STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY

Performance Task #2: Analyzing Normal Distribution

Objective: Demonstrate proficiency in understanding and applying concepts related to normal distribution by
analyzing and solving real-world scenarios.

Instructions:
In this performance task, you will be presented with a series of scenarios involving normal distribution. Your task is to
analyze each scenario, sketch the appropriate normal distribution curve, shade the region representing the
probability or area under the curve as specified in the scenario, and provide a detailed explanation of your
calculations and reasoning.

Scenarios:

Scenario 1: Height of Students

The heights of students in a class are normally distributed with a mean of 65 inches and a standard deviation of 3
inches. What is the probability that a randomly selected student is shorter than 60 inches?

Scenario 2: Exam Scores

The scores on a standardized test follow a normal distribution with a mean of 75 and a standard deviation of 10.
What percentage of students score between 60 and 80 on the test?

Scenario 3: Manufacturing Defects

The number of defects in a batch of manufactured products follows a normal distribution with a mean of 20 defects
per batch and a standard deviation of 5 defects. What is the probability of selecting a batch with fewer than 15
defects?

Scenario 4: Daily Temperatures

Daily temperatures in a city follow a normal distribution with a mean of 70°F and a standard deviation of 5°F. What
percentage of days have temperatures above 80°F?

Scenario 5: IQ Scores
IQ scores in a population are normally distributed with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. What
percentage of the population has an IQ score between 85 and 115?

Submission Requirements:

1. For each scenario, sketch the normal distribution curve and shade the appropriate region to represent the
probability or area under the curve as specified in the scenario.
2. Show all necessary calculations, including z-scores and probability calculations.
3. Provide a detailed explanation of your reasoning and methodology for each scenario.
4. Write your answers on an A4 size bond paper with the following format at the top:
