LOGIC PATTERNS
This involves:
 sorting objects with different properties
 ordering objects by some property

Properties can be:

 Quantitative (measurable)
 size, length, width, time, color shade
 Qualitative (characteristics)
 color, general shape, purpose, origin

SEATWORK 2.1
A. There are two patterns used on this five images. List them down.

List down patterns used:

1. ________________________________________
2. ________________________________________

* Refer to the item on the previous slide as an example.

**No need to draw the five images on the seatwork paper.

B. There are three patterns used on this five images. List them down.

List down the patterns used:

1. ________________________________________
2. ________________________________________
3. ________________________________________
* Refer to the item on the previous slide as an example.
**No need to draw the five images on the seatwork paper.

SEATWORK 2.1
C. Creating your own Pattern: Draw five images that follow 3 or 4 patterns. Use the
five-box layout as your guide.

List down the 3 or 4 patterns used:

1. ________________________________________
2. ________________________________________
3. ________________________________________
4. ________________________________________

NUMBER PATTERNS
 Counting – any form of counting is a pattern because you usually know
what comes next
 1, 2, 3, ...
 3, 6, 9, 12, ...
 1, 3, 5, 7, …
 25, 50, 75, 100, …
 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, …

MODULE 2
14

NUMBER PATTERNS
Functions – patterns showing how one number changes into another
Given: f (x) = x2 + 1
for x = { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 }
Answer: f (x) = { 2, 5, 10, 17, 26 }
The answer here is the newly created number pattern which follows the rules of the
given function

MODULE 2
15

Given: f (x) = x2 + 1
for x = { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 }
Solution: f (1) = 12 + 1
Functions work by substituting a value of x
=1+1 in the function then compute.
=2
f (2) = 22 + 1
Do this repeatedly to each assigned value of
=4+1 x.
=5
Complete solution on next page.

MODULE 2
16

Given: f (x) = x2 + 1
for x = { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 }

Solution: f (1) = 12 + 1 = 1 + 1 = 2
f (2) = 22 + 1 = 4 + 1 = 5
f (3) = 32 + 1 = 9 + 1 = 10
f (4) = 42 + 1 = 16 + 1 = 17
f (5) = 52 + 1 = 25 + 1 = 26
Answer: f (x) = { 2, 5, 10, 17, 26 }

Teacher: Mr. Raynard Nuguid Copyright © 2020 De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. All rights reserved.
MODULE 2
17

(Next) Given: f (x) = x2 – x

for x = { 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 }
Solution: f (2) = 22 – 2 = 2
f (4) = 42 – 4 = 12
f (6) = 30
Use a calculator to double-check for yourself
f (8) = 56 the values that you see here.
f (10) = 90
Answer: f (x) = { 2, 12, 30, 56, 90 }

SEATWORK 2.2
A. Solve for the number pattern. Show answers only.

1. Given: f (x) =
for x = { 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 }
Note: Solve for f (1), f (3), f (5), …

2. Given: f (x) =
for x = { 4, 8, 12, 16 }
Note: Solve for f (4), f (8), …

MODULE 2

SEATWORK 2.2
B. Creating your own Pattern.

 Create a function that has a combination of at least three of the following Math
operations:
o Multiplication, addition, subtraction, fraction, square

 Use x = { 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 } to solve for f (0), f (2), f (4), …

GEOMETRIC PATTERNS
Repeating and growing patterns

Here we have a growing pattern that is outward because new elements are added, and
the general size of the figure is increasing.

Here we have also a growing pattern, but the growth is inward. The general size is
unchanging, but the new elements are added within.
