Traffic Light Construction Project With Programmer

The paper describes a project to build a traffic light controlled by a CAN programmer. Students will learn to measure accurately, identify electrical components, build models, and perform electrical calculations. The project involves two electrical circuits, one to start the engine and another for the traffic light. The construction process will be divided into 15 steps to teach electrical and safety concepts.

CONSTRUCTION PROJECT OF A

TRAFFIC LIGHT WITH PROGRAMMER

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
By carrying out this project it is intended that students achieve the following objectives:
1. Know and use safety rules in the workshop.
2. Use appropriate technical vocabulary.
3. Measure accurately with the help of the ruler, square...
4. Identify the electrical components that make up the project circuit.
5. Build small models.

6. Perform electrical measurements and calculations.

7. Make a correct interpretation of the plans and their scales.
8. Respect teamwork.
9. Use recyclable materials.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK TO BE DONE

The construction of this project can be done individually or in small groups (more
recommended) of a maximum of 4 members. It involves building a traffic light in which the turning
on and off of the light bulbs is controlled by a can programmer.
This project is made up of two electrical circuits with two batteries:

• A circuit is made up of the 1.5 volt battery, the switch and the motor that moves the
can programmer through the speed reduction mechanism.
• The other circuit is made up of the 4.5 volt battery, the white switch, the traffic light,
which is made up of the three red, yellow and green light bulbs, which are connected
in parallel, and the programmer, which makes them turn off. or the traffic light bulbs
come on.

NECESSARY MATERIALS
To carry out this work, the following materials are necessary:
^ A table for the base.
^ Ice cream sticks.
^ Copper cables (several pieces).
^ Three colored light bulbs.
^ Cardboard, silicone and tin.
^ Rigid wire.
^ A wooden strip to cut it into pieces.
^ An empty can (tomato can for example).
^ Insulating tape.
^ Some clemas.
^ Two switches.
^ One engine and two tires.
^ Two batteries (one 1.5 V and one 4.5 V).

TOOLS NEEDED
Additionally, the following tools are necessary:
^ Sierra.
^ Tin soldering iron.
^ Scissors.
^ Auger for drilling.
^ Hot melt silicone gun.
^ Screwdriver.

BUILDING PROCESS
We are going to divide the construction process of this project into 15 parts that can
correspond approximately to the number of sessions that we will need to build it:
1. We will begin by explaining to the students what the project consists of, how the traffic
light works, the materials that we are going to use and the electrical circuits that it consists
of.
2. We will mark, cut and sand the edges of a wooden board that will serve as a base platform
for all the elements of the project (batteries, switches, programmer, motor, traffic light...).
3. Make the traffic light with ice cream sticks and insert the cables through its base.
4. Place the bulbs on the traffic light and attach them to the cables.
5. Build the pulley with cardboard that will serve as the programmer's speed reducer. We also
cut the slats and drilled the holes so that the pulley can rotate.
6. Cover one of the sides of the can that will serve as a programmer, place its rigid wire shaft
on it and cut the sticks that will serve as a support.
7. Stick the insulating tape to the programmer according to the ignition times that we give to
each light and taking into account that the ignition order is:
GREEN LIGHT ____. YELLOW LIGHT ________. RED LIGHT
8. Place the motor on the board and the reduction pulley and programmer supports. To do this,
apply hot melt silicone with the help of the gun. “Be careful not to burn yourself.”

9. Put on the switch and the battery that start the motor.
10. Connect the motor – switch – battery circuit, soldering the wires to the motor. “Be careful
not to burn yourself.” Put the rubber bands that transmit the movement to the programmer.
11. Place the terminal blocks and screw in the contactors, making sure that contact is made with
the programmer.
12. Place the battery that powers the traffic light and solder the clips to the cables with the tin
soldering iron. “Be careful not to burn yourself.”
13. Place the cables in the switch that turns on the traffic light and connect the traffic light
cables to the terminal blocks.
14. Check the general operation of the traffic light when we close the two circuits. Verify that
everything is correct (cables well connected, supports correctly glued with silicone, lights
on in correct order...)
15. Once the students have written the project report, each group presents the work done in
class to the rest of their classmates.

EVALUATION CRITERIA
To evaluate our students in the construction of this mini project we will take into account
the following evaluation criteria:
