Letter G and its symbolism
In this work I will try to reveal the meaning of the letter “G” and its symbolism.
We know that like all symbols, it can have many interpretations, it is difficult to
reduce it to just one. When talking about the letter G of the Freemasons, it must be
remembered that it does not appear isolated, but rather appears in the center of a
pentagram, which is usually called the Flaming Star. In turn, this five-pointed
geometric figure is originated from a pentagon, a polygon that constitutes the
graphic expression of the number five, the partner, also the number 5, they are the
five brothers who make a fair match. This letter “ G” seventh letter of the Latin
alphabet, which has two sounds, one strong in front of the vowels e, i and a softer
one in front of the vowels a, o, u, the “G” was related to “Glory, Greatness and
Geometry” Glory for God, Greatness for the teacher and Geometry for the brothers.
Sometimes we find the “G” in the middle of the compass and the square,
eventually it is represented by the “Eye of Horus” which represents the
omnipresence and omniconsciousness of the Cosmic God. The Eye of Horus can
have two meanings, depending on which of the two eyes (left or right) is
represented. The right eye is the one that represents the sun and light, which is why
it is also known as the “Eye of Rá”, it is undoubtedly the best known since in ancient
Egypt it was the most powerful amulet , with powerful protection. , is very common
in Greece and is known there as the Greek eye and is used against the negative
influence of envy, or evil eye. According to tradition, in times of Babylon and Egypt,
the bad feelings of human beings were projected through the most expressive part
of the body, which are the eyes, which are said to be the mirror of the soul.
However, the first and most fundamental Masonic meaning of the letter "G" is
that which links it with the Platonic and Pythagorean philosophical schools and,
through these, with the Orphic initiation (it is a religious current of ancient Greece,
related to Orpheus, master of enchantments), it is also associated with ancient
mysteries such as geometry, as well as its equivalent of Geometer or geometric
principle, which is identified with the Great Architect. Pythagoras pondered them
and Plato was convinced that only the Initiates in the Second Degree could
understand the scope of his teachings, the reason for the famous inscription drawn
on the door of his school: “No one enters here if he is not a geometer.” In this
sense, the interpretation of the Anglo-Saxon Freemasons also fits, who see in the
letter “G” simply the initial of the word God, that is, God, understood as the principle
of Good (Good), others affirm that it refers to the “Creative Principle.” or First
Cause”, that is, The Great Architect of the Universe, usually expressed with the
acronym GADU, and therefore hence the “G”, which we always see shining on the
Flaming Star.
Just as the cross is taken as an expressive symbol of Christianity, thinking
about the cross where Jesus died, since there are many crosses and they all have
their own meaning, we also have the Maltese cross, the Byzantine, the Egyptian,
the Celtic. , etc. Something similar happens in every Masonic Lodge with the letter
“G”, which can be seen either painted on the wall or sculpted in wood or metal, and
suspended over the Master's chair. It is one of the most familiar symbols of all the
symbols of Freemasonry. It is the one to which the poet Burns alludes in his
frequently mentioned and recognized lines, which are expressed as follows:
"- ...that brilliant hieroglyph, which only the Artificers saw once;" Of course, this is
the only time they understood it, because once they saw it they knew at the same
time what it meant. There is some uncertainty about the exact date. In general, it is
very difficult to point to a specific year for these instances. Generally, these are
processes and they occur over time until they become a symbol that is universally
identified. However, we can locate his “birth” in some processes, there, in the years
of T's life. Henry, who established the Rite of the Flaming Star, it can also be noted
that the Flaming Star along with the letter “G” does not appear in the rituals until the
year 1737.
when this symbol was first introduced into Speculative Masonry.
- The first adopted by the English ritual manufacturers has been, without any
observation, transported to the Freemasonry of the continent and is found as a
symbol in all the systems of Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and all other
countries where Freemasonry has been introduced; In Germany, too, it serves, just
as in England, only as an intelligent symbol. The letter G in such case, in
Freemasonry, has the same force and significance as the letter yod. For Guénon,
the initial letter of the sacred name, the similarity in phonetics between IOD and
God, leads it to symbolize the fundamental meaning of sacred science. It is only the
symbol of the Hebrew letter, and like that, it is the symbol of God, the letter G is only
the symbol of the symbol. - As to his reference to Geometry, Kloss, the German
Masonic historian, says that the ancient active Masons applied the entire science of
Geometry to the art of construction, the application of which gave the modern
English Masons occasion to embrace the entire system of Freemasonry under the
title of Geometry, so both the symbol of that science, as well as that of God, was
adopted in order to give elevation to the Degree of Fellow Mason.
Indeed, the symbol, being considered sacred due to its reference to the Great
Geometer of the Universe, was worthy of being applied to that science, which has
been considered synonymous with Freemasonry since ancient times.
Currently, in every Masonic Lodge, the letter “G” can be seen in the center of
the triangle, placed at the top of the two Columns of the frontispiece of the Temple,
from there the brilliant rays of its teachings emanate.
To conclude, I must say that the letter “G” as we climb in degrees, we make it part
of our life, since this letter is typical of second-grade study, and is directly related to
the flaming star, which tells us will give new teachings, the letter "G", as already
indicated, is the genuine symbol of the Great Architect of the Universe; being the means by which
we acquire the lights and knowledge that the Great Teacher provides us.
We realize that the letter “G” has endless meanings or interpretations, in the
Second Degree, it represents the sciences that the Companion must dedicate
himself to studying, it is the luminous beacon that guides us to the discovery of
natural phenomena and is It presents us individually as a reward and result of the
perfect knowledge or self-knowledge of our own existence.
In our C: ritual. We refer directly to the letter “G” on several occasions, for
example: When the M:.V:.M:. ask the H:.S:.V:.Why did you become a Companion?
And he answers to know the letter “G”, in the closing when the M:.V:.M:. He tells
H:.S:.V:. placed in this position. What have you seen? And the SV:. Answer I have
seen the letter “G” glow.
Like any Masonic symbol, it needs an experience to achieve its understanding,
since that is where it acquires its true meaning and meaning. This symbolic letter
brings us together and keeps Matter united with the Universe and is projected in the
temple, towards us who sometimes share little as brothers or laymen, but unites us
with a feeling to share the heat of the ritual that is generated and germinates,
because It is the source from which all conceptions of greatness arise capable of
providing man with the inspiration with which conscience forces him to meditate in
his desire to search, study and discover all the secrets that our mother nature holds
within her. The Masonic symbol of the star with the G in the center is also the
emblem of the Universe, the letter "G" is the symbol of the germ and germination of
generation; Well, all those agents gathered together in such a way that they provide
us with the image of the Supreme Being, that is, God, the Great Architect of the
Universe; The five-pointed Star is the symbol of the individual personification of
man, and represents the supreme authority of the Great Teacher.
Masonic symbols do not have pre-established meanings, they do not accept unique or
exclusive interpretations.
