Ketamine is a dissociative anaesthetic.
Used medically it is relatively safe as it does not
suppress breathing or vital functions. Used as
a street drug there are a number of serious risks.
If Ketamine powder is snorted the effects last somewhere
between 20 minutes and an hour. If it is swallowed as a pill the
effects last much longer. Injecting Ketamine carries all the
usual risks of using needles and increases the likelihood of
undesirable effects.
R
R emember: ‘THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS TOO SMALL A DOSE OF
KETAMINE.’ Taking a very small line and waiting for 20 minutes and then taking
another small line if required is better than taking a big one and hoping it’s the
right dose. To reduce the risk of overdose if you are injecting Ketamine, use a much
smaller dose than you would if snorting.
I
I f you decide to use it take it somewhere you feel safe and secure. Get somebody
sober to stay with you (a ‘GROUND CONTROLLER’). They can look after you
and can reassure you in the phases when you can talk and listen and make sure
you don’t hurt yourself.
V
V omiting is common. It is therefore wise to avoid eating at least three hours
before you take ketamine (as you would if given an anaesthetic in hospital). It is
particularly important that if somebody loses conciousness they aren’t lying on
their back. Choking on your own vomit in this position is a common cause of death.
I
I f somebody loses consciousness (they are not moving
or making any noise when you try to rouse them),
put them in the RECOVERY POSITION.
If they don’t come round call an ambulance and tell
the ambulance crew what they have taken.
T olerance rapidly develops to Ketamine (it takes more to get the same effect).
Ketamine can become psychologically addictive. Short term memory loss is an
occupational hazard and for dependent users long-term memory loss may also
occur. Ketamine psychosis (similar to amphetamine psychosis) is a result of using
too much too often. The paranoia and delusions usually fade and disappear if you
stop using. If not see a doctor.
I
I f you have a mental health problem or suffer from fits or are at all worried about
any of the dangers mentioned DON’T take it.
K etamine is a class B drug. Long term users have reported abdominal pain or K
cramps. Over the last few years it has become clear that ketamine can cause
serious irreversible damage to the bladder if used in high doses for long periods.
