Summary
Due to a rare condition, Taehyung’s end of the red string of fate is tied around his neck,
while his soulmate's, Jungkook, is tied around his finger, like it’s supposed to be.
Theory says that if they "sleep" with someone that isn’t their soulmate, the string tightens
on the other end, letting your soulmate know exactly what you are doing.
When Jungkook feels his string tightening, he feels heartbroken, and starts sleeping around
with everybody as revenge, not knowing Taehyung was a victim of sexual abuse.
or -
Love and fate's hopes for humanity were way too high and all they got was disappointment.
Notes
Soulmates are attached by an invisible red string. Wherever they go, even if they’re far away from
each other, the string never breaks. It’s connecting their souls together.
Most people have their strings wrapped around their fingers, their pinkies to be exact. It’s common
knowledge, learned on biology class. Another part of the body to study about.
You can only see your own string once in a lifetime: it happens when you and your soulmate
realize you’ve found each other for the very first time.
On extremely rare cases, the person is born with the string wrapped around their neck instead of
their finger. Reportedly, it only happened a couple of dozen times in the history of humanity.
People who are born with a neck string are considered weak by society, because while others
would only feel a pressure on their fingers if their soulmates were with someone else, they
suffocated. While others would only feel their fingers burning if their soulmates were to die, they
could die too from the burn in their throats.
Chapter One
Chapter Notes
When you meet your soulmate, you have to be lucky to notice it at first sight.
Jungkook always thought he would be one of the lucky ones. He's always heard from his parents
about how magical it was for them; they had just met each other, and the first time their eyes met,
both could see their red string for the first time ever, wrapped tightly around each their fingers.
Jungkook spent all his childhood dreaming about how his soulmate would look like, how they
were, what they might be doing. He fell asleep while staring at his smallest finger countless times,
wishing he could see the string he couldn't feel around it, but knew was there.
Two of Jungkook's classmates, for example, who have known each other since kinder garden, only
found out they were soulmates weeks ago. They said they looked at each other one day and it was
like they were seeing each other for the first time, then the string turned visible to their eyes. They
were always inseparable. This just made them realize that they loved each other more than they
thought.
Jungkook understood that. Sometimes love takes time. Sometimes souls need time to know each
other before they give in to their fated love, unlike others that already come from so many lifetimes
of sharing the same love, like his parents'.
Despite all of his dreams and hopes for a future filled with love with someone he couldn't wait to
meet, everything ended in a blink of an eye.
Jungkook had always been told, in school, by his parents, by everyone, that you're not supposed to
sleep with anyone but your soulmate.
"If you ever sleep with someone else, your soulmate will feel your string tightening around their
finger, more and more every time you do." they told him. "Same goes the other way around."
He thought it was so silly that people even had to say that, because why would anyone want to be
with a person they're not supposed to be with? But he learned the worst way that it's actually very
common.
It happened when he was seventeen. He was home alone, s tudying on his bedroom, when he
felt an uncomfortable pressure on his finger. He thought some bug had bitten him. Or that he had
stuck it on something. But he looked, and there was nothing. The pressure kept growing and
growing to the point where it started to hurt, leaving a ring shaped purple bruise, and Jungkook's
eyes filled with tears as realization hit him. It was his string. His soulmate was with someone else.
He cried himself to sleep that night, as everything he ever believed in came crashing down on him
all at once, to a point where he didn't even know who he was anymore.
Now, Jungkook is in his first year of college. The only time he ever thinks about his soulmate
anymore is at nights like these, when he's in someone else's bed, between kisses and moans, hoping
their string is letting the other know exactly what he's doing, making them suffer as much as it
made him on that night.
Taehyung looks around the halls, searching for the room where his first class will be. He’s excited.
He never thought he would ever get into college, but he always dreamed of it. He adjusts his scarf
and sighs as he reaches what seems to be the right door. He was told a boy is going to meet him
after, to show him around and explain some stuff. He hopes he’s nice.
“Hi! Are you new?” A girl approaches him. He nods shyly at her.
“Nice to meet you, I’m June. My class is here too. You can sit with me if you want.” She smiles at
him as he opens the door, making way in for both of them. Taehyung bows at her and smiles back
behind his facemask.
“Thank you. I’m Taehyung.”
He follows her and sits beside her, making sure to adjust his scarf again. He feels his phone
vibrating on his bag and takes it quickly, before the class starts.
It’s Namjoon.

Jungkook finally manages to get to his class. He's late for the third time this week. The teacher
frowns at him and rushes him inside, annoyed for being interrupted by the same boy yet again.
He feels like trash and just wants to be able to go home and sleep. Last night was fun but also
tiring. At least the guy agreed on giving him a ride to college, or else he wouldn't have gotten here.
The bell finally rings after what seems like ages and all students hurry outside, ignoring the
teacher's homework assignments, hoping they can get something decent to eat for lunch.
Jungkook stretches his arms and yawns, lazily walking out the classroom as well. He sees Jimin
standing in the hall talking with some people.
"Morning, hyung." he says. "Took care of the sick guy already?" Jimin stares at him in disbelief,
and the way he glares at him tells Jungkook he might've said something wrong.
He looks beside him and sees the boy who Jimin has been tutoring, (his name is Yoongi if he can
remember correctly), and some other guy he's never seen before. He mentally slaps himself. This
must be the new guy.
"Fuck. I'm sorry." He panics, "I was just joking with Jimin. I mean, I know you're not sick.- well, I
know you're sick, but... Uh... I- I was just angry at him cause he ditched me for you. And-"
Jungkook rambles and the three boys stare at him as he tries to explain himself.
"Idiot." Yoongi scoffs. "See you later, Jimin. Bye." He leaves, waving at the stranger as well. Jimin
sighs, still not sure how to handle the situation. "Jeon Jungkook!" He yells, grabbing the younger
by his shirt.
"N-no! It's okay! I know he didn't mean it in a bad way." The new boy sounds nervous, his voice
muffled by the facemask he's wearing. Jungkook thinks his voice is nice; his tone is deep but soft
at the same time. "I don't mind. I promise."
Jungkook knows the other is smiling at him under his facemask now. He can tell by how his eyes
are slightly squinted.
"I can't argue with that." Jungkook laughs nervously. "I'm Jungkook. Nice to meet you." He lifts
his hand for the other to shake, ignoring his friend's angry stare.
The boy takes a little too long until he finally lifts his own hand to meet Jungkook's, and shakes it,
bowing to the other as well. "Nice to meet you too, Jungkook-ssi. I'm Kim Taehyung."
Taehyung's hand is cold and his grip on Jungkook's hand is so light that he younger almost can't
feel it. His skin still feels soft, though, Jungkook thinks. He notices him smiling again and smiles
back. He wonders how his smile must look like.
"Okay. We have to go now." Jimin kindly interrupts their introduction, pulling Taehyung by his
shoulder. "Talk to you later, jerk." he rolls his eyes at Jungkook. Taehyung bows at him again and
leaves with Jimin.
Jungkook watches as they disappear between the other students, the entire situation that just
occurred burning inside his head, making him cringe harder by the second.
Taehyung seems nice. He dresses kind of weird, with the scarf and the mask and all that, but that
probably has something to do with his sickness. Jungkook wonders what it might be. Not that he
cares - he's just curious.
Jimin guides Taehyung down the hallway to his next class. "I'm sorry about jungkook. He's kind of
an idiot." He sighs, sadly. "Never thinks before he speaks."
"It's okay." Taehyung smiles with his eyes, not bothering to look at him. Jimin can't help but be
surprised by the other's indifference. It's almost as if he doesn't care what others say about him.
Which can only mean he's either too confident, or too tired.
"Here's your class." Jimin smiles politely. "I have lunch now, it's a shame we don't have lunch
together, but I promise I'll be here as soon as your class is over to take you to the next one."
"Thank you." Taehyung smiles back and bows, entering the classroom right after.
Jimin gets to the caffeteria and sits down at the table next to Jungkook and Hoseok. "Where's the
new guy?" Jungkook asks, focused on opening his soda can. "Thankfully not near enough for you
to offend him again." Jimin shoots him a glare. Jungkook rolls his eyes.
"I already apologized, hyung." He says, taking a bite of his sandwich. "Did you find out what's
wrong with him?" Jimin stares at him incredulously. Sometimes he finds it hard to remember why
he's still friends with him. He's about to answer when a girl approaches their table.
"Hi, boys." She smiles. Jimin recognizes her from his literature class, but can't remember her
name. "So sorry to interrupt." the girl smiles as she slowly places a hand on Jungkook's shoulder.
They exchange looks and as if something clicks on Jungkook's head, he gets up.
"Uhm, I'll be right back." He smiles that cheeky smile that both Jimin and Hoseok know exactly
what means by now, and goes hand in hand with the girl towards the bathroom area. Jimin roll his
eyes, Hoseok just sighs tiredly, going back to reading his book.
Taehyung can honestly say the day is turning out to be a lot better than he expected. He's still on
biology class, and his teacher is the sweetest old lady he's ever met. She reminds him of his
grandmother. Some students came to say hi to him, and everyone seemed so polite.
A girl even offered to share her book with him, since Taehyung's haven't arrived yet. Everything is
going great. Taehyung almost let's himself hope that things will actually be better here. That he has
a chance. Almost.
He can't help but start coughing desperately, his hands on his neck furiously trying to pull off a
string that couldn't be pulled off, his air starting to fade more and more at every attempt of
breathing. He anxiously takes off his scarf, hoping it will make a difference but knowing it won’t.
He starts crying as he notices everyone standing up around him.
He closes his eyes and gives in to the lack of oxygen, passing out right after. People stand there
looking at his unconscious figure, on the floor, with a growing red bruise taking over his now
exposed neck.
Jimin pants as he hurries towards his classroom. His test starts in less than ten minutes and he still
wants to go over a few notes to make sure he knows everything. He curses under his breath
remembering the time he wasted at lunch, eating and talking to Hoseok.
“Jimin-ssi!” He turns around to the breathless girl, startled, looking at her anxiously waiting for her
to say something.
“What’s wrong?”
“I’m sorry! The teacher asked me to search for you!” She explains. “The- The new guy…
Taehyung-ssi? He just passed out.”
Shit.
“I’m not sure, it happened out of nowhere.” She breathes out. “It was so scary. Teacher asked me to
get you, because the principle wants to hear from you, as you were supervising him.”
“Oh god. Thank you for letting me know, I’ll figure something out, tell the teacher to keep him
company at the nursery until me or someone else gets there, please?”
Jimin bites his lips nervously. He cannot miss this test. But he can’t leave the poor guy alone
either.
He sighs, knowing Hoseok will also be taking a test this period. He can only ask for Jungkook to
help him.
Taehyung wakes up with a dizzying headache that hits him as soon as he opens his eyes. It takes
him a minute to remember what happened and realize where he is. He stares at the ceiling, feeling
too tired to move.
Why did this have to happen? Why does his soulmate keep doing this to him? He's tired of
questioning it. He has come to the conclusion that he deserves it. He deserves that the person who
was meant to love him more than anyone else ended up hating him. Before they even met.
These thoughts keep haunting him and he sighs heavily, regretting it immediately, because he’s
really not in condition to do that, his lungs not yet recovered, and he starts coughing.
Taehyung manages to lift his head to see who was talking to him, and he sees the boy he met
earlier, Jimin's friend, anxiously shoving an oxygen mask on his face.
He hurriedly takes the mask and adjusts it on his mouth. He closes his eyes as he feels his breath
slowly getting back to normal.
Jungkook stands beside him, watching closely, ready to help if the boy needed, even though he
doubts he would be of any help.
Once he starts feeling better, Taehyung puts the mask aside, relieved, and clears his throat. "T-
Thank you." He smiles nervously at the boy still next to him, feeling sorry he had to see such a
scene.
Jungkook lets out a heavy breath as if he's been waiting for the other to say something.
"You scared me there." He laughs nervously, sitting down on a chair next to the other's bed. "Are
you feeling better? Sure you don't need more of this?"
"I'm fine now." He says, his voice still hoarse. "Sorry I scared you." Jungkook still looks worried,
but sits back down.
“Aren’t you feeling suffocated with that scarf?” Jungkook points at the fabric loosely wrapped
around the other’s neck I asked the nurse why she put it on you and she said it was because you
might be cold.” Jungkook looks at him and Taehyung mentally thanks the nurse. He doesn’t need
anyone seeing his ugly bruised skin, especially someone he barely just met.
"Oh, you're probably wondering what I'm doing here." Jungkook starts suddenly, as if he was
reading Taehyung's mind, and that startles him a little.
"Jimin had a test so he couldn't come,” He continues, “And as he was in charge of supervising you
on your first day, the principle wanted to hear from him what happened. So he asked me to come."
"Thank you for coming. Sorry you're missing class." Taehyung looks away.
Jungkook lets out a breathy laugh, which surprises the other. "You shouldn't feel sorry. I don’t. I
like it here better than the classroom."
Taehyung looks at him, puzzled. Why would he like a nursery room better than a classroom? "O-
Oh? Okay."
The other just smiles. "So, Kim Taehyung. That's your name, right?"
"And you're Jungkook." Taehyung smiles weakly, adjusting his body on the bed in a way he can
look at the other better.
"You remember!" Jungkook smiles. Taehyung thinks his smile is weird. He's never seen anyone
smile so wide and easily before. It almost looks fake. Like it’s hiding something.
"We just met, of course I remember." He laughs quietly at the other, careful not to overuse his
lungs again.
"Right..." Jungkook scratches the back of his head awkwardly, and the position he's in now makes
a lipstick mark on the side of his neck very visible to Taehyung.
"N-Nothing!" Taehyung shakes his head, blushing. "I'm sorry. It's just... Uhm..." He clears his
throat.
"Oh!" Jungkook chuckles, starting to rub his neck with his fingers in an attempt to get the mark off.
"Thanks for letting me know. If the principle saw this, I'd be in trouble." He smiles, embarrassed.
Taehyung can’t help but keep staring. Jungkook is so lucky to have already found his soulmate.
She's probably beautiful and loves him with all her heart, and can't help but kiss him all the time.
Taehyung bites his lip nervously. "H-How is she like?" He asks, barely whispering.
Jungkook feels his heart getting heavy on his chest. For some reason, the idea of telling Taehyung
that the lipstick mark isn't from his soulmate makes him nauseous. He doesn't want him to think of
him as the awful person he is.
"So, Taehyung." He clears his throat, getting up. "I'm gonna talk to the principle. Tell him you're
awake. Wait here, okay?"
Taehyung keeps his smile on and nods, watching as the boy leaves the room. He feels so much
better now. It wasn't such a bad first day after all, if he got to meet someone as lucky as Jungkook.
He can't wait to know more about him and his soulmate. He focuses on that instead of the burning
pain he feels around his neck.
But Taehyung can’t help but feel jealous of this kind of luck.
He remembers when he was little and he would look out his bedroom window, watching people
passing by holding hands, and he would think about his future, about how his soulmate would hold
his. If they would hold his hands tightly, like they were afraid of letting him go. Or if they would
do it delicately, as if he could break.
But of course these daydreams didn't last. They just left a bitter taste on his mouth and an
unbearable pain inside his chest, always heavy with the thought of what it could be. He shakes his
head, trying to get these thoughts away.
He doesn't want to think about when it all went wrong. It's too painful. The moment still seems
fresh on his memory, ready to come back to the surface at any moment, and sometimes it takes all
he has to stop it.
"So!" the boy smiles. "The principle said you should go home and rest for the day."
"Uh… Do you have anyone that can come pick you up?" Jungkook asks awkwardly, not sure how
to interpret the other's silence.
Taehyung furrows his eyebrows, thinking for a second. He supposes Namjoon can come but he'll
probably take a while to get here. He clears his throat. "Yes. I'll call a friend of mine." He smiles.
"Good." Jungkook smiles. "Get ready, then. I'll help you with your stuff."

He sighs. How can his best friend have so little faith in him? Well. He guesses he can't really blame
him. He replies.

"Alright. thanks, hyungie." Taehyung hangs up the phone smiling, greatful for having a friend like
Namjoon. He doesn't notice Jungkook staring at him.
"So?" The younger clears his throat, "Is your friend picking you up?"
"Yeah! He's on his way." He nods and smiles at him behind the mask.
"Good." Jungkook smiles back. Must be someone special, to just drop everything for Taehyung. Or
maybe Taehyung is the special one, he reflects.
"Thank you for being here with me." Taehyung tells him shyly, staring at the ground. "But I really
don't mind waiting alone. If you have somewhere else to be."
Jungkook stops to watch the boy in front of him for a moment. He looks tired, dark circles around
his eyes and his hair is a mess. His face is almost entirely hiding behind the facemask he put on
and the scarf that covers his neck as well. And he still looks beautiful.
He shakes his head, thinking he must be getting sleepy, because he never thought that way about
someone. He usually just thinks about how attractive they are, and whether or not they're worth
spending a night with - but he never stops to notice if they're beautiful.
"I-It's okay. I don't mind." He looks away, a lump forming on his throat. "Besides, like I told you,
it's better than class." he forces a laugh.
Taehyung laughs as well, giggles actually, and Jungkook makes it his goal to hear more of it.
"Namjoonie hyung, thanks for coming." Taehyung smiles wide and gets up, the other getting closer
and taking him on a hug.
"Of course, Tae." Namjoon smiles kindly and caresses Taehyung's hair. He looks up and sees
Jungkook, staring at them.
“Hi! I'm Jungkook." The younger says as soon as he notices the other looking, waving his hand.
"Nice to meet you."
"Uh..." he coughs. "Thanks again. For being with me through all this." He gives him his best mask
covered smile, happy to have met someone so kind.
"Don't worry." Jungkook smiles, a sweet honest smile now; Taehyung likes this smile better. "I'll
see you tomorrow?"
Taehyung nods and waves at him. Namjoon bows again, and both of them leave.
Jungkook stands there watching the boy until he's out of sight. He sighs and shakes his head,
forcing himself to get to class before he starts thinking too much.

Chapter Three
Chapter Notes
Class is finally over and Jungkook is as bored as ever. He just wants to go home and sleep the
entire afternoon away, but just thinking about having to walk all the way to his dorm makes him
want to cry.
He considers texting the guy who gave him a ride to campus. But it probably won’t be for free if he
agrees to drive Jungkook back home too, and he isn’t really in the mood for that today.
He wonders if Jimin could help him. That way he could ask him if he has any news about
Taehyung, too. Not that it matters, anyway, Jungkook is just curious.
He shakes his head, telling himself to stay focused, and opens his texts to search for Jimin's name.

"You can wait here if you want." Jimin tells him, taking the pile of books on the backseat and
shoving it on Jungkook's hands.
"As if you can carry all these alone." He rolls his eyes. "Why does he have so much homework
anyway?"
Jimin shrugs and starts walking towards Taehyung's house, the other following behind.
"It's not all homework, I got him some used books for his classes. I heard he doesn't have all of
them yet."
Jungkook hums in response, his attention now on the house they're heading to. It's a nice house.
Not too big, but definitely not small. There's a small garden on the front that looks like someone
has poured a lot of time and love into. Jungkook especially likes the red roses.
"Hello! Is Taehyung-ssi home?" Jimin asks, his charming smile already showing. The woman
nods, opening the door wider, inviting them in.
"You must be Jimin, right? From school." She asks as the boys follow her inside. “Taehyung told
me about you.”
"Yes. I'm here to leave today's homework for him." Jimin points at the books on Jungkook's hands
and the younger smiles awkwardly.
"Thank you, that's very kind. You can leave them by the table." She smiles, guiding them towards
the center of the living room. "You can wait here. I'll go tell him you're here."
Jimin bows, thanking her, and Jungkook drops the books on the small table with an exaggerated
sigh.
Jimin glares at him but he ignores it, focused on shaking his now numb arms in a dramatic way.
"Should've locked you inside the car, I swear. Next time I'll handcuff you or something." Jimin
whispers angrily, organizing the books dropped on the table.
"Thanks but I'm not into that kinky shit." Jungkook grins, not worrying about the volume of his
voice, and Jimin widens his eyes, slapping his arm, which only makes him laugh.
"He's here!" The woman interrupts them, entering the room with Taehyung behind her. "I'll go
make you boys some tea." She smiles and excuses herself out.
Taehyung is wearing an oversized hoodie and tight jeans, and he has no mask on now. He smiles
when he sees the two boys and Jungkook can't help but stare at his perfect box-shaped smile, so
different from the tired weak one he gave him when he woke up at the hospital.
"Thank you for coming." Taehyung says, looking at Jimin. "You didn't have to."
"No worries. I brought you some books as well!" The short one answers excitedly. "I hope you're
feeling better?"
"Oh..." Taehyung looks down, "Yes, i'm better. Sorry if I worried you." He smiles weakly.
Jungkook stares at him, puzzled. He has no idea what kind of sickness the other has. Sometimes he
looks fine - even though he looks a bit tired he still smiles - but other times, he can't even breathe
properly. It's confusing.
"Which one of you boys could help me bring the cups and sugar?" She smiles, putting the kettle on
the center table in front of them.
Jungkook feels bad. As if he shouldn't have seen the woman's mark. He's only seen a mark like that
once before, with a guy he slept with a while ago. Other than that, he's only heard about it.
When your soulmate is about to die way before you do, you feel the string burning around your
finger. It burns and burns until, when they die, it leaves a gray mark as if the string burned out on
your skin.
He wonders how long has it been since Taehyung's father passed away. He wonders if he should
say something.
"Uh..." He clears his throat, finding courage to look at the other. "Sorry about your dad."
Taehyung looks up at him, furrowing his eyebrows. "Oh. you saw it, huh..."
"It's okay." Taehyung shakes his head and smiles softly. "Everyone dies, anyway."
The way he says it makes Jungkook feel a knot forming inside his chest. How come such a young
boy is in such good terms with the idea of death? Especially after losing someone. It scares
Jungkook to even consider what made the other start thinking like this.
"Yeah? Sorry." He shakes his head. "Uh... Anyway. You really feel better right?" He asks, not
knowing why his voice sounds like it's breaking out of a sudden.
"Yes.” Taehyung smiles, soft and warm and in a way it makes Jungkook feel something he can't
quite name yet. “Don’t worry about me. And thank you... you know, for being with me. I don't
really like waking up alone after I pass out." Taehyung feels his face heating up with shame of his
own confession. "It's... kind of scary, I guess."
Jungkook stares at him, wondering how many times he had passed out in his life to come to this
conclusion. He swallows dry.
"I promise I'll be there when you wake up from now on." Jungkook says sincerely, not even sure
where it came from, not sure if he's saying it out loud, but absolutely sure that he meant it. And the
way Taehyung looks surprised but smiles anyway scares him even more.
"Sorry it took us so long! Jimin was showing me how to make these really good chocolate
cookies." Taehyung's mother comes back smiling, Jimin laughing behind her. "Absolutely
delicious!"
They put the cups on the table. But jungkook feels weird now and he can't even explain to himself
why.
He just knows he has to leave. Has to go out and definitely has to get drunk, maybe hook up with
someone, get his mind out of things.
"I just remembered I have somewhere to be!" He gets up. "Sorry Mrs. Kim. I'll be back for tea
some other time."
Everyone smiles and waves him goodbye, except for Jimin who glares at him, probably thinking
he's being rude, but he doesn't notice, eyes glued on taehyung and his smile even as he walks away
and leaves.
He exits the house in a hurry, heart still beating faster than he could understand why.
He gets in the car and starts it, thanking his friend for leaving the keys.
6:10 PM
"Hey, Gukk-ah!" Didn’t expect to see you here again so soon.” The man with the leather jacket
smiles, raising his glass.
"You sure know where to look for it!" The man laughs, patting the younger’s shoulder and
ordering two more drinks.
9:35 PM
Jungkook doesn't know where he is. He knows he's drunk, he can tell from the familiar dizziness
on his head. He probably just had sex, too. His body hurts and he smells of sweat and he can hear
someone breathing right beside him. He takes in a long breath, head starting to hurt.
He gets up and squints his eyes, reaching the walls to find his way to the bathroom - if there is one.
Eventually he finds it. He groans when he turns the light on and washes his face as his eyes adjust
to the sudden brightness. He stares at himself through the mirror.
Something doesn't feel right. Jungkook doesn't feel good, or pleased, or satisfied, or anything he
usually feels after a night like the one he apparently just had. He just feels empty. And the thought
of a certain someone is still present on his mind. All of this was useless.
He gets back to the bedroom and lays back on the stranger's bed, deciding that if he sleeps maybe
he'll feel better.
"Turn that shit off." The half naked man on the bed mutters, not bothering to open his eyes.
Jungkook hurries and finds his phone.
It’s Jimin.
hyung hyung2
He sighs. He already pissed off his friend, there's no use in trying to fix things now. He sees the
time on his phone, it's almost ten already. He lays back down. Tomorrow he'll give the car back.
"Gonna spend the night, babe?" He feels the man getting closer.
The stranger starts hugging him from behind, leaving messy kisses on his ear and neck.
"Yeah." The man turns him over and starts kissing him, wanting more.
Jungkook closes his eyes and decides it's better to get it over it.
When the man is done, Jungkook turns away and closes his eyes again, feeling too tired to move,
ignoring the urge to get away from there.
He lets out a heavy sigh when he sees Jimin's name on the screen for the second time that night.
car1 car2
Jungkook gets up, kicking the blankets out. He hears the man complaining about something but he
can't focus on what he's saying. He puts on his jeans and a shirt that he finds on the floor and runs
out of the room.
He is shaking, not sure if it's from the cold wind hitting his face. He texts Jimin saying he should
wait for him on Taehyung's house, cause he's heading there. He's coming with them to the ER.
there you go! i was gonna post this one last night but i ended up falling asleep ghjs
sorry

They get to the hospital and Taehyung is immediately took to a room with an oxygen tank. He's
still passed out but he looks like he's sleeping, and Jungkook still feels like he's the one who can't
breathe.
The doctor who admitted him enters the waiting room and Taehyung's mom gets up. Jimin and
Jungkook sit beside each other anxiously waiting for him to say something.
"He's stable. He will wake up in a couple of hours." The man speaks. All three sigh in unison,
relieved.
"Though I need to say, Mrs. Kim, we should start considering keeping him on the hospital. You
said his attacks are getting more frequent now and here we have the equipment to use when it
happens, which can prevent him from passing out."
Mrs. Kim just nods, unable to answer between her sobs. Jimin gets up and hugs her.
"C-Can I wait for him to wake up? In his room?" Jungkook asks out of nowhere.
The doctor stares at him up and down, probably noticing what a mess he was.
"Why don't you go home? Take a shower. He'll probably be awake when you come b-"
"No!" Jungkook interrupts him. "Sorry. No. Please, let me stay. I promise to leave as soon as he
wakes up. Just, please." Jungkook pleads anxiously.
The doctor sighs, but nods. "Room 107."
Jungkook bows, thankful, and hurries through the corridors until he finds the right room.
He enters.
Taehyung is laying there, oxygen mask on his face, and he looks so weak.
He feels his heart shattering. He doesn't understand why he feels so attached to, so protective over
a boy he barely met.
It's as if they're connected somehow, in a way Jungkook has never felt before. He sits beside
Taehyung's bed, not taking his eyes away. He focuses on how his eyelashes are long, resting on his
now pale cheeks. How his hair falls on his forehead, almost covering his eyebrows.
Every single detail is somehow beautiful in Jungkook's eyes. He stares at his fingers, and can't help
but reach out to them. They're cold. He holds them, his thumb caressing the other's hand.
"I'm here, Tae." He whispers, the new nickname falling easily out of his mouth as he stares at their
hands.
"J-Jungkook?" He hears a voice, small and muffled due to the mask. Taehyung is awake.
Taehyung still looks tired, barely able to keep his eyes open, small smile still rested on his face.
Jungkook passes a hand through the other's hair, so delicately the other can barely feel it.
"You should too." Taehyung struggles his words out, breathing heavily in between them. "Y’look
tired."
"I will." The younger assures him. "Now, try to sleep a little bit more, okay?"
Taehyung nods weakly and closes his eyes, still smiling, and Jungkook can't help but lean in to kiss
his forehead.
His heart races. He notices a purple mark across the other's neck.
He feels dizzy. Has Taehyung tried to...? No. Can't be. He sits back down and holds his hand
again.
Jungkook waits until he's sure Taehyung is asleep and carefully let’s go of his hand, placing it
softly on the mattress. He gets up and walks on his tiptoes towards the door on the corner of the
room.
He enters the small bathroom and locks the door, slow movements, careful not to wake Taehyung
and not to get caught by the doctor who already told him he should go home.
He swallows dry when he looks at himself in the mirror. He looks like shit. He feels like it, too.
He washes his face and tries to ignore the growing nausea on his stomach as he gets more and
more sober and aware of the smell of alcohol and smoke impregnated on his stained shirt. It
disgusts him. He's disgusted with himself.
What would've happened if he was too drunk to answer Jimin? Or if he was too far to get to
Taehyung's house in time? He wasn't even supposed to be with Jimin's car in the first place.
Jungkook feels like the universe knows all of his thoughts and is setting a trap that makes him go
to what he’s been trying to escape the most: Taehyung.
And he doesn't deserve that. God, if there's someone who doesn't deserve suffering, it's this boy
who he barely met, who can still show such a sweet smile even though it's no secret he's been
through so much pain.
Jungkook dries his face with a paper towel and stares at himself in the mirror again. He hates what
he sees. He hates what he has become. And even if he doesn't understand why, he can't stomach
the thought of showing Taehyung this version of himself.
That's why he lied to him when Taehyung asked about his soulmate, that's why he couldn't tell to
his face that to him everything was a joke and love isn't real anymore. That's why he goes out of
his way to make him think he's nice, even though they’ve barely met and he doesn't care what
everyone else thinks.
Maybe he could still see something in Taehyung's eyes that were similar to what he had on his own
once before. It was faded, but it was there. A small spark that told Jungkook that the other still
believed in love, happiness, hope, and all the things he had lost long ago.
And Jungkook wouldn't - No, he could not be the one to swallow that spark with his overwhelming
darkness. He takes a deep breath, making a decision, right there, keeping eye contact with his own
reflection. He will never hurt Taehyung. The rest of the world did it enough.
He leaves the bathroom just in time for the doctor to knock lightly on the door and partly open it,
signaling Jungkook to come outside. He glances at Taehyung's sleeping figure one more time. He
looks so peaceful. Doesn't even move. Jungkook smiles, quietly leaving the room.
The doctor is waiting for him in the hallway, Mrs. Kim and Jimin also there.
Suddenly he feels uncomfortable. He has no idea how to deal with this situation. Should he smile
sympathetically and pat her back?
He makes a joke out of every situation not to show real emotion, it's his way of protecting himself
from people. He didn't need others to know him in such emotional level. Because he didn't want to
have to know them too.
But he spent so much time hiding, that now, when he wishes he could show Taehyung's mom what
he's feeling, show that, for reasons he’s still trying to figure out himself, he cares for her son and
he's also afraid, he doesn't know how to do it.
"H-He was awake for a few minutes. But he fell back asleep."
Mrs. Kim keeps looking at him, waiting for him to say more. "And... Uh… He looked tired. And
he had this bruise-" Jungkook shakes his own head once he realizes where his mind is going. He
doesn't want to remember the angry purple bruise he saw on the other's delicate skin.
"But he was smiling!" Jungkook says, more to himself, cutting his own thoughts. "He's gonna be
okay..." He looks down.
Mrs. Kim wipes her eyes with a tissue, Jimin rubbing her shoulders and staring at Jungkook with a
puzzled expression.
"W-Won't he?" He asks, small voice, looking up at the doctor.
The doctor sighs and clears his throat, turning to face Mrs. Kim.
"That's what I wanted to talk to you about, Mrs." He adjusts his glasses and starts reading some
paper files he's been carrying. "You said his episodes are getting more frequent these days, yes?"
"Yes." she replies, calming down. "Now he has them every day, sometimes twice a day, mostly at
night. He had a coughing fit earlier today but I put him on oxygen and he was better. But then a
few hours later it started again and I couldn’t- I couldn’t help."
"Right. What I recommend is that we keep him under observation for two nights, and see if he has
any episodes."
"Yes. Starting tomorrow. We'll see how he does in that period, so then we can proceed to consider
a permanent admission of him in the hospital." the doctor's calm tone isn't enough to make Mrs.
Kim less nervous, as the woman starts crying again.
She nods weakly and the doctor excuses himself, smiling apologetically.
"The doctor said we have to leave." Jimin explains to her gently. "He's not gonna wake up until
tomorrow, anyway."
Mrs. Kim takes a deep breath, and wipes her tears with the back of her hands.
"Yes. You're right." she sighs, staring at Jimin. "God, it's just so unfair. He's all I have." She sniffs.
Jungkook swallows dry. He feels like he's watching the entire thing from a closed window ever
since the doctor said Taehyung might have to stay in this cold, lifeless hospital forever. He feels
like he's inside a nightmare just from thinking about it.
Jungkook finds the way she hopelessly shakes her head terrifying.
"Kook, you're coming?" Jimin asks him, snapping him out of his thoughts.
He knows he has to leave, but the thought of Taehyung waking up alone makes his chest hurt.
“Just a minute. I'll be right back." Jimin looks unsure, but goes with Mrs. Kim to wait for him
outside.
Jungkook goes back inside the room where Taehyung is, the boy still sound asleep. He gets closer,
smiling, and softly pushes the other's fringe away from his forehead. He looks beautiful. Jungkook
doesn't understand how he always does.
He looks around and sees a small open notebook and a pen beside his bed, probably used by nurses
to write down notes. He takes it and thinks about what to write. He looks at Taehyung.
He wishes he was better with his words. He never thought that one day he would want to say
something with meaning to someone.
But Taehyung is in front of him and he looks beautiful and he has to write down something. So he
does, then folds the piece of paper and puts it in the other’s hand.
note1
He kisses Taehyung's forehead once again, lingering a little longer this time, knowing he'll only see
him again the next day.
The sun peaking through the window announces it’s already morning, and Jungkook has been
turning over on his bed for hours now. He couldn’t make himself fall asleep last night.
He feels tired, ridiculously so – but his mind is too loud. He can’t quiet down his thoughts of
everything that happened.
The scene of Taehyung’s mother crying under the doctor’s sympathetic, but still cold stare. The
image of his best friend, always willing to go out of his way to help anyone with anything, looking
like he was in agony watching the entire moment developing in front of his eyes, unable to do
anything about it.
Taehyung. How weak he looked lying down that bed. How lonely he seemed on that white room.
How out of place the bruise on his neck seemed.
How breathtakingly beautiful he managed to look, even in the cold, lifeless picture he was inserted
in.
Jungkook’s phone starts buzzing, scaring him out of his thoughts. What is he even thinking? He
gets up hurriedly and shakes his head, putting his insane thoughts to the back of his head.
It’s Jimin.

Jungkook bites his lip anxiously, knowing by the amount of questions he's making, Jimin probably
already noticed something is up with him. He hopes he doesn't say anything. How can he explain it
to him, when he, himself, doesn't even know what's going on?
He continues texting.
min3
min4
Jungkook locks his phone and throws it on the bed, not letting himself think about the
conversation he just had.
When Taehyung wakes up it's almost one in the afternoon. He's thankful he got to sleep through
the entire night.
He sits down on the bed and feels safe enough to take off the oxygen mask without any help. He's
done it enough times.
He feels something on his right hand.
Jungkook.
He really was here last night. Taehyung thought it had been a dream. He stares at the note and
smiles, his chest starting to fill with warmth with the thought of Jungkook thinking about him.
A nurse comes in and calls the doctor once she sees he's awake.
They explain to Taehyung everything that was decided, about him staying for two nights and how
they already talked to his mother. Taehyung only nods.
It's finally happening then, Taehyung thinks. He's finally at the end.
He always knew this would be it. One day they would have to put him on a hospital bed and wait
for him to lose his breath for good.
Taehyung wished he would at least be able to finish college. Give his mom something to be proud
about. She's been through so much. He thought he would have the chance to look at his soulmate's
eyes at least once in this life. His eyes start filling with tears, but he blinks them away.
The nurse says she'll bring him lunch soon and he smiles thankful at her as she leaves the room
with the doctor.
"Tae!" The boy with the easy smile hurries closer, "The doctor said you were awake."
"How are you feeling?" Jungkook asks, pulling a chair closer to Taehyung's bed and sitting down.
"Better?"
"I said I would, didn't I?" Jungkook says, furrowing his eyebrows.
Taehyung laughs weakly at the other. He couldn't get over how cute he was. His big doe-y eyes,
the way he wrinkles his nose, how he smiles showing his teeth. His pout when he furrows his
brows pretending to be angry. For some reason, it made Taehyung's heart flip over.
"Sorry I couldn't come sooner. I had this test today." Jungkook sighs. "But I'm pretty sure I failed
anyway so I should've just came anyway."
"Why do you think you failed?" Taehyung asks him, adjusting himself on the bed, making himself
more comfortable.
"Cause, uh..." Jungkook scratches his neck, feeling his face heat up. "I was worried. Wanted to see
you." he says softly.
Taehyung isn't sure he heard it right. He felt like running away from there, suddenly overwhelmed
by an emotion he couldn't name yet.
"Sorry I made you so worried." Taehyung blurts out, not sure he could think of anything else to
say.
"It's not that." Jungkook shakes his head, "I like being with you." And I like who I am when I'm
with you, He thinks to himself.
"Yeah. You're cute, so you need a cute nickname." Taehyung says still smiling, ignoring his own
cheeks heating up.
He's never let himself be this honest, this vulnerable, to anyone. And yet, when he's with
Taehyung, he feels like there's nothing the other would judge him for. He’s only known the other
for days, and yet he feels something when he’s with him that he’s never felt with anyone he’s ever
known. He feels safe.
The nurse knocks on the door and only now they realize they've been staring at each other for a
while, not saying anything, just happy to be on each other's sight. Both jump startled and look
away, the nurse apologizing for interrupting, saying Taehyung has to eat.
Jungkook smiles awkwardly at her and and Taehyung stutters a "thank you" as she leaves.
Taehyung eats his lunch while listening to the younger talk about his test, his teacher, his
classmates, everything and nothing and he knows he could listen to it for hours.
He notices Jungkook has a mole under his bottom lip. He notices he fixes his hair when he finishes
sentences. He notices his voice gets a little bit higher when it's about to break into laughter. He
notices his laugh is the kind that reaches his eyes and have it's own melody.
Jungkook notices how Taehyung gives him his undivided attention, more than he's ever received
from anyone. He notices how his eyes seem to stare into his soul. He notices how Taehyung has a
small mole under one of his eyes. He notices he could look at him for hours.
The day goes by just like that, both boys talking about whatever comes to their mind and treating it
like it's the most important topic, just because for some reason, they care an awful lot about what
the other has to say about pretty much everything.
"Kookie, it's getting kind of late." Taehyung says, noticing it's getting darker.
"Yeah." Jungkook sighs. "Jimin hyung said he was coming but I guess he's not anymore." He
checks his phone for texts but there's nothing.
They both fall quiet after that, neither wanting to say goodbye.
“How is it? Spending the night here?" Jungkook breaks the silence. Taehyung looks down,
thinking.
"Oh..." He starts fidgeting with his scarf. "It's not that bad. It's just cold and a bit too quiet."
Jungkook watches him carefully.
"Isn't it always quiet at night time, though?" The younger laughs, hoping to see the other do the
same.
"It is." Taehyung smiles, distant. "But it's kind of scary if you're awake through it."
Jungkook curses in his mind. Taehyung is right. He has been through a lot of those nights too, and
they are tough to get through. When it's too quiet you're forced to listen to what's inside your own
mind, and most of the time there's nothing good.
"Okay! Why don't you give me your number?" Jungkook smiles and claps at his own idea. "We
can text. To keep you distracted."
Taehyung’s eyes light up at that, grinning with his boxy smile and everything, and Jungkook feels
his heart start beating furiously against his ribcage out of a sudden, as if it wants to escape.
When Jungkook gets home, the first thing he does is text Taehyung.

He smiles, cheeks heating up like they never did before at just someone's photo. Taehyung really is
cute. His heart races when his phone rings again.

Jungkook puts his phone down and only now realizes he's been smiling. He sighs happily and
throws himself on the bed, letting himself feel the warmth that has been taking over his heart for a
while now.
A few minutes pass and his phone rings again and he jumps to reach it, thinking it could be
Taehyung again.

Jimin has been busy, crazy busy, all day. It's usually like this, but today he wished it had been
different. He couldn't stop thinking about Jungkook, and Taehyung, and wondering what the hell
has been going on with them.
He worries too much about his best friend, even with many reasons why he shouldn't. He can't
help it.
"Are you okay?" Yoongi asks him, worried tone. "We should stop here. I know you said you could
tutor me but it's late and you've been busy all day."
"It's okay, hyung. I'm sorry I didn't have time for you earlier." He smiles the best he can, furiously
searching for the right book between the pile in front of them.
"I'm serious, Jiminie." Yoongi says, serious, stopping him with both hands. "You should go home
and rest."
"It's okay." Yoongi smiles. "We'll do it tomorrow or some other day. Just, take care of yourself."
Jimin watches the older picking up the books and exiting the library.
He shakes his head, thinking one of these days he really might overwork himself into insanity.
Jimin knows something's up, Jungkook is acting weird, but good weird. Like he used to act before
all the bad stuff happened. Like he cares about people. He wants to bring it up, but he knows it will
push him away if he does.
He takes his phone and stares at his best friend's texts before typing something out.

Taehyung smiles at the photo on his phone. He's been looking at it for a while, remembering the
day he just had. Jungkook's laughter seem to still be echoing on the room. He feels warm, safe,
happy. He doesn't remember if he ever felt that way.
