Module 2: Vector Calculus

1. Find the directional derivative of

a)  = x 2 yz + 4 xz 2 at (1, −2, −1) along a = 2i − j − 2k .
xz
b)  = at (1, −1,1) inthe direction of c = i − 2 j + k .
x + y22

c)  = 2e2 x − y + z at P (1,3,1) in the direction towards the point Q ( 2,1,3) .

2. Find the angle between the surfaces
a) x 2 + y 2 + z 2 = 9 and z = x 2 + y 2 − 3 at ( 2, −1, 2 ) .
b) x log z = y 2 − 1 and x 2 y = 2 − z at (1,1,1) .
3. Find the constants a and b such that the surfaces ax 2 − byz = ( a + 2 ) x and
4 x2 y + z 3 = 4 are orthogonal at the point (1,-1,2).
4. Find div f and curl f for (i) f =  ( x 3 + y 3 + z 3 + 3xyz ) , (ii) f =  ( 2 x 3 y 2 z 4 )
5. If f = x 2i + y 2 j + z 2 k and g = yz i + zx j + xy k , show that f  g is a
solenoidal vector.
6. If f = ( 3x 2 y − z ) i + ( xz 3 + y ) j − 2 x 3 z 2 k find curl curl f .
7. Show that the following vectors are irrotational. Hence find a scalar function  such that
f =  .
a) f = ( z + Siny ) i + ( x Cosy − z ) j + ( x − y ) k .
b) f = 2 xyz 3i + x 2 z 3 j + 3x 2 yz 2 k .
8. If f = ( x + y + az ) i + ( bx + 2 y − z ) j + ( x + cy + 2 z ) k find a, b, c such that curl f = 0 .
Hence find a scalar function  such that f =  .
9. Show that r n r is irrotational for any value of ‘n’ but is solenoidal only for n=3.
10. Study all concepts from Curvilinear coordinates.
