QUESTION 1
a) Explain briefly the following terms as applied to reservoir simulation with the support of
relevant diagram and equation.
i) Mass balance
ii) Black Oil model
(4 marks)
b) Compare the reservoir simulation applications at Appraisal and in Mature Fields in term of
field development plan and strategy.
(6 marks)
QUESTION 2
Flow equations are non-linear partial differential equations (PDEs). Derivation of a single
phase flow equation for a compressible fluid requires the application of mass (material)
balance between flow and accumulation and then application of Darcy’s Law.
a) With the aid of relevant diagram and showing all steps, derive a simple, one dimensional,
radial, horizontal, one phase diffusivity equation as follows. State all assumptions that you
made.
(10 marks)
b) From the above diffusivity equation, simplify the equation with substitution of the hydraulic
diffusivity, Dh constant term. Show all steps.
(3 marks)
c) With the aid of relevant grid block diagram, derive the single phase pressure equation for
a 3D non-linear partial differential equation as follows. Show all steps and state all
assumptions that you made (Derive this 3D mass conservation equation from the start).

QUESTION 3
The linear equations in the implicit solution of single phase linear fluid flow can be solved using
the iteration method. Solve the following linear equations using point iterative solution with the
initial guess of 2.0 for x1, x2, x3 and x4 (summarize the results in Table 1). Compare the
iteration counters with the iterative method of using the latest information available (Table 2)
and conclude the results.
You may solve using MS Excel and fill up the values in Table 1 and Table 2 based on the
Excel calculation (Note: Please fill in and include the completed Table 1 and Table 2 in your
answer script and also submit the Excel file together with your answer script).
