The Importance of Mathematics in Systems Engineering

Mathematics is fundamental to systems engineering because it provides the logic and reasoning necessary for the design and development of systems. However, the current mathematics courses in the systems engineering program are not relevant enough, which causes poor student performance. Mathematics courses need to be restructured to focus more on the mathematical modeling of real systems.

Introduction.

The Engineer works by making decisions that may be technical or other types, commercial,
for example. This means that you must be accustomed to reasoning in an orderly manner,
which is learned when you know Mathematics, and knowing Mathematics is not about
calculating more or less well, but rather understanding perfectly the way in which the
solution to a problem or the formulation of a question has been reached. a theory. For
example, if you solve a first degree equation by saying that what adds on one side goes to the
other by subtracting, you don't know Mathematics.

The Engineer must apply sciences such as Strength of Materials, which derive from Physics
in which, in turn, the language to use is mainly mathematical. Mathematics is objective, clear
and universal, as the actions of an engineer are expected to be, which is why he must have a
mathematical mentality.

Importance of Mathematics in Systems Engineering.

Mathematics and Systems Engineering.

Well, to begin with, we must keep in mind that mathematics is necessary in all careers and in
everyday life, mathematics and engineering have a lot to do with it since logic is based on
mathematics for programming and other things in terms of systems. .
In systems engineering we will realize that mathematics will serve us a lot since it is the basis
for programming, designing and developing basic or complex programs. We realize that
throughout our career we will have mathematics, for example for an algorithm or for many
things that are They are going to present us day by day, if we realize that we are going to find
numbers everywhere, for example when we are going to measure the amount of disk or the
bytes or many things that we find in a computer or simply in a system.
We will realize that from the moment we sit in front of a system or a program, most of us
need mathematical logic either to develop or to show us numbers, equations or variables.
Mathematics is with us not only since we start a career but from a very young age we begin
to adopt formulas or simply additions.
Systems Engineering is the application of mathematical and physical sciences to develop
systems that economically use the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of humanity.
Mathematics is the basis of everything in this world, from the moment you are born you are
entering the mathematical world, in a certain way our universe is mathematical, that is, the
importance of mathematics in engineering is necessary, an engineer needs the ability to
reason and resolve complexities in the work area where they operate.
Mathematics is very important for the systems engineering career, the engineer must study
mathematics. There is no other way to adequately deform analytical thinking, demonstrative
rigor, the sense of accuracy and that of acceptable approximation as well.
Numerical objectivity, the propensity for measurement, and many other qualities of good
engineers. There are several branches in this science of mathematics, and engineering
curriculum designers have real problems deciding what will and will not be included in the
degree. Differential and integral calculus is considered basic in engineering.

But there are few engineers who spend all day making derivatives and solving integrals in
their work. It is very interesting to know that those who develop the technical areas of
engineering the most during their professional life, or those who seek more advanced
specializations or doctoral studies, are precisely those who require calculus as an everyday
tool. We can see an everyday example below about problems that this engineer presents
spoken by students from La Universidad Mariana.

2
Description of the problem.
Some perceptions of the problem of the relevance of mathematics education in systems
engineering are described through symptoms, causes, diagnosis and prognosis.
• Symptoms.
The relevance of mathematics courses in the training of the system engineer is not visible in
the current curricular framework. Furthermore, it is observed that in the design of the current
curriculum, mathematical education courses do not make a significant contribution to the
training of the systems engineer. systems, causing minimal interest on the part of students
towards the study of mathematics, which implies low performance, high loss and repetition of
mathematics education courses.
• Causes.
Absence in the curricular mesh of the Systems Engineering program of the three functions
that basic sciences fulfill within the training object of systems engineering, which are:
Concrete and immediate tools for the modeling of intelligent systems for decision making,
which They underlie the cognitive processes that engineers systematically apply in the
planning, analysis, design and evaluation of information systems and that also provide
concepts to understand the automation of processes from other disciplines and areas of
knowledge other than engineering (Gaitan & Bello, 2002).
• Diagnosis.
The contents of mathematical education that are developed in the current Systems
Engineering curriculum are not relevant and essential to a high degree to the training of the
Systems Engineer, because its center of study lies in the symbolic teaching of mathematics.
and not to the real contribution of this science regarding the process of mathematical
modeling of real situations and its coupling with the specific area of systems engineering.
• Forecast.
If the misadaptation of the mathematics module of the general area in engineering with the
specific area of the same continues, the following will continue to be presented: low
performance, failure and repetition of the students of the Systems Engineering program at the
Mariana University, high rates in student dropout, Laziness, laziness, apathy towards the
study of systems engineering, High stagnation of the systems engineering program, Poor
development of skills in the appropriate manner desired for systems engineering students. 3.
Objectives General Objective: Restructure the curricular components that are developed in
the mathematics courses of the Systems Engineering Program of the Mariana University, in
such a way that they are relevant and essential to the training of the systems engineer.

3
Conclusion.
Mathematics is very important in the development of the human mind, since it improves the
ability to understand and face everyday problems in any area; we need mathematics
constantly.

And even more so for the Systems Engineering career, mathematics is extremely important
since it improves the capacity of our brain to analyze, detect all the external and internal
variables that affect the system and thus be able to create various solutions that adapt to our
resources and that satisfy the requirements of the users (system users).

A systems engineer must know and understand mathematics so that another person does not
take him for a fool in some information management, reports, statistics, etc.

In conclusion, a good study of mathematics provides the student with the opportunity to
receive positive results: understanding what and who surrounds him, confidence in his
decisions and astute thinking that is essential when solving a problem and the different forms
of which can solve it.
