INTRODUCTION
The following research will be carried out starting from the creation and/or origin of
the APA standards. What are they? What is their importance? Why are they used?
Why are we governed by them? How can APA standards contribute to research?
What differences? There are between APA Standards 2019 and 2020.

We will also seek to clarify how APA standards can be used as support tools for
researchers who wish to develop written works on a particular topic that influences
social life or human behavior.

Now we must in turn clarify in this essay why we must be governed by these
standards and why they must be used, we understand as standards a series of
written guidelines that have legal value and that we must abide by and in this way
avoid inappropriate behavior, the APA standards They deal with topics about
written research, authors, references and citations which must be revealed
textually within the works carried out in order to respect the originality and rights of
the creator of the document.

DEVELOPMENT
CONCEPTUALIZATION, DEFINITION, ORIGIN AND CHARACTERISTICS :

What are APA standards and what are their origins? According to Vélez and Mira
(2016), “The acronym APA is the abbreviation of the American Psychological
Association (American Psychological Association in English). The APA standards
emerged in the United States of North America, in 1929, from the need of a
specialized group from different branches, especially psychology, to give their own
style to their documents”, (p.3).

The APA standards arise from an agreement between a group of professionals,

such as psychologists and company and business administrators, in which they
proposed establishing a series of guidelines that would serve as support when
carrying out scientific studies, preparation and presentation of written works and in
this way apply the analysis and understanding of all the information compiled. It
can be said that through scientific research it is necessary to read books and texts
that serve as background and references to strengthen and understand the ideas
raised by the researcher regarding the topic to be developed.

According to what is stated, APA standards focus on defining the uniform use of
elements such as:
o Margins and document format.
o Punctuation and abbreviations .
o Font sizes .
o Construction of tables and figures .
o Citation of references .

This is what we mean when we talk about guidelines, regarding the structure and
construction of an article or a scientific work, respect for the correct way of writing
according to these standards, also serves as a guide when taking references from
works that contain useful material to strengthen the research, the quotes from
authors serve as references and at the same time to respect their rights and
originality in their works.

APA STANDARDS 2020 6TH EDITION:

 Letter- size paper

 Font: Arial – Times News Roman
 Letter size: 12 points
 Spacing: 2.0 line spacing, no space between paragraphs
 Aligned: Left, unjustified
 Margins: 2.5 on each side
 Indentation: 5 spaces in the first line of each paragraph

The paper size in APA standards must be letter (YES, letter. NOT A4).
The measurement is 21.59 cm x 27.94 cm; Important to note, the paper used
should not have any type of adhesive, tape, glue or staple (no advertising).
MARGIN
The margins will be the same for all sides of the page: 2.5 cm (1 inch) for the top,
bottom, right and left margins.

NUMERATION
Regarding the numbering of the pages, I will explain in detail: they must be
numbered in the upper right corner. The numbering should begin on the front and
back covers, but it should not be displayed here.

INDENTION IN APA STANDARDS

When we use indentation, it will be 5 spaces at each beginning of the paragraph
(you will not use the tab key).
If you carry out research or work where you use statistical data, numbers or sums,
you must write the number, for example: “80% of the population studied
demonstrated to have linguistic resources in line with their level of education.”
From the index (table of contents), list of tables, list of annexes, images and others
such as dedications and preface if they are displayed but in Roman numerals (I, II,
III... etc.) . The rest is in Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3… etc.).

IMPORTANCE OF APA STANDARDS:

Esquivel (2016) states that the importance of APA standards is to refer to research
sources because it provides greater reliability in the quality of the document
prepared, and to avoid plagiarism, it is vitally important to cite and reference any
material consulted. , paraphrased or used.
Now according to Esquivel (2016), the documents that must be cited in APA are:
short quotes, long quotes, bibliographic references, books, magazines, web pages,
electronic books, electronic journals, electronic documents, sheet music,
dictionaries, encyclopedias, theses online, audiovisual material and films.

THE SEVENTH EDITION

The cover can be made with the new format established by the APA manual,
respecting the centering of the text, the numbering in the upper right corner and the
following order:
 Title of the project
 Author
 Affiliation, college or university
 Course
 Teacher's name
 Date
QUALIFICATION
The title of your research should be centered on the page and in bold, with a
maximum of 15 words.
At the bottom and centered you will find your full name as the author of the
researcher, then the country, city and date.

APA REFERENCES
Quotes are essays that are extracted “textually” from a book, website, blog,
magazine, etc. without modifying its wording, respecting the author.
When we want to support a main idea, we can use this technique, but we must do
it well. Let me explain: It will depend on how many lines the textual quote
occupies... Don't stress! I'm going to detail it for you.

IF THE TEXTUAL QUOTE IS 4 LINES OR LESS

The author's text must be enclosed in quotes and centered on the page. If you are
going to ignore some words, either at the beginning, middle or end of the quote,
you should use parentheses and ellipses (...) At the end of the quote, the author,
date and page should be placed in parentheses. where it was extracted.
Then we must paraphrase said quote, that is, write what it means in our own
words. If instead of emphasizing the author, our quote is focused on the text, we
follow the same steps that were mentioned previously.

IF THE TEXTUAL QUOTE IS MORE THAN 4 LINES

Whether giving emphasis to the author or to the text that we are going to extract, in
both cases we will omit the quotes. We are going to add 2cm to the left margin, the
letter will be smaller (11 pts).

The author, date and page will be placed at the end of the quote in parentheses. In
the same way we paraphrase the verbatim quote.
IF WE HAVE TEXTUAL QUOTES FROM ONE AUTHOR OR MORE AUTHORS
 A single author: Author's last name, year, page.
 Two authors: Last name of the 1st and 2nd author separated by a comma,
year, page.
 Three to five authors: Last name of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd author separated
by a comma, year, page.
 Six or more authors: Last name of the 1st author and the word “et.al”
(without the quotes) which means “and others”.
Please note that with the most current APA format (Seventh Edition) you can
shorten the textual mention of the authors by appending the abbreviation “et al.”
and also add up to 20 if necessary, for example:

CONCLUSION
After researching and studying what the APA standards are, we concluded that this
series of rules arise from the ideas of experts and professionals who sought in
some way for their works and the rights that derive from them to be respected and
recognized, these works and investigations were useful and served as a reference
for the foundation of other future investigations, also providing originality and
elegance when carrying out a work.

The APA standards should be used to achieve a formal outline and an orderly
format of the texts in a work, in addition to locating the research in time and space
and why it is being carried out and why it will be done, it seeks to present a main
idea. which the researcher must explain clearly according to his understanding and
analysis of the texts read.

The seventh edition 2020, incorporates new the correct way to make the title of the
work, the references taken as sources for the research, the citations of the authors,
the articulated way of how they should be located in each citation if there are two
authors or more, the authorization of new fonts and writing size as an example is
the font Calibri number 11, Arial 11, Georgia, 11 and Lucyda Sans 11, references
can be taken from series and television programs that include the topic
investigated, we also note that this new edition in turn disincorporated issues such
as geographical location, term recovered from, the DOI tag written in the link, the
type of format when references are taken from electronic books.
