OLYMPIC GAMES
The Olympic Games are the largest sporting celebration in the world. It is
held every four years and is based in a city (which is previously defined by the
international sports committee) and brings together athletes from the five continents
who participate in different sports disciplines representing their country.
There are the Summer Olympic Games and the Winter Olympic Games that are inspired
by the games that were organized in ancient times in Olympia, Greece (8th century BC).
The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece in 1896.
Competitors from more than 200 countries currently participate in 46 disciplines,
including: athletics, basketball, cycling, rowing, soccer, hockey, taekwondo, tennis and
volleyball.
PROFESSIONAL SPORTSMEN
Everyone can play sports, but those who dedicate themselves to it full time, and those
who do it recreationally, sporadically, do not do so at the same level. The latter are
considered amateur or practicing athletes, while the former are professional athletes or
sports professionals.
This means that professional athletes live to compete in their chosen discipline: they
attend championships, are part of official local, national or regional teams, and even go
to the Olympic Games representing their country. In exchange, they receive payment,
since sport is their profession and their job.
SPORTS TRAINING
Sports practice is part of what is called physical education : the training and formation
of the human body through sport, to strengthen its capabilities, tone its muscles and
exercise it in the areas of balance, agility and resistance.
This is part of the usual content of our schools and secondary schools. Many people do
not continue further training, or they practice some sport more or less occasionally, with
their friends. Professional athletes, on the other hand, continue to exercise in the sport
they chose, or are best at, throughout their lives.
RISKS OF SPORTS
Sports share a high degree of affinity with art. Disciplines such as figure skating or tai
chi are sports that are very close to artistic performances in themselves. Traditional
activities such as gymnastics and yoga, or more recent activities such as bodybuilding,
tricking and parkour, also share elements of sport with artistic elements.
The fact that art is so close to sport in some situations is probably related to the nature
of sports. The definition of sport establishes the idea of performing an activity not only
for the usual purpose; for example, not running just to get somewhere, but running of
your own free will, in order to maintain fitness.
This is similar to a common view of aesthetics, which views objects beyond their
usefulness. For example, evaluating a car not for taking us from one place to another,
but for its shape, figure, etc. Likewise, a sporting activity like jumping is not only
valued as an effective way to avoid obstacles; skill, dexterity and style also count.
SPORTS AND SOCIETY
Sports have a great influence on society; Its importance in culture and in the
construction of national identity stands out notably. In the practical sphere, sport has
tangible and predominantly positive effects in the spheres of education, the economy
and public health.
In the educational field, sport plays a role in transmitting values to children, adolescents
and even adults. In conjunction with physical activity, values of respect, responsibility,
commitment and dedication, among others, are instilled, serving a process of
socialization and involvement with improvements in social structures and attitudes.
Sport contributes to establishing social relationships between different people and
different cultures and thus contributes to instilling the notion of respect towards others,
teaching how to compete constructively, without making antagonism an end in itself.
Another important social value in sport is learning how to win and how to recognize
defeat without sacrificing goals and objectives.
In the economic section, the influence of sport is undoubted, due to the number of
people who practice sport as well as those who enjoy it as mass spectacles, making
sports important businesses that finance athletes, agents, media, passenger cars. and also
indirectly, to other sectors of the economy.
SPORTS AND TECHNOLOGY
Health. Technology is present from nutrition to injury treatment, increasing the athlete's
potential. Contemporary athletes are able to play sports at older ages, recover more
quickly from injuries and train more effectively than previous generations. A negative
aspect of the technology applied to sports consists of the design and consumption of
doping substances, which improve the athlete's performance to very high levels,
sometimes seriously affecting their health, potentially causing irreversible damage to
the body. or even death. For this reason, in a large number of sports, these substances
are prohibited by the different sports regulatory bodies at a professional level, and their
consumption could lead to the disqualification or disqualification of the offender.
CONCLUSION
In short, sport and physical exercise generally improve mental function, which has an
impact on all psychological and emotional levels, contributing to a greater sense of
well-being and optimism.
