Question 1
For the cantilever retaining wall as shown in Fig. 1, the wall dimensions are H
= 8 m, x1 = 0.4 m, x2 = 0.6 m, x3 = 1.5 m, x4 = 3.5 m, x5 = 0.96 m, D = 1.75
m, and   10 ; and the soil properties are  1  16.8kN / m 3 , 1'  32 ,

 2  17.6kN / m 3 , 2'  28 , and c 2'  30kN /m2 . Calculate the factors of safety with
respect to overturning, sliding, and bearing capacity. Consider the unit weight
of concrete as 23.5 kN/m3.

Question 2

A gravity retaining wall is shown in Figure 2. Calculate the factors of safety

with respect to overturning and sliding. We have wall dimensions H = 6 m,
x1 = 0.6 m, x2 = 0.2 m, x3 = 2 m, x4 = 0.5 m, x5 = 0.75 m, x6 = 0.8 m, and D =
1.5 m; and soil properties  1  16.5kN / m 3 , 1'  32 ,  2  18kN / m 3 , 2'  22 , and

c 2'  40kN /m2 .

Question 3

Repeat Question 1 with wall dimensions of H = 5.49 m, x1 = 0.46 m, x2 = 0.58

m, x3 = 0.92 m, x4 = 1.55 m, x5 = 0.61 m, D = 1.22 m, and   0 ; and soil
properties of  1  18.8kN / m 3 , 1'  36 ,  2  19.65kN / m 3 , 2'  15 , and

c 2'  44kN /m2 .
