B.

Specific Gravity of Cement (SNI 03-6820-2002)

1. Aims and Objectives
a. Meaning
This method is intended as a test and reference for testing the
density of Portland cement.
b. Objective
The purpose of this method is to obtain the density value of
Portland cement, which is used for cement quality control.
2. Theoretical Basic
According to SNI – 7064 – 2004 PCC (Portland Composite Cement)
is a hydrolus binding material resulting from grinding together Portland
cement slag and gypsum with one or more inorganic materials resulting
from mixing Portland cement powder with powder from other anoranic
materials. These inorganic materials include blast furnace slag, pozzolan,
asilicate compounds, limestone with a total content of inorganic materials
of 6% - 35% of the mass of Portland cement. The specific gravity of
cement required by SK SNI 15 -2531 -1991 ranges from 3.00 – 3.20 t/m3.
You need to know the specific gravity of cement because it is used in
calculating concrete mix ratios. Its use is for general construction such as
concrete work, brick masonry, gutters, roads, precast, prestressed concrete,
concrete panels, concrete bricks (paving blocks) and so on.
3. Tools and Materials
a. Tools
1) Le Chatelier bottle
2) Scales with accurancy 0,1 grams
3) Cups
4) Calculating tools
5) Thermometer
b. Materials
1) Portland cement dough
2) Kerosene
4. Work Steps
a. Prepare tools and materials
b. Fill the Le Chatelier bottle with kerosene or naptha until the scale is
between 0-1, dry the inside of the bottle above the liquid level.
c. Put the bottle containing the liquid into the water bath, leave it until a
constant temperature is obtained. Then read the scale on the bottle
(V1)
d. Insert the cement test object into the bottle little by little, making sure
that the test object does not stick to the bottle above the surface of the
liquid
e. After all the test objects are inserted, slowly turn the bottle at an angle
until air bubbles no longer appear on the surface of the liquid. (±20
minutes)
f. Put the bottle back into the water, leave it until a constant temperature
is obtained. Then read the scale on the bottle.

a. Calculation of Specific Gravity of Cement

1) Specific gravity I = ×1
,

= 3,00 gram/cm3
2) Specific gravity II = ×1
,

= 2,87 gram/cm3
3) Specific gravity III = ×1
,

= 3,06 gram/cm3

4) Specific gravity IV = ×1
,

= 3,00 gram/cm3
5) Specific gravity V = ×1
,

= 3,02 gram/cm3
b. Average of Specific Gravity of Cement
3 + 2,87 + 3,06 + 3 + 3,02
=
5

= 2, 99 gram/cm3

8. Conclusion
From the calculation, the specific gravity obtained is 2,99 gram/cm3.
This value does not comply with the specifications of SK SNI 03–2531–
1991 with a value of 3.00 – 3.20.
9. Suggestion
a. When pouring cement, be careful not to spill it because it will affect
the specific gravity.
b. When reading the vessel, you must be careful and careful.
10. Constraint
The lack of equipment means that practitioners have to take turns
with other groups
