The functions of language.

 Denotative or referential.

It occurs when the sender uses language to transmit information to the receiver.

It's half past three.

 Emotional or expressive.

It occurs when we express feelings or desires.

What a shame, Real Madrid almost won!

 Conative or appellative.

The speaker wants to draw the listener's attention.

Hey, hey, wait a minute!

 Fatic or contact.

It is used to establish contact or cut off communication.

Hi how are things? Bye see you soon!

 Poetics or aesthetics.

It is used when beauty is sought and the oral or written message is especially cared for.

Loving is when you protect her from the rain and the wind.
Loving is when you hug her and forget about time.

 Metalinguistics.

When you use language to talk about your own language.

But, it is an adversative conjunction.
