The Solar System

Introduction to the Solar System

The Solar System is a vast and fascinating part of the universe that consists of the Sun and all the

objects that orbit around it, including planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. Our Solar System is

located in the Milky Way galaxy and is approximately 4.6 billion years old.
The Solar System

The Sun

The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System. It is a massive ball of hot, glowing gases and

provides the necessary heat and light for life on Earth. The Sun's gravity keeps the planets in orbit

around it.
The Solar System

The Planets

There are eight planets in our Solar System, which are divided into two categories: terrestrial planets

(Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars) and gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune). Each

planet has unique characteristics and features.

Dwarf Planets

Dwarf planets are celestial bodies that orbit the Sun and are similar to planets but do not meet all

the criteria to be classified as such. The most well-known dwarf planet is Pluto.

Moons

Moons are natural satellites that orbit planets. Earth has one moon, while other planets have

multiple moons. Moons vary in size, composition, and characteristics.

Asteroids and Comets

Asteroids are rocky objects that orbit the Sun, mostly found in the asteroid belt between Mars and

Jupiter. Comets are composed of ice, dust, and rocky material and have distinctive tails that glow

when they approach the Sun.
