the problems that
all sea creatures face because of us humans.
