Meaning and Definition of Research


Research can be defined as the systematic search of already existing concepts and sometimes coming up with
new concepts based on already existing ones.

According to Clifford Woody research comprises defining and redefining problems, formulating hypotheses or
suggested solutions; collecting, organizing, and evaluating data; making deductions and reaching conclusions;
and at last, carefully testing the conclusions to determine whether they fit the formulating hypothesis.

Research can also be defined as the search for knowledge through objective and systematic method of
finding solution to a problem is research. The systematic approach concerning generalisation and the
formulation of a theory is also research. As such the term ‘research’ refers to the systematic method
consisting of enunciating the problem, formulating a hypothesis, collecting the facts or data, analysing the
facts and reaching certain conclusions either in the form of solutions(s) towards the concerned problem or in
certain generalisations for some theoretical formulation.

Nature of Research
• Research must be objective in nature
• Research must have empirical data
• Research must be ethically and morally sound
• Research must be neutral, i.e., researcher bias must not affect the results
• Research must be replicable
• Research must be systematic
• Research has to be controlled, i.e., no intervening or moderating variables should be present
• Research must be valid and reliable
• Research should be consistent and stable
• Research should be testable

The first step towards research is identifying a problem area, which is later used to decide the area of interest
from which a topic is derived. The topic on which an individual’s research is based is usually chosen keeping
in mind the following:

1. An area of interest
2. A social problem plaguing one’s immediate society
3. To test a theory
4. Existing research: make sure that the topic chosen has enough existing research to gather
appropriate amount of data
5. Research focused on minority groups: research based on religion, caste, creed, sex, sexuality. Try and
pick an area of interest where minority groups have been neglected.
6. Do research where resources are readily available
Purpose of Research
The purpose of research is to discover answers to questions through the application of scientific procedures.
The main aim of research is to find out the truth which is hidden and which has not been discovered as yet.

1. Policy Making: via evidence-based research which would employ experimentation on a small sample
size which when met with favourable results would lead to its implementation on the larger
populace.

2. To understand the current scenario: to understand the rising and falling trends of existing social
problems. To determine the frequency with which something occurs or with which it is associated
with something else (studies with this object in view are known as diagnostic research studies)

3. To Explain: give an explanation as to why certain phenomenon happens in certain places. To portray
accurately the characteristics of a particular individual, situation or a group (studies with this object
in view are known as descriptive research studies)

4. Add to the Theoretical Framework: in order to add a new perspective to an already existing theory

5. To Compare: research is done to learn from various backgrounds and implement new strategies
where it is found to be lacking.

6. To Find Solution for existing problems: through research, the individual would gain a better
understanding of the existing problems which would help solve them

7. To Explore: exploratory research is done in order to understand concepts more clearly, understand
various phenomena and prove hypotheses. To gain familiarity with a phenomenon or to achieve new
insights into it (studies with this object in view are termed as exploratory or formulative research
studies)

8. Find a relationship between Cause and Effect: research is done to understand the causal link
between the problem and its cause, and whether if they are directly or indirectly related to one
another. To test a hypothesis of a causal relationship between variables (such studies are known as
hypothesis-testing research studies)

Scientific Attitudes
Scientific attitude can be defined as the mindset of thinking in a very scientific manner.

Components of Scientific Attitude in Research:

1. Curiosity: the ability to be inquisitive towards a concept in order to better understand it; the desire to
learn.
2. Objectivity: To have no biases, to understand and discern between hearsay and facts. To have an
attitude that is based on facts and not hearsay.
3. Open-mindedness: the ability to be receptive towards new ideas and scientific knowledge
4. Perseverance: the ability to keep up the research and not give up despite the results achieved.
5. Humility: to have enough confidence to believe in your concept but at the same time not to look
down on others. To be open to criticisms and be able to receive others opinions.
6. Ability to accept failure: when faced with failures, such not able to get data, do not be discouraged
because such kind of hindrances are a part of the research process.
7. Scepticism: having a sceptic view of your concept is important because it allows to show you the
flaws in your theory.
8. Intellectual Honesty: plagiarism and data manipulation is almost criminal in the field of research as
putting out false data is an injustice towards the institutions, organisations and persons reading it.
9. Rationality: the belief that things happen because of a reason and the trajectory your research is
heading towards is due to a reason.
10. Careful Judgement: the ability to not jump to conclusions or make any judgements without using
proper research processes.

Approaches to Research: Inductive and Deductive Reasoning


Inductive Reasoning

• Based on a specific to general gradient


• Mostly done in exploratory research as it concentrates on reaching to a theory after gathering data
• Includes pattern recognition
• Down to Top approach
• Process of Inductive Research:
1. Gather data: focus on each unit, each sample. Be very specific.
2. Look for patterns in the gathered data
3. Based on the pattern recognised, devise a theory which would fall under the general level of
focus.

Deductive Reasoning

• Most widely used method


• Based on already existing research
• Focuses on testing the reliability and validity of a theory
• Top to Down Approach
• General to specific
• Example, System’s Theory
• Process of Deductive Reasoning:
1. Select a theory/hypothesis: start with a general level of focus, study an existing theory.
2. Analyse your data derived: to see if data gathered proves or disproves the existing theory
selected

Complimentary Approach: a mixture of inductive and deductive research. For example, Sherman and Burke,
research on IPV using deterrence theory and labelling theory. The sample population was divided into two
groups, employed and married, and unemployed and married. In the former group, deterrence theory was
more applicable, whereas in the latter group labelling theory was more applicable according to the data
gathered.

In the end it was deduced that Control Theory was more applicable than the combination of Labelling Theory
and Deterrence Theory.
Types of Research Studies
1. Experimental Research: the type of research in which the researcher can manipulate the variables as
it is a part of the research procedure.

2. Non-experimental Research: the researcher has no control over the manipulation of dependent and
independent variables as it would be considered to be morally and ethically wrong because it is not a
part of the research process.

3. Exploratory Research:

Usually happens when the researcher concerned is entering a new field and trying to solve the
existing problems in the said field. Generally used for an in-depth study. It is usually not structured
and starts with an open-ended. It is a qualitative form of research and thus is very time consuming
and requires a lot of patience. Review of literature is very import for this type of research method as
the researcher doesn’t completely depend on the participant’s personal account for data collection,
thus preparation is important.

Advantages of Exploratory research:

a. Flexibility: the researcher has the ability to change his/her method of data collection based
on the type of population they are taking, for example, groups, individuals, etc.
b. It is budget-friendly.
c. Since it is the foundation research when concerned with any topic, the research has the
liberty to be creative and not be curbed by parameters of pre-existing research.

Disadvantages of Exploratory Research:

a. It is very time consuming and thus cannot be used for short research projects.
b. The researcher must have people skills as their data collection depends on it
c. Sometimes qualitative research data becomes very subjective

Exploratory research acts like a seed in the germination of a new concept and it is through exploratory
research that we can come up with new theories.

4. Descriptive Research:

Descriptive research includes surveys and fact-finding enquiries of different kinds. The major purpose
of descriptive research is description of the state of affairs as it exists at present. The main
characteristic of this method is that the researcher has no control over the variables; he can only
report what has happened or what is happening. This type of research method is known as “Ex post
facto”.
This study includes the description of characteristics of an individual, group, situation, phenomenon
or events. It is focused on what, when, where, and how. The only thing that descriptive research
cannot answer is why. This method is generally used after exploratory research to understand the
characteristics, patterns and opinions of people.

This research concept is usually used to build on new concepts by finding out data corroborating with
the newly formed theory. It focuses on characteristics, patterns, opinions, attitudes and trends, and
their comparisons. After the comparisons are made, the existing theory will either be validated or
rejected. There exist two types of descriptive research: cross-sectional and longitudinal.

Advantages of Descriptive Research:

a) Provides the ability to generalise

c) Is essential in decision-making

Disadvantages of Descriptive Research:

a) Limited causal conclusions: Descriptive research is primarily focused on describing a particular


phenomenon and does not seek to establish causality between variables. This means that it may
be difficult to draw strong causal conclusions based on descriptive research alone.
b) Lack of control: Descriptive research often relies on observational methods, which means that
researchers have limited control over the variables they are studying. This can make it difficult to
determine whether the results are due to the variables being studied or other confounding
factors.
c) Limited generalizability: Descriptive research is often focused on a specific population or sample,
which can make it difficult to generalize the findings to other populations or contexts.
d) Potential for bias: Descriptive research relies heavily on the accuracy and honesty of the
participants being studied, which can be a potential source of bias. Participants may not always
accurately report their thoughts, feelings, or behaviours, which can affect the validity of the
results.
e) Limited depth: Descriptive research is often used to gather broad information about a
phenomenon, which means that it may not provide a deep understanding of the underlying
mechanisms or processes that drive the phenomenon.

5. Analytical Research: The most important component of analytical research is observation. Th


researcher needs to have prior knowledge or expertise regarding the subject. Researcher needs to
pay great attention to details. Critical Thinking is a very important aspect in analytical research,
because without this ability, analysis is not possible. Critical thinking, in context to analytical
research, is often used to determine the dependent and independent variables.

Analytical research design is a type of research design used to investigate the relationships between
different variables. Analytical research aims to test a hypothesis or a theory by analyzing and
interpreting data. This research design typically involves collecting and analyzing quantitative data
using statistical methods.

Analytical research is often used in social sciences, business, economics, and other fields where
quantitative data analysis is important. The design is characterized by its focus on empirical data,
objective observation, and systematic investigation. The process usually involves the following steps:

• Formulating a research question: The first step in analytical research is to identify a research
question that can be tested through data analysis.
• Developing a hypothesis: A hypothesis is developed based on the research question, which is
a tentative explanation for the phenomenon under investigation.
• Collecting data: Data is collected through various means such as surveys, experiments,
observations, or existing datasets.
• Analyzing data: Statistical analysis is conducted to test the hypothesis and identify patterns
and relationships in the data.
• Interpreting results: The results are interpreted in light of the hypothesis and research
question, and conclusions are drawn.
• Communicating findings: The findings are communicated through research reports,
publications, presentations, and other means.

Overall, analytical research design is a powerful tool for investigating the relationships between
variables, testing hypotheses, and contributing to our understanding of the world around us.

6. Doctrinal Research: Doctrinal research design is a type of research design that focuses on analyzing
legal texts, such as statutes, case law, and legal commentary. The purpose of doctrinal research is to
identify and interpret legal principles and doctrines, as well as to evaluate their application in
different contexts.

Doctrinal research design is commonly used in legal studies, where researchers may analyze legal
sources to identify the development of legal doctrines and principles over time, or to identify
inconsistencies or gaps in legal frameworks. The process typically involves the following steps:

• Identifying the research question: The researcher identifies the legal issue or question they
wish to analyze.
• Identifying legal sources: The researcher identifies the legal sources that are relevant to the
research question, such as statutes, case law, and legal commentary.
• Analyzing legal sources: The researcher analyzes the legal sources to identify legal principles
and doctrines, as well as to evaluate their application in different contexts.
• Synthesizing findings: The researcher synthesizes their findings to identify overarching

Criminological Research: Meaning Objectives and Scope

intend to research. The more specific and clearer you are the better, as everything that follows in the
research process – study design, measurement procedures, sampling strategy, frame of analysis and the style
of writing of your dissertation or report – is greatly influenced by the way in which you formulate your
research problem.

collecting new data, primary research provides a more detailed and accurate understanding of the research
problem.

It is also known as field research, as it involves collecting data from the field or real-world settings.

Here are some common methods of primary research:

1. Surveys: Surveys are a popular method of primary research as they allow researchers to collect
data from a large number of people in a relatively short period. Surveys can be conducted through
various modes, such as online, phone, or mail, and can be either self-administered or administered
by an interviewer. Surveys typically use closed-ended questions, such as multiple-choice or Likert

collect qualitative data.

involve randomized control trials or quasi-experimental designs. Experiments allow researchers to
establish causal relationships between variables and can provide valuable data for testing
hypotheses.

5. Focus Groups: Focus groups involve the use of small groups of individuals to explore attitudes,
beliefs, and opinions about a particular topic or issue. Focus groups typically involve a moderator
who guides the discussion and can be used to collect qualitative data.

The disadvantages of primary research include:

• In order to be done well, primary research can be very expensive and time consuming. If you are
constrained in terms of time or funding, it can be very difficult to conduct your own high-quality
primary research.
• Primary research is often insufficient as a standalone research method, requiring secondary research
to bolster it.
• Primary research can be prone to various types of research bias. Bias can manifest on the part of the
researcher as observer bias, Pygmalion effect, or demand characteristics. It can occur on the part of
participants as a Hawthorne effect or social desirability bias.

Secondary Research
Secondary research refers to the process of gathering information that has already been collected, analysed,
and published by others. It involves reviewing existing sources of information such as books, academic
journals, reports, and online databases, among others, to gain insights and knowledge on a particular topic.

Secondary research is an important aspect of the research process, as it can help to inform the development
of research questions and hypotheses, as well as guide the selection of research methods and data collection
techniques. By reviewing existing literature, reports, and other sources of information, researchers can gain a
better understanding of the current state of knowledge on a given topic, identify gaps in the existing
research, and determine areas where further investigation is needed.

Secondary research can be qualitative or quantitative in nature. It often uses data gathered from published
peer-reviewed papers, meta-analyses, or government or private sector databases and datasets.

Secondary research can take many forms, but the most common types are:

• Statistical analysis: There is ample data available online from a variety of sources, often in the form of
datasets. These datasets are often open-source or downloadable at a low cost, and are ideal for
conducting statistical analyses such as hypothesis testing or regression analysis.
• Literature reviews: A literature review is a survey of pre-existing scholarly sources on your topic. It
provides an overview of current knowledge, allowing you to identify relevant themes, debates, and
gaps in the research you analyze. You can later apply these to your own work, or use them as a
jumping-off point to conduct primary research of your own.
• Case studies: A case study is a detailed study of a specific subject. It is usually qualitative in nature
and can focus on a person, group, place, event, organization, or phenomenon. A case study is a great
way to utilize existing research to gain concrete, contextual, and in-depth knowledge about your real-
world subject.
• Content analysis: Content analysis is a research method that studies patterns in recorded
communication by utilizing existing texts. It can be either quantitative or qualitative in nature,

Methods of Data Collection:

1. Pilot Study: A pilot study, also known as a feasibility study, is a small-scale preliminary study conducted
before the main research to check the feasibility or improve the research design. Pilot studies can be very
important before conducting a full-scale research project, helping design the research methods and
protocol. Pilot studies are a fundamental stage of the research process. They can help identify design
issues and evaluate a study’s feasibility, practicality, resources, time, and cost before the main research is
conducted. It involves selecting a few people and trying out the study on them. It is possible to save time
and, in some cases, money by identifying any flaws in the procedures designed by the researcher. A pilot
study can help the researcher spot any ambiguities (i.e., unusual things), confusion in the information
given to participants, or problems with the task devised.

2. Observation: Observation is way of gathering data by watching behavior, events, or noting physical
characteristics in their natural setting. Observations can be overt (everyone knows they are being
observed) or covert (no one knows they are being observed and the observer is concealed). Observations
can also be either direct or indirect. Direct observation is when you watch interactions, processes, or
behaviours as they occur. Indirect observations are when you watch the results of interactions,
processes, or behaviours.

3. Questionnaires: A questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of a series of questions and other


prompts for the purpose of gathering information from respondents. Although they are often designed
for statistical analysis of the responses, this is not always the case. Questionnaires have advantages over
some other types of surveys in that they are cheap, do not require as much effort from the questioner as
verbal or telephone surveys, and often have standardized answers that make it simple to compile data.
As a type of survey, questionnaires also have many of the same problems relating to question
construction and wording that exist in other types of opinion polls.

4. Interview: Interviewing involves asking questions and getting answers from participants in a study.
Interviewing has a variety of forms including: individual, face-to-face interviews and face-to-face group
interviewing. The asking and answering of questions can be mediated by the telephone or other
electronic devices (e.g. computers). Interviews can be –

• Structured: The interviewer asks each respondent the same series of questions. The questions are
created prior to the interview, and often have a limited set of response categories. There is very little
room for variation.
• Semi-structure: The interviewer and respondents engage in a formal interview. The interviewer
develops and uses an ‘interview guide’. This is a list of questions and topics that need to be covered
during the conversation, usually in a particular order. The interviewer follows the guide, but is able to
follow topical trajectories in the conversation that may stray from the guide when s/he feels this is
appropriate.
• Unstructured: The interviewer and respondents engage in a formal interview in that they have a
scheduled time to sit and speak with each other and both parties recognize this to be an interview.
The interviewer has a clear plan in mind regarding the focus and goal of the interview. This guides
the discussion. There is not a structured interview guide. Instead, the interviewer builds rapport with
respondents, getting respondents to open-up and express themselves in their own way.
5. Case Study: Case studies are in-depth investigations of a single person, group, event or community.
Typically, data are gathered from a variety of sources and by using several different methods (e.g.
observations & interviews). The case study method often involves simply observing what happens to,
or reconstructing ‘the case history’ of a single participant or group of individuals (such as a school
class or a specific social group), i.e. the idiographic approach. Case studies allow a researcher to
investigate a topic in far more detail than might be possible if they were trying to deal with a large
number of research participants (nomothetic approach) with the aim of ‘averaging’.

Unobtrusive methods of data collection


Trochim (2006) wrote:

Unobtrusive measures are measures that don't require the researcher to intrude in the research context.
Direct and participant observation require that the researcher be physically present. This can lead the
respondents to alter their behavior in order to look good in the eyes of the researcher. A questionnaire is an
interruption in the natural stream of behavior. Respondents can get tired of filling out a survey or resentful of
the questions asked.

Unobtrusive measurement presumably reduces the biases that result from the intrusion of the researcher or
measurement instrument. However, unobtrusive measures reduce the degree the researcher has control
over the type of data collected. For some constructs there may simply not be any available unobtrusive
measures.

Secondary data collection:

Secondary data are basically second-hand pieces of information. These are not gathered from the source as
the primary data. To put it in other words, the secondary data are those that are already collected. So, these
are comparatively less reliable than the primary data.

These are usually used when the time for the enquiry is compact and the exactness of the enquiry can be
settled to an extent. However, the secondary data can be gathered from different sources which can be
categorised into two categories. These are as follows:

1. Published sources
2. Unpublished sources

a) Published sources
• Secondary data is usually gathered from the published (printed) sources. A few major sources of
published information are as follows:
• Published articles of local bodies, and central and state governments
• Statistical synopses, census records, and other reports issued by the different departments of the
government
• Official statements and publications of the foreign governments
• Publications and reports of chambers of commerce, financial institutions, trade associations, etc.
• Magazines, journals, and periodicals
• Publications of government organisations like the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), National
Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO)
• Reports presented by research scholars, bureaus, economists, etc.

b) Unpublished sources

Statistical data can be obtained from several unpublished references. Some of the major unpublished sources
from which secondary data can be gathered are as follows:

• The research works conducted by teachers, professors, and professionals


• The records that are maintained by private and business enterprises
• Statistics maintained by different departments and agencies of the central and the state government,
undertakings, corporations, etc.

Use of Official statistics


Statistical Survey

A statistical Survey is normally conducted using a sample. It is also called Sample Survey. It is the method of
collecting sample data and analyzing it using statistical methods. This is done to make estimations about
population characteristics. The advantage is that it gives you full control over the data. Y

ou can ask questions suited to the study you are carrying out. But, the disadvantage is that there is a chance
of sample error creeping up. This is because a sample is chosen and the entire population is not studied.
Leaving out some units of the population while choosing the sample causes this error to arise.

Census

Opposite to a sample survey, a census is based on all items of the population and then data are analyzed.
Data collection happens for a specific reference period. For example, the Census of India is conducted every
10 years. Other censuses are conducted roughly every 5-10 years. Data is collected using questionnaires that
may be mailed to the respondents.

Responses can also be collected over other modes of communication like the telephone. An advantage is that
even the most remote of the units of the population get included in the census method. The major
disadvantage lies in the high cost of data collection and that it is a time-consuming process.

Register

Registers are basically storehouses of statistical information from which data can be collected and analysis
can be made. Registers tend to be detailed and extensive. It is beneficial to use data from here as it is
reliable. Two or more registers can be linked together based on common information for even more relevant
data collection.

From agriculture to business, all industries maintain registers for record-keeping. Some administrative
registers also serve the purpose of acting as a repository of data for other statistical bodies in a country.

Victimization surveys:
Victimization surveys are a widely used method of data collection in criminology and victimology research.
These surveys are designed to gather information about individuals' experiences of crime and victimization,
focusing on capturing the prevalence, nature, and impact of criminal victimization.

Quantitative approaches address the ‘what’ of the program. They use a systematic standardized approach
and employ methods such as surveys and ask questions. Quantitative approaches have the advantage that
they are cheaper to implement, are standardized so comparisons can be easily made and the size of the
effect can usually be measured. Quantitative approaches however are limited in their capacity for the
investigation and explanation of similarities and unexpected differences.

1. Continuous Data: Continuous data is numeric data that can take any value within a certain range. It
can be measured and divided into smaller units. Examples include height, weight, temperature, and
time.
2. Discrete Data: Discrete data is also numeric but can only take certain specific values. It consists of

The researcher-participant relationship is unique among relationships in which confidentiality may be


considered integral to the functioning of the relationship. The primary purpose of research ethics is to ensure
research participants are not harmed by their involvement in research.

When research can be conducted in a way that maintains research participant anonymity, the threat of
violating confidentiality because of some unwanted third-party intrusion is minimal. Clearly, whenever data
can be gathered anonymously, they should be.
