ORIGIN

► The origin of the dance is uncertain; However, some

believe that it was created in reaction against colonialism
and the repression of indigenous ideals.
► During the 1500s, dancers were persecuted by Christians
because dance was believed to be a manifestation of dark
magic.
► The artists were considered supaypa guagua – children of
the devil – who refused to dissipate their ancient practices
and made a pact with the devil to obtain such abilities.
► Although the dance is now accepted and practiced in
Christian celebrations, to this day dancers are prohibited
from entering a church while in costume.
GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION
► In many places in Peru the scissors dance is carried out; However, there
are two departments that stand out among the others: the dancers from
Ayacucho and Huancavelica lead the competitions of this ancestral
dance.
► In both departments is where you can witness the best performances of
this Andean dance. In Huancavelica , the Scissors Dance Day is
celebrated every December 27.
► On that date, extraordinary presentations of scissor dances are held,
where the dancers exhibit their agility, skill and creativity in each
demonstration.
► Each region of Peru brings its best dancers to Huancavelica, where they
will compete on the stage of the San Francisco Church.
OUTFIT
► Scissor dancers in the highlands of south-central Peru
wear brightly colored outfits.
► Their wide pants and fitted jackets are richly decorated
with metallic embroidery, gold and silver fringes, and
colorful sequins and beads.
► Their large hats are often decorated with tassels and
feathers, and sometimes with ribbons.

► The dancers themselves design the

costumes that can weigh up to 15 kilos and
embroider their spiritual names and various elements
of nature on the fabric.
► Wearing a glove on their left hand, scissor dancers
wield their polished iron rods, which represent
scissors, in their right hand.
► As they perform demanding acrobatic jumps, they
bang the rods against each other, following the rhythm
set by the accompanying violins and harps.

DANCE PROCESS
► Accompanied by a violinist and harpist, the dancer forms a
quadrilla, or team, to represent his community in a duel.
► Two or more crews compete through a series of acrobatics,
step dancing , aerial jumps and choreographed movements
in sync with the musicians, all while clacking oversized
scissors in their hands.
► During the scissors dance, the dancers not only compete
with their acrobatic movements, but also with danger: they
eat glass, walk on fire, pierce their tongues, faces and
mouths with large needles or stick wires into their bodies.
► The competition, which can last up to 10 hours, evaluates
the physical ability, quality of instruments and experience of
the artists to determine the winner.
► Because the rhythm and tempo of the music constantly
change, no two dances are identical and a particular
performance by a dancer can never be repeated.
CULTURAL HERITAGE OF THE
HUMANITY

► After the Catholic Church failed to eradicate indigenous

Andean beliefs, it accepted the integration of these practices
into colonial society on the condition that dancers participate in
the Catholic calendar.
► In the late 1960s, dance became one of the most significant
and representative artistic symbols of the cultural heritage of
the Peruvian Andes.
► In 2010, UNESCO added it to the List of Intangible Cultural
Heritage of Humanity due to the physical and spiritual
knowledge that is transmitted orally from generation to
generation through the dancers.
► In 2017, November 16 was declared National Scissor Dance
Day.
